Bolton parkrun - Event #63 - 19th May 2012 |

Hear ye, hear ye...much a-hoohaa about running
I think it is fair to say, Manchester city centre was taken over by runners this weekend, as something like forty thousand folk pulled on their Lycra, rubbed on some Deep Heat/Vaseline/Goose fat and pounded the streets for the Great Manchester Run.
We love to see events like this, and the Greater Manchester Marathon a few weeks ago, as it really helps to give focus to people’s running diaries, provides a fun, inspiring and vibrant atmosphere to get involved and showcase the benefits of participation. All of which ultimately feeds back into running on an even more local level, helping to boost our parkrun numbers, and providing new intake for the running clubs of the Bolton area. It was awesome to see so many familiar faces, therefore, as myself, Row and Ali all turned out for the run on Sunday. Well done to all of you who took part, or supported friends, families and loved ones, I had the pleasure of being at London Marathon a few weeks ago, and I definitely think Manchester has an event to rival ‘the big one’! I am also glad that all the wood-touching (oi...no!) I did after last week's report paid off and the weather stayed nice....
Volunteer-o-rama
One of the happy knock-on effects of the GMR this weekend, was the fact that many of you guys preferred to save your legs and instead help out on the volunteering side of things on Saturday. I don't think we have ever had such an embarrassment of volunteering riches, and we calculated that we had a marshal at roughly 150m intervals! We hope it helped to spur you runners on, thank you to all those selfless luminous-vested marshals, we hope you enjoyed being part of a record-breaking volunteer turnout.
parkrun Ink
For those of you who had your beady ears on during the run brief, you will have heard the shout out to James Kemp and his co-Event Director Catherine Tombs, along with their respective children Jack, Imogen and Felix, who joined us from the newly-formed Marple parkrun, which kicks off next weekend and is another welcome addition to the North-West family. I had a brief catch-up with James post-run and he showed me his parkrun tattoo – which has featured on ‘the parkrun Show’ podcast and on the parkrun Facebook page recently, getting plenty of comments from the parkrun community. I was mighty impressed with James’ devotion to the parkrun cause (as if his 127 previous runs weren’t proof enough!) and we hope things go well for them over at Marple next weekend.
KM Signs
So...after all of the fanfare and hoohaa (never written that word, don’t know if I spelled it right? Or if it is even a word? Answers/suggestions on a postcard, please...) of the new KM signs, we finally got them (without Alistair attached to any) dotted out around the course this weekend. We’d love some feedback – early indications suggest they help and will be a good addition to the Bolton parkrun stable of run-day equipment (alongside the Gazebo with the torn roof and the ‘Silly Stool’), so we value any further comments you may have.
Having the cake, and then eating it (whether we were meant to or not)
Now, we had a slight moment on Saturday morning, just after setting you all off for your run, when Marisa, who is the lovely lady who scans your barcodes, if you weren’t already aware, asked me who had brought the cakes, and whether they were meant for us. Under the sheer weight of volunteer numbers, I hadn’t seen who had brought the cake, or indeed whether it was actually intended for parkrun consumption (visions of Tom & Jerry-esque ‘leaving-the-pie-on-the-windowsill-to-cool-and-it-getting-stolen’ come to mind) but comments ranged from ‘amazeballs’, to ‘lush’, to ‘wow’. So thank you, and please do feel free to bring some more, whoever our mystery baker was!
More on the GMR
Rarely have I ever seen so many Facebook ‘Likes’ in response to a status or comment than I did in the aftermath of the GMR on Sunday. We asked for you guys to let us know how you got on, and we were massively impressed by the times you all put in. Even more heartening, though, was the support and reactions to each others’ times, which further cements our belief in the community aspects of our parkrun. Everyone loves to see each other do well, and while that is seen by us week-in-week-out at Bolton, when it is transferred to a massive scale like the GMR, it demonstrates just what a great social and community attitude we have fostered and developed at Leverhulme Park, and which clearly extends beyond a Saturday morning parkrun.
Results
So, back to Saturday’s proceedings at Bolton parkrun, and it was Steve Nolan of Burnden Road Runners who recorded first spot in 17.33s for his fourth win at Bolton in 7 goes, while Jacob Kearney of Bolton United Harriers & AC was next home in 18.03s. It was a simply stunning run of 18.45s by our own Alistair McArthur that brought him home in third spot, simultaneously making him the fastest Bolton parkrun Event Director over 5km into the bargain.
For the ladies, Pauline Linton was first in 21.43s, her 9th win in just 16 appearances, while Olivia Kearney (Bolton United Harriers & AC) once more ran brilliantly for second in 22.39s. Linda Clarkson (Darwen Dashers RC) was third in 23.02s
In the points competition, currently the standings are thus:
Chaps
· Rob Short (Burnden Road Runners) 1337 pts
· Steve McVey (Unattached) 1303 pts
· Derek Lord (Littlewoods Leggers) 1122 pts
Chappesses
· Olivia Kearney (Bolton United Harriers & AC) 1260 pts
· Emma Holden (Burnden Road Runners) 1239 pts
· Judith Bonnar (Unattached) 1019 pts
The following trio recorded the best age-graded score for event 63:
Steve Nolan (VM50-54) was graded 85.38 % for the time 17:33 (first overall).
Steve McVey (VM60-64) was graded 79.50 % for the time 20:10 (9th overall).
Eileen Royle (VW60-64) was graded 79.37 % for the time 25:32 (55th overall).
This week at Bolton parkrun there were:
· 156 runners
· 27 were first timers
· 36 recorded new Personal Bests
· Representatives of 15 different athletics clubs took part.
Special Plaudits
· A big well done to Chloe and Rachael Shaw, both of whom were first time parkrunners and who made a 300-mile round trip from the North East to run at Bolton on Saturday morning ahead of the GMR on Sunday. Hope you both enjoyed your run!
· Congratulations to Phil Holden for his 50th parkrun, a stunning 49 of which have been with us at Bolton Well done Phil, we’ll have your T-shirt very soon.
· Well done to Mo Osman Jama for his unwavering commitment; after arriving a little after the start, Mo nevertheless tore around the track with that trademark smile on his face before catching the rest of the field. Good running, Mo!
· A nod to Paul Johnson this weekend who, upon completing his GMR on Sunday, realised he had managed to mix up his and his wife Frances’ timing chips, after she was unable to run due to injury. The results consequently, and erroneously, show Frances trimmed around 12 minutes from her PB, putting her in the top 400 ladies! Paul has broached the matter with the organisers and hopefully has his correct time recorded now!
The Bolton parkrun ‘Hall of Fame’ this week consists of the following PBers:
Alistair McArthur, Simon Dally, Rob Short, Martin Jones, Iain Pearson, Olivia Kearney, Charles Kattakayam, Kaylie Panaro, Mumtaz Patel, Elijah Cooke, Paul Blakemore, Bill Kelly, David Schofield, Elizabeth Mole, Emma Foster, Amy Foster, Maggie Howarth, Chloe Weaver, Nigel Coop, Liz Diggle, Alison Fishwick, Lucy Everson, Christine Pendlebury, Jenna Wood, Daniel Fishwick, Thomas Warner, Sheila Christie, Mel Gill, Angela Smith, John Hurley, Rachel Hurst, Sue Blackman, Jane Greaves, Chris Hadfield, Megan Pilkington and Domynique Greenhalgh.
I am sure there is a quick way of finding out for sure (such is the nature of modern-fangled technology), but we think Saturday must be the best turnout we have had at Bolton since our inception last February, in terms of volunteers and runners in total. Indeed, if it wasn’t for last week’s 162, this week would’ve actually been a new high in terms of runners alone, so it is great to see we are consistently pushing those numbers up – this old parkrun thing is catching on!
We hope we can continue to ride a wave of enthusiasm and convince plenty of newbies to join us on a Saturday morning, we rely on you guys as our unofficial town-criers (you don’t HAVE to wear a three-pointed hat, ring a bell or shout, but it might help...just saying, if you want to do it properly), spreading the gospel in an old-school word-of-mouth format. As always, you can direct questions, comments or queries to us at boltonoffice@parkrun.com, or via our various social media means, details below.
It’ll be Row in charge next weekend as I am away, re-visiting my old stomping ground at Durham parkrun, to see how they are fairing since I left them to their own devices after setting up the run back in August. Don’t worry, I’ll pass on your regards.
Keep it real, homies

Sunny with a chance of PBs...
I said a while back that I was going to try and avoid mentioning the weather in these reports. I think I failed, on that front, but when we are graced with conditions like Saturday, I think it warrants a little reference, doesn’t it?
I received a pre-run text message from Ali, who was stood at the Arrivals gate at Manchester airport awaiting the appearance of his sister, at 7.51am, saying ‘if this isn’t record-attendance-inducing weather, nothing is.!’ By the time he had popped a luminous bib on (which I think he had stashed, suspiciously, in his car) and scampered across to join us at Leverhulme Park at 9.03am, we had counted somewhere in the region of 165 runners starting event 62. Which made us all very smug. Apart from Ali’s sister, Jen, whose jetlag somehow detracted from the enjoyment of the occasion for her.
In the end, we ushered in 162 of you to break that record attendance by a clear seven runners, which made us all very happy – after several bumper attendances in recent weeks, it was great to finally bust that nut.
Club T-shirts
Following on from last week’s T-shirt presentations, we had the pleasure of handing out two more this week, and it was ‘one of each’, as Molly Philbin took delivery of her ‘10’ Club tee, and Paul Johnson wasted absolutely no time in stripping off to wear his new ‘50’ tee with pride for the event. It was great to see both Cameron and Ciaran Marland proudly running in their new ‘10’ tops as well; we are steadily seeing more and more Club T-shirts at Bolton, with a whole load more on the way, by the looks of our results!
KM Markers
As you may have heard on the grapevine (or possibly seen via Facebook) we took delivery of four big kilometre marker signs in the last week, which we are looking forward to dotting about the course (Row has actually worked out exact placements, we’re not just whacking them any old place). We also took delivery, on Saturday morning, of four sturdy stakes, courtesy of the very kind Dave Tipping, to allow us to knock together a proper arrangement, hopefully by next Saturday. Although that said, the thought of Alistair, a nail gun and a home DIY attempt makes me think my esteemed RD-colleague may actually end up personally attached to one sign, and forced to act as a human stake forever more. I really hope not.
Pimp Yo’ Barcode
For those of you who caught the midweek update, you may have spotted a few snazzy ideas for barcodes, modelled by the Harding-Jeans family, as Bolton parkrun newcomers Shamine Harding (who set her second successive PB, and more importantly is enjoying her running after overcoming her emotions in event #60), her partner Chris Jeans, and their daughter Charlotte Harding-Jeans (both of whom were running for the first time) hung their laminated and blinged-out barcodes on lanyards. Can you beat the Harding-Jeans’ effort? Show us!
Facebook photos
We are really lucky at Bolton parkrun to have some very talented and dedicated volunteers who are happy to take snaps of you all as you run, helping us to document our events in glorious technicolour. We are sure you’ll agree, it is great to see the photos post run. However, mindful of that fact that not everyone will want their picture including, please do let us know if you’d rather your photo, or those of your family, not appear and we’ll take those pics offline.
Let’s hear it for the girls!
It was great to see such a brilliant turnout from the ladies this weekend – a cursory look back through the recent results shows that we typically have a field that is weighted towards the chaps, but it was almost a 50/50 split this week, with 79 runners of the fairer sex, compared to 83 blokes. There’s no reason why the boys should have the bigger numbers, so why not bring your friends next week, too, ladies?
Results
It won’t have escaped your notice this week that there was something of a delay in the results coming out, and we thank you for your patience on these rare occasions. We always try to keep you abreast of any issues, and usually all the Bolton results are sent off to HQ before 11am, so we are at the mercy of their systems as they put through results from over a hundred events nationwide. Nevertheless, in these instances, we do appreciate your understanding – it is a completely free event and we endeavour to get the results to your inboxes and mobiles usually much quicker than most paid-for races. It just goes to show the speed with which we usually get things done!
On with the final placings at event soixante-deux, and it was a rapid run by Liam Thompson (Leigh Harriers & AC) that brought him home first in 16.49s, in his first run at Bolton, with Mark Williams (Radcliffe AC) in second with a time of 18.52s (a new PB) and Simon Marland (Burnden Road Runners) third in 19.20s.
For the girls, Linda Leyland took first spot in 22.27s, a PB and her second win in 12 runs, Olivia Kearney continued her fine run of, well, runs with second spot in 22.57s, while Anna Smith was third in 23.18s.
On the age-graded front, perennial top-tenner Steve McVey recorded the best score on the day with 81.73% (19.37s), with Simon Marland’s 19.20s giving him the second best score of 78.19%. David Kirk was third best, marginally behind Simon, with 78.15% (20.31s)
In the annual points competition the standings are as follows:
Gentlemen:
1. Rob Short (Burnden Road Runners) 1242 pts.
2. Steve McVey (Unattached) 1211 pts.
3. Derek Lord (Littlewoods Leggers) 1122 pts.
Ladies:
1. Olivia Kearney (Bolton United Harriers & AC) 1161 pts.
2. Emma Holden (Burnden Road Runners) 1155 pts.
3. Christine Pendlebury (Burnden Road Runners) 952 pts.
This week at Bolton parkrun:
· 162 runners
· 21 first timers
· 46 recorded new Personal Bests
· Representatives of 13 different athletics clubs took part.
Special plaudits
· Congratulations to Chris Hadfield for recording a third successive PB on Saturday – Chris is new to parkrun and has grown to love it, losing weight, getting fitter and dropping over 12 minutes since his first run
· It was a familiar sense of celebration for Rachel Wright at the finish line on Saturday as she recorded an incredible eighth consecutive PB! Whatever is in your drinks bottle, can you share it around please, Rachel?!
· Thanks to Howard Sparke who again ran a terrific pacing effort at 25 minutes to help some of our other runners around. Thanks Howard! The Lycra-clad Steve Thomasson® will be pacing next week, please let us know if you want a PB, Steve and his amazing stretchy shorts will be running anything of 23 minutes or above, depending on requests.
· It’ll be a big week for regular runner Gemma Masingiri, as she will celebrate her birthday and the move into a new age-grade category (I was brought up never to ask a lady her age, so we’ll leave it as vague as that...), before tackling the Great Manchester Run on Sunday. Good luck Gemma, on all counts!
· Congratulations to Phil Holden for notching up a PB – Phil’s next celebration will be a well-earned entry to the ‘50’ Club next weekend. It was PB-time for Brian Tull, also, his first since January.
· Well done to Ste Yates for plucking the number 162 from thin air and correctly guessing the number of runners we’d have this week. It was a triple Runner Bean Rollover, so well done for snaffling the prize, Ste!
In this week’s PB Hall of Fame are:
Mark Williams, Steve Riddle, Peter Kearney, The Lycra-clad Steve Thomasson®, Andrew Fahy, Russell Brooks, Matthew Finch, Linda Leyland, Gareth Taylor, Anna Smith, Phil Holden, Rick Swift, Danny Mole, Lorraine Halwood, David Brooks, Gary Fitton, Carolyn Wilby, John Grimshaw, Brian Tull, David Tipping, Helen Critchley, Ella Vicari, Kieran Weaver, Bill Hargreaves, Rachel Wright, Paul Blakemore, Chloe Ainsworth, Laura Hynes, Maggie Howarth, Rob Went, Jason Richmond, Alison Fishwick, Sally Ormiston, Peter Mason, Angela Smith, Ciaran Marland, Jane Bunn, Debbie Fitton, Beki Gerrard, Gary Greally, Philipa Johnson-Worsley, Hayley Edge, Zac Morgan, Helen Hayhurst, Christopher Hadfield, Shamine Harding and Sean Christie.
This week’s Bolton parkrun was brought to you by the following band of brilliant volunteers:
Alan Tatterton, Alistair McArthur, Clair Marland, Dave Hitchen, David Ardill, Dave Huddleston, Garrie Prosser, Jenna Wood, Lewis Blower, Luigi Cafolla, Malcolm Pittock, Maria Parkinson, Marisa Frot, Paul Prosser, Rob Short, Rowan Ardill, Shirley Tull and Ste Knowles.
We expect there may be a good number of you running at the Great Manchester Run next weekend, and as such it may be your weekly 5km parkrun that is sacrificed. Fear not, you can still get involved, we have an abundance of volunteer roles for you to do, please drop us a line if you want to marshal or help out in any way.
Good luck if you are running the 10k, it sounds like it’s going to be an absolute ripper of an event. I just hope it doesn’t rain like it did for the Marathon two weeks ago. Touch wood.
It’s been a pleasure writing for you again, hopefully I’ll see many of your bright, smiley faces again at 9am on Saturday.
Have a good week, parkrunners.

Mid-weel update: 10/05/2012 |

Mid-week update - 10th May 2012
Hello! A few lovely jubbly mid-week updates for you all.
KM-Markers are HERE.. (they just won't be at this weekend's event)
We finally took receipt of our awesome KM markers this week. They'll be making their way onto the course in a few week's time. In no time at all you'll be throwing those expensive time pieces in the bin and relying on good old eyesight to see how far round you are!
parkrunning isn't everything...
So it turns out many of you have lives outside of parkrun? Whilst we may not be familiar with this concept, Dave, Row and I are mighty impressed to find out about the shenanigans you lot get up to outside of Saturday mornings! This week's suspects are:
- Andrew “saviour with a bike who puts out all the signs before the run” Patterson completed the Horwich Triathlon last weekend in a time of 2 hours and 50 minutes! I'm going to put this down to the volunteering at Bolton that Andy did the Saturday before the tri, which was clearly so inspirational it spurred him on.... obvs... (we're always on the look out for more volunteers, please email boltonoffice@parkrun.com if you can help!)
- Some of you will recognise Neil Bonnar's name, as head of the sports pages of our beloved Bolton News (I say beloved, this week the paper devoted some space to reporting about somebody being convicted of stealing biscuits...). When not running round Bolton parkrun with his wife, Judith, Neil has been penning his first ever novel! More details over at http://neilbonnarbooks.com/
- New to Bolton parkrun, Shamine Harding, got in touch with us this week to show what we think may just be the best parkrun barcodes ever. Fact! Have a click on the thumbnail a'top this news update, or check it out on Facebook and show it some love! If you think you could go one better (LEDs, speakers, gold chains) please get in touch, and let battle of the “pimp yo' barcode” begin!
- As posted on our Facebook recently, Maria Parkinson recently took part in the Bonn marathon, earning herself an international cap for Burnden Roadrunners.
If there is anything interesting you've done outside of parkrun, or have an upcoming event you'd like to tell people about (birthday, dog's birthday etc) then let us know – boltonoffice@parkrun.com.
Barcodes barcodes barcodes
What Shamine has also done is provide a beautiful link into our favourite nag! BARCODES PEOPLE! As registrations as our event grow all the time, it takes us too long to key in runner names manually into the system. We are a barcode only event, so if you're joining us for the first time or closing in on your 50th run, please remember you barcodes or you will not get a recorded time at the run. Sad face!
We look forward to seeing you all this weekend. If you have any questions or comments, please fire them over to boltonoffice@parkrun.com!

"You're too hot!"
When Rowan and I were youngsters, playing football for hours on end in the back garden, trampling flowers, breaking windows - it only happened once, in fairness - and generally getting muddy and ‘too hot’ (our mum’s actual reprimand on several occasions to a sweaty-faced Row) we never liked to give in to the weather when it started raining, such was our love of ‘playing out’. “If we just keep playing, and don’t give in, the rain will give up and go away” I used to tell him and, often, I was right. The rain would stop and I would continue to smash spectacular shots and deft chips past him for another two hours (this is my run report, and if I say that’s how it happened, then that’s how it happened). Anyway, the point I am labouring to, is that I see similarities at parkrun. The persistence and determination of our runners, volunteers and marshals, to take part – and enjoy – the 5k run every Saturday morning, even when there is wind, rain and mud, takes me right back to the Ardill family garden, circa 1996. Saturday was one of those times when we were rewarded, with blue skies, no mud and almost no air turbulence. So well done, and thank you for sticking with it, even when you were too hot (or cold) and muddy. Now it is May, we would like to think more sunny days are in store from now on...
On with the business in hand and it was presentation-central for event 61 on Saturday, as we handed out T-shirts to numerous runners who have recently entered the ‘50’ or ‘10’ club; factoring in the odd missed week, illness and injury, it is great to see that we now have a glut of runners whose perseverance and consistency is rewarded with a subtle, inconspicuous, blend-in-to-the-background bright red T-shirt. In all seriousness, they really are a badge of honour and you should all wear them with pride, well done!
Results
The turnout on Saturday was terrific, once again, with 22 newbies and almost a third of you setting new personal records. We have had over 150 runners in three of our last seven runs, and are consistently seeing attendances over 140, which is great for our growth and probably the best compliment we could receive, so continue to spread the gospel, we want 160!!
Out on the course, it was Andy Townsend of Horwich RMI Harriers who recorded the best time, his second win at Bolton in six goes, in a time of 17.26s, ahead of two-time previous winner Kieran Horrigan in 17.31s. Steve Nolan of Burnden Road Runners was third back in the clubhouse in 17.44s.
For the girls, it was Junior runner Olivia Kearney (Bolton United Harriers & AC) who came in first in 23.04s, with Christina Wright (Horwich RMI Harriers) second in 23.56s and Catherine Fox of Darwen Dashers third in 24.04s.
As we are a couple of months into the new competition year, now, the points tables are starting to take shape, and the standings are as follows:
Men's annual points competition:
- Robert Short (Burnden Road Runners) 1142 pts.
- Steve McVey (Unattached) 1116 pts.
- Derek Lord (Littlewoods Leggers) 1030 pts.
Women's annual points competition:
- Emma Holden (Burnden Road Runners) 1067 pts.
- Olivia Kearney (Bolton United Harriers & AC) 1062 pts.
- Ann Oliver (Burnden Road Runners) 924 pts.
In age-graded terms, the aforementioned Oliver (85.67%), Horrigan (85.54%) and Nolan (84.49%) made up the top three.
This week at Bolton parkrun there were:
· 151 runners
· 22 first timers
· 49 recorded new Personal Bests
· Representatives of 16 different athletics clubs took part.
Special Plaudits
· Well done to the Kearney family, who recorded a brilliant three PBs – for Peter, Louise and Joseph – to accompany Olivia’s overall win in the ladies section, in her T-shirt-winning tenth parkrun. Superb family performance!
· Well done to our April Sweatshop Prize Winner Karen Hill who, after having her new trainers fitted at Sweatshop Chorley this week, only went and took 53s off her PB, notching up her fourth consecutive best, great work Karen!
· Similarly, Peter Johnson further extended his PB lead over his dad Paul, marking his 47th run with a fifth consecutive PB. Keep it up Peter!
· More happy snappery from Alan Tatterton means we will have some more great pics soon on the Facebook page, it’s great to see the documentary evidence of the runs, I am sure you all enjoy looking at the photos.
· Well done to Chloe Weaver and Robin Chan for joining the ‘10’ club on Saturday, we hope to see you hit ‘50’ in the next year!
· Thanks, lastly, to Steve Thomasson for returning to his Lycra-clad roots. In case you don’t know Steve, or missed him (you won’t have done), he was the man in the luminous top. With the eye-watering Lycra shorts on. We missed them, Steve!
In this week’s PB Hall of Fame, we have the following athletes:
Andy Townsend, Nathan Townsend, Thomas Smith, Mark Williams, Peter Kearney, Edward Whytock, Paul Speed, Gary Taylor, Peter Johnson, Ato Erzan-Essien, David Preece, Keith Savill, Christina Wright, Karen Atherton, Charles Kattakayam, Jennifer Fishwick, Gary Fitton, Louise Kearney, David Tipping, Helen Critchley, Christine Sweatman, Mandy Whitehead, Gareth Riley, Julie Newton, Vicky Hutchinson, Judith Bonnar, Ann Oliver, Fiona Ashton, Alison Ainsworth, Amy Morgan, Ross Dickinson, Brigitte Wainman, Rob Went, Justin Hague, Karen Hill, Katharine Noxon, Joseph Kearney, Alison Fishwick, Muaf Ismail, Mel Gill, Helen Archer, Angela Smith, Amanda Hagan, Jane Bunn, Debbie Fitton, Dawn Grundy, Marie Brooks, Christopher Hadfield and Shamine Harding. Well done to you all!
As ever, thank you to our wonderful volunteers, who make Bolton parkrun happen, this week the following bumper turnout brought your free weekly run to you:
Alan Sweatman, Alan Tatterton, Alistair McArthur, Andrew Patterson, Chloe Pendlebury, Christine Pendlebury, Dave Hitchen, David Ardill, Hannah Evans, John Hall, Kate Holden, Kath Henderson, Marisa Frot, Rob Short, Rowan Ardill, Shirley Tull and Bill Hargreaves.
At the time of going to press (old school), I have not been able to get hold of the final positions or names of any of you guys who might have taken part in the Horwich Triathlon on Sunday, but please do let us know how you get on, we love to share your successes and achievements, so please get in touch, via the normal channels (Facebook, Twitter, boltonoffice@parkrun.com, talking to us, pigeons, letter, telegram, TV ad, psychic messaging) and keep us updated.
I am home at my parents’ this weekend, for the Bank Holiday, and as I write, I am looking out over the garden in which I scored many a world class overheard kick (it’s my report, it happened...) as a child. And the sun is shining. The power of persistence.
Have a good week parkrunners, see you all soon - I am off to put my footy boots on...

Bolton parkrun mid-week update – 03/05/2012
Hello you lovely people of the Bolton parkrunning variety! Just a few updates that we couldn't bear to keep to ourselves...
April Sweatshop Prize Winner
Congratulations are in order for one Karen Hill, the April winner of our monthly Sweatshop prize! Karen ran all runs in April, which brings her Bolton parkrun attendance tally to a whopping 39 runs. Karen notched up a 51 second improvement in her finish times, which represents a total improvement of 9 minutes and 20 seconds since her first run back at event #5.
Karen's prize is a free pair of running shoes, which will be fitted by the lovely staff at a lovely Sweatshop branch of her choice (we're obvs biased to Stu and his team at Sweatshop Chorley!) We need to take this opportunity to thank Sweatshop for continuing to be such huge supporters of all things parkrun.
WANTED: Awesome volunteers of awesomeness
If we were your current account, things are looking pretty skint in terms of volunteers! (#PoorAnalogy #NeedlessHashTagUse). Whilst Row, Dave and I would love to prove that we could run the event with just the three of us, we'd all age by about 50 years with stress. Currently the roster only has a few helpers on it. If you would like an extra 100 volunteer points against your name and receive unlimited love and thanks from us (in an appropriate manner) please could you email us at boltonoffice@parkrun.com? Remember, volunteering needn't get in the way of your run, how about a warm up jog to put the cones out at the park? Or a warm-down run that includes collecting a sign or two?
KM Markers Ahoy! (aka the best news ever about kilometre signs... in the Bolton area...on a Thursday...)
Over the last year, many of you have gotten in touch to ask about whether Bolton parkrun might employ some KM markers, which are used at some other parkrun events. We've not used these to date as we've been learning just how to set up the course properly, and had other priorities such as making a finish funnel.
That being said, we've come a long way in the last 60 events, so four lovely KM markers will soon be “marking” their way to the course soon. We'd love some wooden stakes on which to hang these yellow markers of joy: If you know where we might be able to find some, or if there's an inner joiner within you just waiting for an opportunity to whittle some wood, please do let us know!
Rowan, David and I will all be there on Saturday, and we look forward to seeing you there. Smiley face!
