I took an interest in running 25 years ago, pounding the streets of Whitstable with a friend, taking part in the odd race that happened to be in the area. I developed a taste for races with the annual ‘Race for Life’ which takes place close by. I joined the Canterbury Harriers and found that I so enjoyed races (although not fast, nearly always last) that one weekend when there was nothing on, I did my first parkrun at Bromley. I thoroughly enjoyed it but as it was a 5 hour round trip decided we should have one in Whitstable. So here we are!

I started running in 1998 as I wanted to run a marathon for charity which I did in 1999, I was lucky enough to run the London marathon. I have been hooked on running ever since! I have been a member of Canterbury Harriers since I moved back to Whitstable four years ago having grown up in the town. I have recently done a course to become a Leader in Running Fitness.
I am delighted to be involved in the setting up of the parkrun in Whitstable and I am sure it will become a very popular event in the town.

I started running at the relatively late age of 28 (now well over 40!) as a result of a cancelled aerobics class. I was working at Bath University at the time and was in the habit of doing a couple of lunch time classes. On one particular summer’s day the class I was due to attend was cancelled. This news was imparted by the instructor, who, seeing that me and my mate were a bit peeved, told us to get outside and run instead! Well that was it; I did go outside and still remember to this day struggling to run for 1 minute continuously. From my first run-walk experiences I’ve progressed quite a bit and managed to transform myself into an Ironman triathlete. Anything is possible if you give it a go – so go on, you know you want to!

Running has been part of my life since starting at school and still continuing well into my late 50's. Although PB's are now a thing of the past I still get excited at the challenge and pleasure of training and the odd race. The Whitstable course is beside the sea and so the different seasons will provide plenty of variety and interest for those taking part. These days I get equal pleasure from encouraging others new to running and the park run offers plenty of scope for offering advice and seeing others improve their health and fitness.
...and everybody else
Tony Savage, Peter Mcquire, Carolyn White, Marco Keir, Rob MacDonald, Brian Forbes-Turner and Marilyn Yarlett will also be regular volunteers.
