ED RETURNS WITH A STUNNING WIN - 19TH MAY 12 |
|
|
Edward Chuck returns to Whitstable after a break of 5 weeks to take men’s first place with such grace and style you would think he was on a Sunday afternoon stroll…and with a PB! Chris Reid was 2nd within seconds of a PB and Mick Ellesmore was 3rd. Mick is from Cambridge Harriers but I hear they are not proper runners. Fell over clutching a feather! Can anybody tell all?
Lisa was our first lady home with a fabulous race to the finish. She was a few seconds of her PB but Fred Ingoldby and Ross Blythe who thought they could get the better of her, and didn’t, did have Pbs. 2nd was Julia Marshal with a PB, and 3rd Harriet Owens.
It must be wonderful to be a front runner and sooo unfair when middle and end of the field put in as much effort but they have to do it for longer. (Ah, but do we burn more calories?). Nobody underestimates the amount of effort that everybody puts in to take part in a run so you are all heroes and heroines in our eyes. Well done everybody.
We have had a spate of those reaching their junior 10s and 50 runs lately. An analysis of those regular Whitstable runners this week who have reached dizzy heights are:
>70 Terry Brightwell
> 60 Bill Wright
>50 Sonia McNally, Bret Hutchins, Alex McDonald, Andrew Beeching, Richard Lambert (birthday boy) and Phil Potter
>10 Juniors Arthur Freeman and Harry Elgar,
There were 35 Pbs this week…just gets better. Stuart and Charlie Eastman were under 35mins for the first time and Jennifer Scanlon and Corinne Hedges were under 30. Well done everybody who had a PB this week and welcome to our 12 new comers.
21st June 12. Midsummer run, commencing at 7pm. If the weather is nice, bring your families and a picnic and enjoy the long evening with lovely views over to Sheppy and Southend.
The parkrun report follows. Please note those who were best age graded this week AND THEIR AGES! There is hope for us all.!
Happy running.

RECORD NUMBERS JOHNs PJs vs WEATHER - 12 MAY 12 |
|
|
Fantastic turn out today with a record number of 154. We think the thought of John in his pyjamas brought you all out, but the gorgeous weather may have helped. John and Ange thank you very much for your generosity which has given approx £107 to Ange’s support centre. If you are running for a good cause pl tell us and we can announce it for you.
Joe Thompset was first man home and within a whisker of a PB but then he had Jamie Bailey chasing him! Chris Reid 3rd man, again within a whisker. Lisa Reid was our first lady for the 17th time, Harriet Owens was 2nd and Julia Marshall was 3rd with a sizeable 26s PB. There were 25 newbies today. Well done to all for making it to the start line, the biggest step of all, and completing the course.
There were 40 PBs giving us a fantastic 30%. The phenominal Mike Weed does it again by a minute, Adele Bright and Chloe Robertson were under 30mins for the first time. Welcome back Carolyn Duey with a big PB.
Huge huge congralations to Sonia McNally as our first women to reach 50 runs. What a milestone. Also to Alex McDonald and Brett Hutchins for joining the 50 club this week and to Junior Harry Elgar on his 10th.
There are rumblings from ‘the office’ regarding barcodes. No barcodes, no time is the mantra…however we haven’t the heart to deny you when you have put the effort into a run and we have the technology. However, please bring your barcodes with you in future. Any problematic barcodes - we have the technology in Jerry Kelp and he will sort for you. Thank you Jerry. Normally you would have your results round about 11.15am but problems at ‘the office’ server meant a delay today.
I missed the scan of whoever was 27 (just behind Lisa Reid, 1st lady) so please email me so I update the records.
The parkrun report will be attached later. Happy running.

Nancy McDonald, Sweatshop Winner Apr 2012 |
|
|
Nancy was our choice as the Sweatshop winner for April 2012. At first she stood on the sidelines and supported son Alex and always said that running wasn't for her. When she tried it, to everyones surprise, she liked it and has been a regular since and in 26 runs produced 7 PBs including one in April. She has improved by 4:24 and completed all the runs in April,
This is what Nancy had to say on being told she was the winner
"Thank you so much for selecting me for the monthly sweatshop prize.I never thought I would ever have a prize for running having spent my life avoiding taking part in sport.Having gone from struggling to run 100 metres it is with great amazement that I can now run 3 miles!A big thank you to all the volunteers who keep me going every week and to the other runners who make the event supportive and friendly.I look forward to choosing my trainers.
Best Wishes
Nancy McDonald
We'd like to thank Hugh Brasher of Sweatshop for his generosity and to congratulate Nancy on her achievement. Her prize is a new pair of running shoes fitted at the local Sweatshop.
The winner is chosen by the event director or members of the committee designated by here. The successful candidates are often chosen for their perseverance, number of PBs in one month, total number of runs and improvement overall. However, we can award the prize for other reasons at our discretion. If you know someone who has overcome adversity, personal illness or is deserving in any other way, please let us know by emailing whitstableoffice@parkrun.com and we promise to consider your nomination.

WINDY WHITSTABLE - 5TH MAY 2012 |
|
|
What a run. Some of you must have seen the weather forecast this morning and decided to stay in bed. However, the heavens smiled down on Whitstable, yet again, and although overcast the rain stayed away. There were no reports of anybody sinking in the mud…so all in all, a good one!
There were 102 brave runners today battling against a strong wind going out (which was noticeable by its absence on the way back) including an amazing 11 newbies, one of which was Kev Gadd who was second in 18:36.
Chris Valdus and Lisa Reid were first guy and gel, so well done to them. 2nd lady Julie Khan, close to a PB and 3rd Julia Marshal. 3rd man was Malcolm Martin. However, we are all winners so a big pat on the back for all of us.
The value of a pacer cannot be underestimated. Tina, one of our resident pacers brought Rachel Beecham and Charlotte Farrant home with good PBs this week.
T shirts have arrived and await collection.
Nancy McDonald is the Sweatshop winner for April, look out for her running story later in the week. Nancy sat on the sidelines with a yellow jacket for several weeks supporting her son Alex whilst he ran. She was often asked if she wanted to join in but always said, ‘No, No not for me’! However she dipped her toe in and since has hardly missed a week. Picture of Arthur Freeman with his special trainers as March winner.
Next week John Wilkins will be running in his pyjamas in support of his wife Ange who has non remission MS. Ange is a regular marshal and sits in her wheelchair taking notes of all of you who have forgotten barcodes or have barcodes that won’t scan so you won’t miss out on results. There will be a box on the reception table if you wish to donate to Ange’s support centre which is self funding. You may if you wish, support John and also wear your night attire! Just don’t fall asleep on the job.
The parkrun report follows, happy running and good luck to all those who are taking part in the Whitstable 10k on Monday. All your usual marshals at parkrun will be there assisting and will be looking out for you.

No rain to stop play |
|
|
Well, what with that downpour at 7a.m. this Saturday morning we were expecting a slippery chase along the slopes in our galoshes, but the rain held off long enough for the morning’s yomp, the grass was dry enough, and though there was a brisk breeze at least it was against our backs down the home straight. We had a cracking 93 finishers and among that rabble 20 first timers. Fantastic!
Despite battling into the wind along the prom, 12 of you recorded pbs, and we know that at least Hilary Covington was frustratingly close to hers.
Young Thomas Hughes made his third appearance since last September. Keen to keep his fitness up now that the football season has ended, he gave his father Mick and pacer Mel a run for their money with a strong sprint to the finish line.
Terry Brightwell, Tina Jones and Bill Wright completed last week’s London Marathon in good time. Perhaps more of you ran it, if so let us know and we’ll pop you in the News for a mention.
Though we’ve got a few men (with Whitstable as their home run) through the 50 run milestone, I don’t believe that we have any women yet; however this is set to change as this Saturday saw Sonia McNally complete her 48th run. Nearly red 50-shirt time for you Sonia.
Good luck to those of you running the Whitstable 10k this coming bank holiday weekend. Enjoy it, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for good weather.
And happy running to the rest of you.

Robert CARPENTER (SM35-39) of Ashford & District RRC, was first in 19:04 - first appearance.
