Aberdeen parkrun Event number 362: 14th July 2018

Congratulations to Roger Appleby on his 200th parkrun today
Bryan was your run director today -well for the finish?
For only the second time in our event Bryan left the finish tokens at home in Ellon and had to go back and get them. Graham took over as the run director after a quick meeting with the core team who were at the event. Graham did a great job and we decided to delay the start for 5 minutes to allow some time for Bryan to get back with the finish tokens in time, but we did have some extra volunteers stepping up to help just in case he was not back in time with an alternative plan of getting the runners placings and finishing barcode numbers when the runners finished. However Bryan got back with a few minutes to spare so all was back on course. (Edit: For the record, the one other time the finish tokens were forgotten, it was by none other than your Run Reporter, Colin Burnett! On this occasion Alan Brown came to the rescue, driving to Colin's house to collect the aforementioned tokens, thankfully hitting every set of traffic lights at green on the return journey!)

Running tip of the week-
Where can I get some useful tips on improving my running?
You can go on the internet or read in books
parkrun have some great tips from national runners and coaches on the newsletter page each week “Parkrun Pacers”. To improve your running.
But the one that is possibly the best is to go the café after our event where you can get tips on your running from our runners.
The experience they have and the different methods of training they do is great to hear and you can then try a few things that will help your running.
I won’t see you next Saturday as off to London for a few days and of course take in a parkrun!
Enjoy your run.

Just e-mail in to our volunteer co-ordinator Fiona at the following email address - aberdeenhelpers@parkrun.com - to choose your role and date you can volunteer.

Running tip of the week - Warming up
It is important you warm up before you start running at your pace you want to run. If you are training during the week try walking the first 100 metres then slowly easing into a jog and then increase to your running pace. Take this as a time to focus clear the mind and warms up the muscles ready for the run ahead.

Special Mention Award
The runner who deserves a special mention this week is Ally Sutherland
Ally has now completed 213 parkruns and last Sunday he guided Samantha Cumming around the hilly Stonehaven Half Marathon. Samantha is a visually impaired runner and Ally had attended the guide training and did a great job in keeping Samantha right and giving her the confidence to complete the run. Ally topped this off with a PB today. Ally has 2 marathons in the coming weeks the Dundee Dram and Fort William Marathon before taking a well - earned break. Well done to Ally.

Thanks to DW Fitness Centre for handing out vouchers to attend 3 free sessions at the fitness Centre. Cross training can provide a very good fitness base to help improve your running and fitness.

See you next Saturday.

Running tip of the week- How to slow down to run fast?
I read lots of tips on focussing your mind and ensuring you get rid of any nervous energy which can slow you down as you waste more effort as a busy mind can lead to feeling fatigued.
Take steps to slow down and channel your focus and calm the nervous system
This will help you recharge your mental batteries
Practice this—
Sit comfortably eyes closed
Start to count your breathing( count 1 breath in and count 2 breath out )
do this up to 10.
Did you lose count -did your mind wander?
Try again or do for 1-2 mins
You will feel refreshed.
Post run Yoga—
We had some of our runners after the run doing some yoga exercises with Ali Mathers ( a yoga instructer) who kindly offered to help out after the run.
It was great to see and hope we can do this feature more often with Ali.

Thanks for today and see you next Saturday.

Running tip of the week- Rest and Volunteer
If you have race the next day after parkrun why don’t you take it easy the day before, rest up and volunteer at parkrun. It is a great way of still being involved and you will benefit from the rest on race day and have more energy for the race.

Thanks to the runner who nominated myself for a “kudos from parkrun for my volunteering and runs at parkrun.
Did you take part in nominating anyone for a mention for their volunteering help and support in one of the recent surveys from parkrun HQ

Run Report – Event 358 on 16 June 2018

Huge thanks to our fifteen wonderful Hi-Vis heroes today:

Vivienne LAIN • Victoria NOAD • Alan BROWN • Fiona SEWELL • Suzanne MURDOCH • Margaret TURNER • Rajendra REGMI • Ilona KRIAUZAITE • Laura BARRIE • Bryan MILLS • Neil MCBAIN • Alan SMITH • Maureen YOUNG • John TURNER • Reece CARSON

It was a lovely sunny day (albeit with quite a strong headwind on the upper prom) for the 309 people who ran, jogged or walked the course this morning. We had 41 first timers including visitors from Hackworth, Darlington South and Newmacher Running Group. One of our visitors, Helen Bethell, is aiming to run 52 parkruns in a year, come rain or shine, to raise money to help fund a life-changing operation for Emil, a little boy with Cerebral Palsy who around the age of 5, can have an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). This involves cutting the sensory nerves in the lower spine, in turn reducing the abnormal messages Emil currently receives from his sensory nerves. SDR is not currently funded by the NHS but is offered as a “self-funding” programme and the family are therefore responsible for the cost of the surgery and months to years of intensive physiotherapy post-operation. The cost of this is around £40,000. Best of luck to Helen on the rest of her parkrun challenge and raising money for this very worthy cause.

Congratulations to all our parkrunners who were marking milestones today including:
150th run - Rajendra Uprety
100th run - Esther Fowler
50th run - Shirley C, Jonathan Sayers, Simon Dijker and Helen Duguid
We look forward to seeing you in your new t-shirts soon although Rajendra has a few more runs to do before getting the coveted 250 t-shirt!

Congratulations also to the 43 parkrunners who recorded new personal bests today - a great effort given the windy conditions this morning.

Results from today's run:
1st Male Finisher was Unknown
2nd Male Finisher was Mads Troldborg in 17:56
3rd Male Finisher was Tristan Glasse-Davies in 18:10

1st Female Finisher was Hannah Mutch in 20:13
2nd Female finisher was Janani Mohan in 20:33 (new PB)
3rd Female finisher was Elizabeth Kerr in 20:58

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Aberdeen parkrun Results Page.

A plea to all our parkrunners - if you cross the finish line PLEASE take a finish token and only cross the finish line ONCE. There were a number of finishers who did not take finish tokens today as well as people who ran through the finish more than once. Doing this messes up the results for every person who finishes after this has happened. We have a very simple results system so please make it easy for your Run Director to process the results each week by following these simple rules
- if you don't want a time, don't cross the finish line.
- if you cross the finish line, take a finish token and either get it scanned or hand it in at the scanning table. Thank you!

We have Garioch Road Runners talking over the volunteer roster next week but there are plenty of free roles on 30th June. Remember we can put your name down on the roster up to a year in advance so if you know you are racing on a Sunday, please consider volunteering on the Saturday. If you would like to volunteer please drop us an email at: aberdeenhelpers@parkrun.com :-)

We look forward to seeing you next week when Bryan will be your run director.

Aberdeen parkrun No:357 9th June 2018

Many thanks to all who came along this week. 264 people ran, jogged and walked the course. There were 21 first timers and representatives of 17 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 16 volunteers-many thanks to:

There were many locations throughout the UK who got involved celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the NHS and had a volunteer roster takeover day. We are lucky to have volunteer roster takeover days by many local groups and did have an NHS one not so long ago. We would like to take this opportunity however to thank not only our runners and volunteers who work for the NHS but also everyone involved in the great work they do. One special mention must go to one of our regular runners and volunteer, Rosey Leiper who has just recently retired from the NHS after 40 years’ service. Well done Rosey.

Well – he absolutely smashed it coming in in front of Craig in 19:32. It was so lovely to see the excitement his joy when he came over the finish line. Congratulations Jordan – what will you do next week?

60 of those who took part on Saturday recorded new Personal Bests – that’s 23%. Well done to all 60 and also those who recorded their best time this year.

We look forward to seeing you next week and in the meantime if you would like to volunteer please drop us an email at: aberdeenhelpers@parkrun.com. There are still a few gaps for next week.

Conditions today were good for a PB with all the pacers and the weather being great and the wind on the top promenade at our backs and after turning at the bus shelter the wind in our faces.
Did you run well did you get a PB?
Thanks to all the pacers for helping and supporting the runners
We had a record total of 92 PBs Today --33.76% of our runners. Too many names to mention today but you all must have been smiling after the run.
The secret to run faster is to smile when running! Believe it as the 92 runners were all smiling at the finish?
I was told it look great to see the line of pacers along the lower prom with bunches of runners hanging on to the pacer.
