Volunteering to Marshal at the 2017 Abingdon Marathon as part of Abingdon parkrun

The annual Abingdon Marathon takes place this year on Sunday, the 22nd October.

Abingdon parkrun has provided volunteer marshals in previous years, and, by way of thanks, the organisers have donated to parkrun funds. This has proved an important resource for our event, enabling the purchase of a defibrillator, and replacing the aging laptop computer we rely upon for getting our results processed each week, both without needing to appeal to our runners for donations.

The Marathon organisers still need a large number of Marshals for this year's event, so if you were able to volunteer to help, you would be supporting this prestigious, local running event, and at the same time, you would be helping Abingdon parkrun.

If you can assist, please register your offer of help at the Abingdon Marathon website, on the "Contact Us" page, picking the subject "AM - Offering Help":

http://www.abingdonmarathon.org.uk/contact.php?varrqust=AM%20-%20Offering%20Help

Please fill-in the message section with the name 'Abingdon parkrun' so the organisers can register our involvement.

Many thanks for considering helping Abingdon parkrun by volunteering to marshal at this important event.

Volunteering at this year’s Abingdon Marathon.

If you are able to offer your services to marshal at the Abingdon Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, 19th October 2014, please could you email us at:

abingdonoffice@parkrun.com

Applying to help through parkrun not only assists our fellow runners, but also directly benefits parkrun, as the organisers have previously kindly recognised our contribution by way of a discretionary donation.

This is a final call to reach people who haven't opted-in to Abingdon parkrun emails (hint, hint, check your results email for details on how to opt in and allow us to contact you ).

Please could you email us if you are available to offer your services.
We need to send in the final list of marathon volunteers this Monday, 29th September 2014.

It's a very rewarding way of getting involved in this high-profile running event, and at the same time helping your favourite local, free, timed, 5km running event.

Thank you !

New heritage trail opens in Abingdon

If you find yourself in Abingdon Market Place around 10:30 this Saturday morning, the 14th December, (and having just done a parkrun and enjoyed a coffee, you probably will) why not complete your morning by investigating this:

"The Heart of Abingdon heritage trail officially opens this Saturday. The trail features information boards, leaflets and sound recordings about Abingdon's ancient St Helens quarter. This Saturday between 10.30-45am, come to the Market Place to start the trail with a warming glass of berry cordial or go direct to see the Mayor open the trail officially at 11am at St Helen's Church."

Didcot 5 (and 2 mile fun run)

For seasoned parkrunners, and those newer runners who are getting comfortable with 5km, but aren't yet ready for a 10km, a local 8km race would seem ideal.

Organised by Didcot Runners, this year's Didcot 5 (and 2 mile fun run) take place on Sunday, 7th July 2013 at the Willowbrook Leisure Centre, Didcot, OX11 7AF
Start times are: Didcot 5 at 09:30 Fun Run at 10:45

"A ‘fast & flat’ 5 mile, one lap, road race run under UK athletics rules with a 2 mile fun run ...  with proceeds going to charity.
Memento to all finishers, race winners and age category winners."

Local Charity Event

Unconnected to parkrun, but a similar distance, local, so of possible interest to Abingdon parkrunners is the Bagley Wood Fun Run and Walk.
This is a charity 5.25km run (or walk) through scenic Bagley Woods in Kennington.
The Fun Run raises funds for Kennington Overseas Aid, which this year is supporting a local charity called Lunch4Learning, which will enable schools in Uganda to grow crops to provide nutritious lunches to their students.
A worthwhile project, and a nice run.
