Sweatshop Monthly Prize - August 2010

SweatshopHard to believe we're all another month older already, but we are and there's another Sweatshop prize to award, this time for August......................

And our winner of this fantastic monthly prize is Margaret Woods.

This prize is as you know is awarded to an athlete who has shown long term dedication as well as consistency and improvement over the month/s.

Margaret started running with us back in April and in 17 runs to date has set Pb's in more than 50% of them!

That included 2 Pb's from all 4 August events, reducing her best time by 1:17 in the process, with Margarets overall improvement since she started being 7:02 and in that time she has also taken her Age Grade from 48 to 59% – fab job Margaret

So it's congratulations to Margaret on winning this Sweatshop prize.

We'd like to take the opportunity to say a big thankyou to Hugh Brasher of Sweatshop for his generosity, with Margarets's prize being a new pair of running shoes fitted at our nearest Sweatshop in York.

PS - Are you seeing a white box round this text?  Me too and I've no idea why it's there

Before the weekend

Just a heads up before this weekends event - we will have Emma the Lucozade Sports Scientist with us for the 1st time in a while and it'll be great to see her back with us, so get along early/stay a little later if you want to have a chat with her - her visit is pretty good timing with the Middlesbrough 10k the day after

Now I wouldn't normally, under any circumstance turn away a volunteer, but we're very well covered this weekend for marshals now, so keep your powder dry for another weekend rather than this saturday if you were thinking of volunteering in the near future - thanks everyone.

Keep an eye out for another News Item in the next day or so too as we've reached that point again where we'll be awarding another performance based Sweatshop prize to one of you

Event 118 - 28th August

Well, it was great to be back after a few weeks away, even if I had intended to run before my calf went last Saturday while we were away - but I'm hoping that with Sharon Gayters help (and a bit of pain I shouldn't wonder from a massage) I'll at least make the M'bro 10k next weekend, fingers crossed!

Results have been processed and should be up soon with the report and pics to follow by mid afternoon, as I'm off to watch the Arsenal game now to see if we can withstand the aerial bombardment we're certain to get up at Blackburn - a great man once said "If God had wanted us to play football in the sky, He'd have put grass up there." but I don't think Sam Allardyce subscribes to that view - easy quiz question there though.................who said that?

Right, pics are up now, so just the report to do..............................

Arsenal started todays game very well, with Theo Walcott making a number of good breaks on our right flank and well supported by Van Persie who was starting in place of Chamakh today. With Song and Diaby controlling the midfield it came as no surprise that Theo oops, wrong report (you were right about Cloughie boys!), but meanwhile, back in the Park..............................

In his 3rd appearance, Matthew Hynes was again 1st man home for the 3rd time recording a new Pb time of 15:54. Andy Chadfield representing Billingham Marsh House Harriers & AC was 2nd man home and recorded a new Pb time of 16:17 in the process, while Richard Darling of Notts AC was 3rd man home in a time of 16:54.

In her 1st appearance with us, Maxine Czarnecka of Chester-le-Street & District AC was 1st lady home in a time of 17:16. Catherine McShane representing North York Moors Athletic Club was 2nd lady home recording a new Pb of 21:21 in the process, while Erin Pearson of New Marske Harriers AC was 3rd lady home in a time of 21:27.

In today's Age Graded competition, Maxine Czarnecka recorded our best performance of 85.71%

Over in the points competitions.......... for the men Iain Hall has a lead of 184 points over second placed Michael Hansell, while Linda Guy leads Anne Robson by 112 in the ladies competition.

This week there were 22 first timers with us - welcome everyone to the Albert Park parkrun

30% of todays field (68 in all) recorded great new PBs today - yes, even Michael Dixon who's good lady wife was planning on heading home after her stint on the computer with Claudia to tell him he'd just missed out on a sub 19 minute run today, when he hadn't at all - he'd aced it  Well done to everyone who Pb'd toady (especially my neice Lily who has posted 3 best times in her 4 August runs) and to everyone who ran today, Pb or no Pb, you all looked terrific out there.

I think looking at the stats we had the 6th or 7th highest parkrun attendance in the country today, which is a fantastic achievement across all 48 events and that's down to all of you supporting us in the way you do - so thanks for that everyone, long may it continue

Thanks to all the volunteers today, who were fantastic, but then we already know they are just the best volunteers bar none - but as ever, core teams always need marshals each week and if you check the Volunteer tab at the top of the page and can spot a week when you might be able to help out as a volunteer marshal, then please let us know on albertparkrun@gmail.com and we'll gratefully get you on the roster.

I think that's just about it for now, so enjoy the rest of the weekend/week ahead and we'll see you soon.

Andy

Parking

"You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today.

They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine.' So that was nice."

No, the recylcling of an old joke wasn't the reason for this post (well, not the main one anyway )

I have had an e-mail from the Council, saying they have had concerns raised by local residents about the way the participants of our parkrun park their cars on a Saturday morning, which in turn causes them difficulties getting on and off their drives.....................

These residents must be on Park Road South as Park Vale Road on which most (if not all) of you park on doesn't have any houses and that for me is the strange bit of this - as I see folk parking on Park Vale Road not on Park Road South, but I don't see everyone arrive so maybe some do.

If I was being cynical, I would suspect influence here from the usual suspects - creating an issue where there isn't one and trying to have another go at us as their usual modus operandi has borne little fruit of late - but I could well be wrong of course.

I have offered to speak to any disgruntled residents (I'm amazed they haven't come in and spoken to us themselves to be honest if indeed this issue has been there and causing them difficulties - we're not that unapproachable are we? And surely that would've been the most sensible way to resolve any perceived problem?) to assure them that since day 1 we have and are still continuing to do all we can to minimise our impact in whatever way on anyone else for the short while we are in/around the park each Saturday - so to that end can I ask that if anyone is parking near any residential property on Park Road South to do so in such a way that does not cause any type of obstruction to the owners.

Thanks

Event 117

Another pleasant morning for a run in the park - and aren't you all glad that wind dropped! The results will be up shortly as Julie has managed to bend her computer to her will and get them loaded. I am not having as much luck. I managed to load the photos from my camera using its own reader, but so far my computer is denying all knowledge of two card readers and two flash drives. It seems to be the USB ports so the computer is either going through the window or to a computer shop...

Hate technology when it doesn't work don't you?

We had lots of T-shirts to give away today with Heather Pearson, David Ainsley and Eddie Meehan all getting their 100 shirts. Soon to be followed by Paul Fallows who ran his 100th this morning. 50 shirts were awarded to Alex Chung, Barbara Rumsey, Avril Lilly and Andrew Featherstone with Junior 10s to Harry Larkin, Isabel Appleby, Matthew Rossiter and Isaac Allen. I think Harry may be our youngest 10 winner? Anyway all of these T-shirts represent hard work and commitment by everyone, so well done all.

Alan Guy would like me to mention the Christmas Party on 4th December (I know it's almost September already!) We've booked the bowling club on Cornfield Road in Linthorpe. So far I'm hearing word that Sharon's hubby is a DJ we also have a caterer sorted, although Alan wants to know whether people would prefer a buffet, pie and peas or whatever. Any thoughts on that please let Alan know.

Back on the running track. I should mention that numbers were a bit low today - below 200 for the first time in a while. Mainly holidays and the Ray Harrison 10K tomorrow I think. Good luck to everyone doing that

Big thanks to our Teesside Uni student Joanne who has been offering massages these last few weeks. Now off on well deserved holidays.

Tags 74 and 83 went home with someone. Can we have them back please?

That's about it for now. More when the results appear (unless I'm looking for a glazier by then...)

The results are now up.

In his 23rd appearance, Alan SHEPHERD (VM40-44) of Morpeth Harriers & AC won for the 8th time in a time of 16:30. This was a PB for Alan so looks like he returned with a vengeance! Hot on his heels was Chris DUNNE (SM30-34) representing North York Moors Athletic Club who took second by 4 seconds recording 16:34. Aaron LOWERY, (SM25-29) of Unattached placed third in a time of 18:29.
In her 10th appearance, Emma Laura WILLIAMS (JW15-19) of Unattached won in a time of 21:37 for the 4th time. Emma Laura WILLIAMS beat Louise TRAINOR (VW40-44) representing Quakers RC by 8 seconds recording 21:45 in the process. Sharon GAYTER, (VW45-49) of North York Moors Athletic Club placed third in a time of 22:37.
In today's Age Graded competition, Alan SHEPHERD recorded a performance of 83.33%
In the points competition Iain Gordon HALL has a lead of 173 points over second placed Michael HANSELL. Linda GUY leads Anne ROBSON by 165 in the ladies competition.
This week there were 15 first timers and a big welcome to you all. Come back soon.
A magnificent 53 runners recorded PBs, bringing the total number since the Albert Park started to 3357. In this time, 1718 runners from 75 different clubs have completed the race 13122 times covering a distance of 65610 kilometers.
The male course record is held by Thomas CORNTHWAITE who ran 15:13 on 17/04/10, event #99. The female equivalent is held by Carolyn SUMMERSGILL who ran 16:47 on 16/05/09, event #51.

Well done to everyone. Even if you don't feature in the names above, we know that everyone puts in a great effort each week. I should have mentioned earlier a well done to Emily McGough, who certainly didn't find it easy, but has now completed her 10th parkrun and will recieve a Junior 10 shirt before too long.

Congratulations to Sharon Gayter - back running amazingly long distances after time off with injury, 90km this time? - welcome back! Don't have details so if you want to tell us please do Sharon.

Finally to the lady I spoke to at the end who is training for the Tees Pride and worrying about not doing very well. Don't give up!
