Barnsley parkrun Event number 117 4th May 2013

It's a Record!

We had a record number of finishers last Saturday - 124! Hopefully as the summer goes on, and word spreads, we'll be beating that record again soon.

Sweatshop monthly prize winner: May 2013

We're delighted to announce that Barry Brenton was the May recipient of our monthly prize, generously supported by Sweatshop.
Barry's prize is a free pair of running shoes fitted out at his local Sweatshop store. Barry's been a regular parkrunner since March 2012 and has knocked over 6 minutes off his Barnsley parkrun time from when he started. We hope his new shoes will help keep the progress going, or at least make the training sessions a little easier.

Friends of Locke Park

It was suggested that we could have a family fun/sports day, to raise monies for Friends of Locke Park and Tower project. Alan, our Event Director, has been given a date of 22nd June. Any suggestions gladly welcome. The Friends Group will be attending parkrun 18th May so we can perhaps discuss then. Over to you guys, any ideas? Get your thinking caps on.

Virgin London Marathon

If you took part in the London Marathon don't forget to bring your medal and/or t-shirt this Saturday, we'd like to get a photo of all the Barnsley parkrunners that took part.
See you on Saturday
Chris

Monthly Social/Visit from Sweatshop

This Saturday is our monthly social so don't forget to bring some money for a coffee afterwards and:
Sweatshop, the number one running retailer in the UK and proud sponsors of parkrun, have some test shoes (with loads of life left), including some of the top brands, latest styles, that they are looking to clear through on at bargain prices from £25.
Some have only been worn once or twice for short runs and are in near perfect condition!
They will be visiting Barnsley parkrun as a one off, THIS SATURDAY, but this event will be CASH ONLY and products are sold as seen and cannot be returned or exchanged in store.
So if it's time for some new shoes you could pick up a bargain. See you tomorrow morning at Locke Park (Chris)

Barnsley parkrun – Event number 109 – 9th March 2013

The cafe

The cafe's been doing toast and tea/coffee for £1 for the last couple of weeks and will be adding porridge, fruit and tea/coffee for £2 this week. This is a great move forward for us all so please, let's support them as they wouldn't normally open during the Winter on a Saturday and are opening up just for us. So why not stay and have a cuppa and some breakfast after your run.

Don't forget your barcode #dfyb

It was easy in the old days when there were only a few people running round Locke Park but as the numbers grow it becomes more difficult to add runners to the results if they don't have a barcode so, as you'll have seen in the recent parkrun newsletter, "No barcode, no time". It's easy to get multiple copies just follow the link on the weekly newsletter that drops into your inbox print them off and distribute them amongst your bags, coats, glovebox etc. And if you do forget your barcode and run anyway please don't forget to take a token and get it scanned as your time will have been recorded on the stopwatch when you cross the finish line. You won't get a time recorded against your name but it does make the results so much easier to process when tokens match up with times.
Which leads me into...

...don't forget to keep left on the last lap

Recently we've had a few runners crossing the line to the right of the finish which is causing difficulties for us with the stop watch as we don't always know that you have finished, we had an example this week when someone ran behind the timekeeper got a finish token but we hadn't stopped the clock for them. We sorted it out but it takes time when we'd rather be having toast and a coffee. So in future unless you cross the line properly the clock won't be stopped and you won't get a token until you have crossed the line. So don't forget AT THE END OF THE 3RD LAP KEEP LEFT!

We really try and keep rules to a minimum but these little things really do help us with processing the results
