Barrow parkrun event 301 – 5th August 2017

301

This week, run director Donna Bates opened proceedings with a quick course briefing before runners, joggers and walkers made their way to the start line ready for the off.
The weather was kind for the 157 participants who took part, the 18 volunteers and many more spectators and supporters along the 5km undulating course around Barrow park. Of the 157 taking part, 5 were 1st time parkrunners. It's always good to see new people join the parkrun community and it's great to see so many come back again, this week 7 did so and all achieved a PB (personal best). Well done to you all.
Tourist parkrunners from Dalby Forest joined us this week, Stuart, Emma and Oliver Simpson and Shropshire Shufflers - Emma and Joseph Humphreys, not many can say they have carried an elephant around a parkrun but Joseph can. We hope you all enjoyed our course and it was good to see you.
1st to finish our 301st event was Lizzie Brown in a very impressive 17:24. Lizzie set the record time for fastest female back in 2012 and still stands at 16:24. Stuart Garnett finished in 2nd place with a new PB time of 18:48 and his 9th appearance. David Harker was 3rd over the line in 19:15 his 219th event to date. 1st Junior runners to complete the course this week were Luke Broadbent in 22:05 and Freya Nelson in 25:28.
What better way to celebrate milestone runs by letting other runners eat your cake! This week was a good one. Holly Gomersall completed her 50th event and is still in the under 11's catagory and also Ian Jones completed his 250th parkrun, only the 3rd so far to do so at Barrow. Ian first ran back in 2011 at Barrow's 5th event and has been a regular ever since. Congratulations Holly and Ian. Tribesports tshirts well deserved!
A mention to each volunteer who made parkrun happen today, without them parkrun can not go ahead and it's sometimes difficult for our event co-ordinator to get a full team together. Donna filled 3 roles this week so it would be really helpful to take a turn every so often. Thank you to - Ann Nicholson, Anthony Clarke, Bernie Mullen, Charlie O'Hare, Clare Greenwood, David Farish, David Spencer, Donna Bates, Heather Aitken, John Wearing, Karen Hawkrigg, Marie Morris, Michael Cook, Neil Stirling, Nicola Noble and Patricia Newby. Email barrowhelpers@parkrun.com to help or just appproach the friendly run director next time.
If you'd like to give parkrun a go, why not come along? It's free, friendly and there's no pressure. Dog walkers and pram pushers are welcome, under 11's need to be with a responsible adult, this is a parkrun policy. Details of how to register are here - http://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/, print your barcode and bring it with you. Once you finish you'll see how it works and later on you'll see your name on the results page here - http://www.parkrun.org.uk/barrow/results/latestresults/.
After the event many of us have a brew and chat afterwards at the cafe and there is usually cake. The cafe is close to the finish line and it's great to catch up with the friends and other runners.
See you next week.
Gary Woodhouse.
