Better weather than last week saw 173 people turn out to run, jog and walk the Barrow parkrun course on Saturday morning. After last week's washout everyone was glad to be able to enjoy the event in drier weather.
Local young flyer Ryan Everett celebrated his 100th run by finishing first in a time of 18:27 – out of those 100 appearances at parkrun he's finished ahead of the pack an incredible 48 times, second on 25 occasions and third place four times – if there was a podium in the park he could certainly carve his name on it.
Second place was taken by Andrew Dorrian, 11 seconds adrift of Ryan in 18:38. Third place was claimed by a visiting runner, Alice Leake in 19:11, placing her in the all-time top ten fastest ladies to finish the Barrow course.
Second placed lady was local Levens Valley Athletics club member Karen Oldham in 21:46, third place was Walney Wind Cheetah Amy Singleton in 22:12.
Completing the top three for the men was regular fast guy Dave Harker in 19:19.
Visitors from York and Leeds were "first timers" at Barrow along with a mystery first timer registered with Walney Wind Cheetahs but quite possibly more at home at the local zoo, "Charlie Cheetah"!
26 people recorded new Personal Best times, the best way to start your weekend, with a notable performance from young Holly Gommersall knocking nearly two minutes of her previous best, well done Holly!
Barrow parkrun, like all other parkruns, is completely free to enter and there is no pressure to run fast, you are quite welcome to run, jog or walk the course, no pressure and a great welcome awaits you! parkrun is a totally inclusive event and several people walk the course every week and are always supported by a "tail walker" marshal and receive just as much encouragement on their way around the course as the speedsters.
This Saturday, the 27th, is a Halloween fancy dress parkrun – get you scary running gear ready!
To join the fun go to http://www.parkrun.org.uk/register to register if you've never been before and print off your barcode then bring it along to the bandstand at 8:45 am on Saturday morning for the 9am run, see you there!
