New Years Day Double!

Bideford parkrun has teamed up with Barnstaple and Tamar Lakes parkrun to offer everyone two runs in one day!

Bideford will be starting off the morning with the traditional 9am start and Barnstaple and Tamar Lakes will start at 10:30.

See you there!

Juniors showing great presence at Bideford parkrun

Today we witnessed some very strong junior runners from Bideford AAC and North Devon AAC leading the way at Bideford parkrun this morning. Out of the top ten finishers this morning, we saw 4 under 14's and out of the top 8, we saw 2 under 10 year old boys! Great achievements by these runners.

It was also great news for 29 runners who smashed their personal bests and many more very close to them.. Great running everyone.

We welcomed parkrun friends from Little Stoke parkrun and Killerton this morning - we hope you enjoyed your run with us and we look forward to seeing you again very soon. The Little Stoke gang are staying over and are volunteering at Torridge juniors in the morning, so many thanks for this!

We are all very proud of everyone's attitude at Bideford parkrun with regards to other park users, other runners and also for thanking the volunteers - we hope this continues!

Lastly, it is important to fill the roster in plenty of time - especially for next Saturday. We will be busy hosting the event for many more runners from Barnstaple parkrun, as Barnstaple is cancelled for one week due to something else being held in Rock Park. Let's give them a warm welcome!

Til next week - Happy Running!

#loveparkrun #bideford

With all the media coverage surrounding Little Stoke parkrun over the past few weeks, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the importance of all of us being great ambassadors of parkrun as we all represent parkrun every time we run or volunteer at Bideford parkrun.

When we were at the planning stages of getting Bideford parkrun off the ground, we looked at various locations, but we were always drawn back to Victoria Park because of the beautiful park, the great parking, public toilets, local cafés, good road link in and out of Bideford and most of all the positive outlook of Torridge District Council. With both Bideford parkrun and the long established Torridge junior parkrun, held in Victoria Park on a Sunday, Torridge District Council fly the flag for parkrun and allow us to offer free, weekly timed runs for everyone. After Stoke Gifford Parish Council decided to charge parkrun UK to use Little Stoke Park to hold the parkrun there, Torridge District Council were very quick to issue a statement in support of parkrun to offer free runs throughout the UK and the world.

We all must ensure that we conduct every event professionally by respecting the surroundings, the park and every single park user which decides to be in the park at the same time as us! - everyone has the right to have a walk, sit and read a book, walk the dog, play football or use the footpath. All we need to remember is - it is us that turn up in mass and take over their normal routine!  If you do encounter a not so happy resident, please don't get into a debate, but be polite and report it to the Run Director on duty, who will deal with any complaint quickly! As we get larger attendances, we will get the odd grumble, but it how we deal with it, will be the success or demise of our event. In the 20 months of holding parkrun's in Victoria Park we have been very lucky how warming and supportive the local residents have been towards us using the park for parkrun events and filling the park with adults and children

As we state in the pre-run brief, we hold our event under licence from the council. We want to continue to offer you the opportunity to come to Victoria Park every week - so please use it and most of all enjoy it!! On a side note - we are hosting a Little Stoke parkrun tourism party this coming Saturday, so please welcome them and make sure we give them a great Bideford parkrun experience!

A great start to the weekend!

Part of the role of the Run Director, is to write a small article about their weeks event. It doesn't have to be written by them, it can be a runner or fellow volunteer. The report can be as long or short as you like. If you fancy writing it one week, please let us know!

This week, the Run Director was new boy Wayne Harris. Wayne has been an active volunteer at Torridge junior parkrun on Sundays for the past 14 months , together with his wife Charlene and son Tyler, they have volunteered most weeks to ensure the event is marshalled, scanned, timed and run directed as every event should be! - Between them they have more than 100 volunteer roles between them! - GO TEAM HARRIS!

Today, was a beautiful sunny morning. This encouraged 93 runners to pull on the Lycra and head towards the park, probably earlier than they would normally of got dressed and out of the door before Bideford parkrun started! Due to the dry weather, the course has firmed up nicely and this was one of the factors we witnessed 49 personal bests and many more very close to them!

We hope you agree that, although our event is only 5 weeks old it already feels very established and everyone has accepted our event with open arms. All the local residents, dog walkers and park users have been very supportive of us running in mass around their beautiful park. With this mind, we must respect each and everyone of them and if you are running, particularly in a narrow part of the course, please give way, or run on the grass and allow them safe passage. There is nothing more frightening than a 100 runners coming towards you! - please don't do anything to jeopardise our licence to hold the event.

Lastly, I would like to ask you all, to please take your turn to volunteer! If everyone volunteers 3 or 4 times a year, you are free to run the 48 remaining weeks! All the roles are very simple and it is very rewarding!

We look forward to welcoming you all again next Saturday

Dave Skeet
