With all the media coverage surrounding Little Stoke parkrun over the past few weeks, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the importance of all of us being great ambassadors of parkrun as we all represent parkrun every time we run or volunteer at Bideford parkrun.
When we were at the planning stages of getting Bideford parkrun off the ground, we looked at various locations, but we were always drawn back to Victoria Park because of the beautiful park, the great parking, public toilets, local cafés, good road link in and out of Bideford and most of all the positive outlook of Torridge District Council. With both Bideford parkrun and the long established Torridge junior parkrun, held in Victoria Park on a Sunday, Torridge District Council fly the flag for parkrun and allow us to offer free, weekly timed runs for everyone. After Stoke Gifford Parish Council decided to charge parkrun UK to use Little Stoke Park to hold the parkrun there, Torridge District Council were very quick to issue a statement in support of parkrun to offer free runs throughout the UK and the world.
We all must ensure that we conduct every event professionally by respecting the surroundings, the park and every single park user which decides to be in the park at the same time as us! - everyone has the right to have a walk, sit and read a book, walk the dog, play football or use the footpath. All we need to remember is - it is us that turn up in mass and take over their normal routine! If you do encounter a not so happy resident, please don't get into a debate, but be polite and report it to the Run Director on duty, who will deal with any complaint quickly! As we get larger attendances, we will get the odd grumble, but it how we deal with it, will be the success or demise of our event. In the 20 months of holding parkrun's in Victoria Park we have been very lucky how warming and supportive the local residents have been towards us using the park for parkrun events and filling the park with adults and children
As we state in the pre-run brief, we hold our event under licence from the council. We want to continue to offer you the opportunity to come to Victoria Park every week - so please use it and most of all enjoy it!! On a side note - we are hosting a Little Stoke parkrun tourism party this coming Saturday, so please welcome them and make sure we give them a great Bideford parkrun experience!
