Event #79

Good Afternoon Parkrunners,

Saturday was a windy one and once I had kicked most of the tree branches off of the finishing straight everything was ready for another fantastic Parkrun.

On Saturday we had 24 volunteers and 335 runners / joggers / walkers join us to make the event happen. Thank you to all of our volunteers who stood out in the windy weather:

Alex HOWARD  •  Catherine HOWARD  •  Chris CHEW  •  Claire CADZOW  •  David LAMB  •  Grace CADZOW  •  Harriett WICKS  •  Harry MANSFIELD  •  Jamie SPENCER  •  Jane MANSFIELD  •  Julie ROWE  •  Karen LAMB  •  Lisa MOSS  •  Luca SANTOS SIMS  •  Luke SHEPHERD  •  Mairi MALCOLM  •  Matthieu MILITON  •  Rosemary NUGENT  •  Sarah TURNER  •  Scott CADZOW  •  Scott NUGENT  •  Seth HUI  •  William ROWE  •  Woody HUDSON

We also had a few milestones on Saturday so congratulations on achieving your goal.

Also on Saturday a group from Coach Kate running group join us for park run. Kate brought a group of ladies who completed their couch to 5km course. Congratulations to you ladies and I hope you have fun with your running in the future.

A small side note, please please please be considerate to other park users during the event. We have no priority over other park users so please take care when going round the course. If there is someone on the path, whether it be a member of the public or another park runner, please just say excuse me or wait until there is a wider space for you to get past. Thank you!!

That's it from me, this week (23rd) I hand over to Kevin as your RD. If you would like to volunteer please contact us.

See you all soon and enjoy your week!

Castle Park parkrun Event #78

Usually I try to start my run reports with something that I think is terribly witty, (it probably is only me that thinks my reports are funny) but today however nothing is coming to mind.

So welcome to run report 78.

I will just clarify that this was event number 78 after mistakenly announcing on Saturday that we were at event number 79.... hopefully no one was listening.

It was another chilly morning in Castle Park, but my setup crew of Kobus, Corrado and Mark, as well as Pavel the Coffee man, were in good spirits and luckily they knew what they were doing, as after not being at Castle Park since 19th January, I may have struggled to remember exactly where to put the start!

Parkrun Selfie

Around 8.30 everyone began to arrive, and it was nice to see some new faces, both to run and to volunteer, I hope the 31 first timers this week enjoyed their experience at Castle Park. Tourists from not quite so far and wide this week, Panshanger, Dunmow, and Harlow, but the prize this week goes to our tourists from Norwich.

Despite the horrible weather and muddy conditions, I was A. grateful that people turned up on Saturday, and B. very grateful that all 372 of you made it round the course without slipping over and breaking a leg - far too much paper work! Hopefully next week the summer will return!

Startline

Now as much as we love our furry friends can I just remind everyone that they do need to be kept on a lead the whole way - sadly unlike child under 11 they can't be let off the lead for a sprint finish - hopefully the invisible leads I saw this week will have been replaced with visible ones next week!

As usual this weeks run was made possible by our 26 Hi - vis heroes; ( Correction - 28 Serena Beresford somehow is not on the list and sadly I can't give Pavel a volunteer credit),

Mark BURKETT • Melanie WATSON • Alex CADZOW • Grace CADZOW • Joanne COLEBOURNE • Jane MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Corrado LUPPI • Claire CADZOW • Mairi MALCOLM • Nina NASH • Kobus SMITH • Kirsten WIDDOWSON • Grant WIDDOWSON • Elanor CADZOW • Scott NUGENT • William ROWE • Andrew ARNOLD • Clare ARNOLD • Lucy DERRY • Jamie SPENCER • Tory FOOT • Luca SANTOS SIMS • Seth HUI • Joe HALL • Harriett WICKS.

A quick word about our volunteers, each week we get a report from parkrun HQ giving us a few statistics about how many people have run and volunteered overall.  Since Castle Park parkrun started in September 2017, 3,795 different people have run the course, but only 466 different people have volunteered, - so if you haven't given volunteering a try yet, come and give it a try, its easy and fun!

Right, only a short ramble from me today, I'm now off to sort the tokens, which I have again somehow forgotten to sort....

I would say its now over to Grace, but since its now Wednesday, I think its a little bit late for that, as she took over on Monday!

Have a lovely week

Castle Park parkrun Event #75

I was going to start this run report with a riff about how important it is for everyone to try and arrive by 0850 in order to hear the pre-run briefing and to make sure we can get the run away on time, given how many last-minute and late arrivals we had this morning. But then I would have to admit that I left home this morning without the keys to our kit storage and by the time I'd rushed back to get them I was 15 minutes late myself. So that would definitely be a case of "do what I say, not what I do"!

Anyway, apart from that small mishap everything seemed to go smoothly this morning. In total 344 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 3 were first timers; our first finisher was Brett Rushman in a time of 16:50, first female finisher was Liz Bellinger in 21:03. One of today's Tail Walkers, Rosemary Nugent, completed her 100th parkrun, and the following people completed their 50th: Eleanor Mason, Scarlett Mitchell, Annabel Kane, Jane Mansfield, Phil Mansfield, and Andy Sneddon. Well done all!

Of course the event doesn't happen without the help of our volunteers, who this week were:

Oliver LAST • Chris CHEW • Melanie WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Elizabeth BELLINGER • Woody HUDSON • Jane MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Shirley BALL • Mairi MALCOLM • Rosemary NUGENT • Danielle SIMS • Kobus SMITH • David LAMB • Rohit DAYAMA • Scott NUGENT • William ROWE • Andrew ARNOLD • Greta LYONS • Judith ERICKSEN • Alex HOWARD • Seth HUI • Shaun BALDING • Joe HALL

That's about it from me for this week; next week's event will be in Julie's capable hands.

Regards

Chris.

Castle Park event #74 – 9th February 2019

After last week's Parkrun was postponed due to icy conditions, the course conditions could not have been more different this Saturday. The set up team arrived bright and early reporting that the grass was muddy and slippery from the previous day's rain whilst the wind meant that some branches had to be removed from the course.

Despite this it was a beautiful (if a little breezy) morning for my first stint as RD and all the volunteers turned up on time and did an excellent job which eased my nerves considerably. It was brilliant to see so many people out in the sunshine getting active whilst also showing the amazing community spirit that Parkrun is all about.

This week 327 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 39 were first timers and 33 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 19 different clubs took part. A particular warm welcome goes to our tourist visitors from the likes of Stevenage, St Albans, Great Cornard, King's Lynn and Chester!

Congratulations to Suzanne Annis, Keith Kellard, Tim Benson, Vanessa Bowerman and Julie Rowe who all completed their 50th runs and David Rutter who reached 100 this week!

The event was made possible by 24 fabulous volunteers. Unfortunately no one came forward to act as photographer for the second week running so there aren't any photos. This week's volunteers were:

Paula REYNOLDS • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Lyndon HEARN • Kevin MULLY • Mairi MALCOLM • Luke SHEPHERD • Alison MALCOLM • Kobus SMITH • Ian PENSON • Helen BRUNTON • Eloise ATKINS • Graham SMITH • Scott NUGENT • Emma NICHOLSON • Elizabeth PHILLIPS • Diane FOSSEY • Simon DEWHURST • Sarah FOOT • Malcolm DEWHURST • Luca SANTOS SIMS • Seth HUI • Joe HALL

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Castle Park parkrun Results Page.

The male record is held by Ian KIMPTON who recorded a time of 15:37 on 7th October 2017 (event number 2).
The female record is held by Megan EVANS who recorded a time of 18:18 on 4th November 2017 (event number 6).
The Age Grade course record is held by Jenny BRAYSHAW who recorded 86.60% (24:08) on 10th February 2018 (event number 22).

Castle Park parkrun started on 30th September 2017. Since then 3,684 participants have completed 21,259 parkruns covering a total distance of 106,295 km, including 3,929 new Personal Bests. A total of 454 individuals have volunteered 2,223 times.

Thank you to everyone who ran and volunteered this week which made my RD debut bother stress-free and enjoyable! Enjoy your Sunday evening and all that is left for me to do is hand over to Chris who will be looking after you all next week.

Castle Park event #73 – 26th January 2019

For event number 73 on Saturday we had milder weather than the last few weeks, I'll avoid the term "warmer", but the course was very wet and slippery. In the coming weeks we may need to tweak the course to avoid particularly water logged areas both from a safety perspective, and also for the stewardship of the park itself. Please ensure you listen to the pre-run briefings when this information will be shared. This week was also the second outing of our staggered start to try and avoid congestion and make for a more pleasant run for all, if you could try and join the most appropriate start position this would be most appreciated.

A massive thank you to all 25 of our volunteers who turned out, without whom no one would run! Unfortunately no one came forward to act as our photographer this week so there aren't any photos. This week's volunteers were:

Andrea EDWARDS • Oliver LAST • Philippa WATSON • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Graham MULLY • Mairi MALCOLM • Nicholas YEADON • Patrick CHAPPEL • Kobus SMITH • Heidi ZIGIC • Scott NUGENT • Charlotte MULLY • Andrew TURVEY • Isabel ZIGIC • Simon DEWHURST • Laura MELLING • Marcus HOYLE • Paula WALKER • Charlie CARRICK • Judith ERICKSEN • Luca SANTOS SIMS • Alex HOWARD • Seth HUI

If you can try and help volunteer once in a while it would help to enhance the community spirit of our lovely event. Our VC would like to personally thank all those that kindly came forward on Saturday to volunteer in future weeks.

Well done to the 327 participants who ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 30 were first timers and 47 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 13 different clubs took part. A particular warm welcome to our tourist visitors from Great Dunmow, Great Notley, Barclay Park, and Rickmansworth.

Congratulations to Pascale VAN KOOLBERGEN, Fraser ARNOLD, and Kim FLIGHT who all completed their 50th runs!

This week's full results can be found on the Castle Park parkrun Results Page

I would like to thank parents for running with their under 11s this week, I don't believe any under 11s were unsupervised, which is really important from a safeguarding perspective.

Finally I would like to thank Kobus Smith for agreeing to join the core team as a run director. Kobus has been a real stalwart of Castle Park and has performed most volunteering roles, including setting up the event 50 times!

Kobus on setup

The male record is held by Ian KIMPTON who recorded a time of 15:37 on 7th October 2017 (event number 2).
The female record is held by Megan EVANS who recorded a time of 18:18 on 4th November 2017 (event number 6).
The Age Grade course record is held by Jenny BRAYSHAW who recorded 86.60% (24:08) on 10th February 2018 (event number 22).

Castle Park parkrun started on 30th September 2017. Since then 3,645 participants have completed 20,932 parkruns covering a total distance of 104,660 km, including 3,896 new Personal Bests. A total of 446 individuals have volunteered 2,199 times.

Enjoy your Sunday evening, next week your run will be brought to you by Francesca and her merry band of volunteers!

Castle Park parkrun event #72

So this week started off well or perhaps not so well... when I was exchanging the RD kit with Francesca at running club on Wednesday night, the kit was stolen! Stolen by who you ask? The one and only Dunmow parkrun core team..... if I were you I'd watch out for those Dunmow parkrunners, they're a sneaky bunch. :)

Now onto Saturday! Whilst the snow was falling and I was slowly becoming more and more frozen stiff with each passing minute, the setup team were in high spirits and somehow not affected by cold - probably something to do with Pavel's coffee! As you may have seen we've brought back the kilometre markers and due to the huge number of runners we are now getting each week, we are trying to organise the start more formally to ease the congestion in the first 500m meters. Please bear with us over the next few weeks as we try to sort out the best solution!
Setup volunteers

351 of you braved the cold this weekend, of whom 34 were first timers - nice to see that the cold didn't put you off! As usual we had our array of tourists from far and wide, Durham and Great Notley were amongst the contenders this week, but the prize this week goes to our tourists from the Isle of Wight.Smile and wve

Thank you all our volunteers this week; Samantha HOOD • Philippa WATSON • Fiona RUST • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Louise PARKER • Simon BARRIE • Justin EDWARDS • Joanne COLEBOURNE • Woody HUDSON • Naomi BARRIE • Mairi MALCOLM • Kobus SMITH • Dana SMITH • Rachel TURVEY • Scott NUGENT • Greta LYONS • Simon DEWHURST • Tory FOOT • Amy PETRIDIS • Ian LYONS • Simon GARDNER • Judith ERICKSEN • Alex HOWARD • Seth HUI.

As usual without our volunteers we wouldn't have a parkrun, so if you find yourself at a loose end over the next few weeks why not try volunteering. I know its going to get cold over the next few weeks, but us in England are obsessed with talking about the weather so I'm sure a little cold won't hurt us. :) I know that Kevin has quite an empty roster next week so if you are able to help us out drop us an email and let us know.

Just one final thing before I stop rambling and let you get back to getting on with your lives.... as you may have seen via Facebook we do actually have a trained and accredited guide runner at Castle Park parkrun. Ellen used to regularly be a guide when the parkrun took place over at hatfield forest, and still has her guide accreditation, so if you know anyone that would like to come along but would need the help of a guide please spread the word and let people know that running with a guide can be arranged.

Right enough from me, I'm sure you've all had enough of me rabbiting on! Kevin's in charge next week, please make sure to give him the same parkrun enthusiasm that you all give to me.

Over and out

Tory x

Castle Park Event #71

Well that was a busy morning! We broke the attendance record for the 2nd week running with 406 runners and walkers. The national statistics aren't out yet, but based on Facebook chatter it wouldn't surprise me if it's another record breaking week.

We welcomed 45 first timers to Castle Park and we hope to see you again. 59 participants recorded new PB's as well so I think the Christmas excesses have now been well and truly run off.

Congratulations to Diane Fossey, Helen Hollingsworth and Jay Price who all completed their 50th parkruns on Saturday.

The event was made possible by 25 volunteers:

Matthieu MILITON • Adam CHAPMAN • Martin MOULTON • Anne HALL • Joanne COLEBOURNE • Harriet WYATT • Ellen BROOKS • Graham MULLY • Shirley BALL • Mairi MALCOLM • Nicholas YEADON • Alison MALCOLM • Francesca PALMER • Kobus SMITH • Mark PALMER • William PALMER • Andy SNEDDON • Helen GLENISTER • Scott NUGENT • Simon DEWHURST • Dave HALL • Joey XIANG • Simon GARDNER • Judith ERICKSEN • Seth HUI

We can't put on a Parkrun without the volunteers so a big thank you to everyone who helped by volunteering on Saturday morning. If you are able to volunteer please let us know either on the previous Saturday or by emailing in during the week to castleparkhelpers@parkrun.com.

A few reminders

Under 11's - All children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult in arms reach throughout the whole course. (Sprint finishes excepted but a sprint finish doesn't mean that the child finishes 5 minutes in front of the adult).

Barcodes - the national rule is no barcode, no time no exceptions. All barcodes need to be presented in hard copy, there are 2 main reasons for this: the scanners can't scan phones and it is time consuming to enter a significant number of times manually; and your barcode should include your emergency contact details which I really hope I never have to use.

Congestion - it has been noted that there is a lot of congestion in the first mile, please try and ensure that you start in an appropriate position for your pace so that everyone can have a more enjoyable run.

Lost property - a green running top was left on Saturday to add to the collect of lost property which now includes a grey Nike hoody, a ladies Adidas hoody, a black hoody, black tracksuit trousers, a grey hat, a pink bag and 2 water bottles.  If theses items aren't claimed by the end of January they will be disposed of .

Tokens - we love our position tokens very much and 4 haven't come back to join their friends ready for next week. If you have accidentally taken one home, please can you bring it back, no questions asked.

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Castle Park Parkrun Results Page.

That's it from me - I'll be back in a few weeks and I leave you in Tory's capable hands for next week

Castle Park Event 70 – 5th January 2019

Well it was a record breaking day for parkrun in general – more than 164,000 participants nationwide, the most ever, and Charlotte Arter setting a new female record of 15:50 at Cardiff parkrun – so it was appropriate that it was a record breaking day for us too with our own highest attendance. An amazing 395 of you ran, jogged and walked your way around Castle Park. No doubt some of that was due to New Year’s Resolutions – which I hope you’ll maintain! – but we also welcomed a big group of Garden City Runners from Welwyn, as well as visitors from Belfast, Edinburgh, Barking and Billericay (sorry if I’ve missed anyone out!).

Danny Beazley was our first finisher in a new pb of 17:47, and Martha Hall was first female finisher in a time of 21:10.

Of course the event doesn’t happen without the volunteers who give their time, this week’s 24 hi-viz heroes were:

Oliver LAST • Chris CHEW • Matthieu MILITON • Melvyn GRIMWOOD • Christopher CONNELL • Harry MANSFIELD • Mairi MALCOLM • Rosemary NUGENT • Kobus SMITH • Helen GLENISTER • Sally HOUSE • Graham SMITH • Debbie FERGUSON • Rebecca SMITH • Sophie SMITH • Scott NUGENT • Sarah WEBBER • Alan SHINGLER • Margaret MITCHELL • Simon GARDNER • Judith ERICKSEN • Luca SANTOS SIMS • Alex HOWARD • Seth HUI

Do please look at the volunteer roster on the website and consider whether you could help us out over the next few weeks – none of the roles are very taxing and, if you need an extra incentive, you get half-price coffee at Pawel’s coffee cart!

There were a few milestones today: Keith Phillips ran his 100th parkrun; Grace Malcolm and Adam Shortland ran their 50th; and Harry Mansfield earned his 25th volunteer credit. Well done all!

That’s about it from me, I leave you in Francesca’s capable hands for next week.

Event #66 – 22 December 2018

Good afternoon although it was a wet and soggy course, the sun came out to shine upon the 286 people ran, jogged and walked the course for our pre-christmas run. Of these 16 were first timers and 28 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 15 different clubs took part. We even had tourists all the way from South Africa!

As always this event was only staged because of the kind 32 volunteers; who setup, marshaled, did finish area roles, or closed down. They were by name ...

Andrea EDWARDS • Philippa WATSON • Kevin WATSON • Melanie WATSON • Matthieu MILITON • Andrew THOMSON • Phil MANSFIELD • Harry MANSFIELD • Mairi MALCOLM • Luke SHEPHERD • Kobus SMITH • Patricia POOLE • Helen BRUNTON • Kate SNEDDON • Joe SNEDDON • Colette KERINS • Paul KERINS • Luke KERINS • Graham SMITH • Debbie FERGUSON • Rebecca SMITH • Sophie SMITH • Scott NUGENT • Elizabeth PHILLIPS • Simon DEWHURST • Simon GARDNER • Keith POOLE • Judith ERICKSEN • Luca SANTOS SIMS • Alex HOWARD • Seth HUI • Maria HUI
