Event Number 112 – New Year’s Day 2019
WOW WHAT A WAY TO START 2019!!
For our first ever New Year’s Day Run, 340 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 106 were first timers (and 16 were doing their first ever parkrun) and 46 people recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 41 different clubs took part.
340 is our highest attendance figure, our previous highest having been 210 people for our 100th parkrun celebration. It truly was an amazing honour to have been Run Director for this special event, and the atmosphere was fantastic with faster and less experienced runners cheering each other on. Thank you to everyone who came.
New Male and Female course records were set:
Ramadan OSMAN set a new male course record of 16:07, breaking the record set by Tom HIGGS that had stood for 2 years. What made this all the more amazing was that Ram was first finisher at Colchester Castle parkrun at their 9am run that same day.
Daisy GLOVER set a new female course record of 18:32, breaking the record set by Rebecca BUNTING back in March 2017. Another amazing time, especially given Daisy had run at Harwich parkrun at 9am, and was their first female finisher also.
Congratulations to you both, and I hope you will consider coming back to run with again as I would love to see what time you would achieve with less runners on the course and fresh legs …
In addition to the new male and female records, who both set a new age grade record for their respective category, we also have a 3rd age grade record set on New Year’s Day. Congratulations to Debbie CATTERMOLE who ran a time of 22:02 recording an 80.03% run in the VW50-54 category.
Our first three male and female finishers were:
Ram OSMAN (SM20-24) 16:07
Chris O’Hara (VM35-39) 18:21
Scott MANNING (SM25-29) 18:26
Daisy GLOVER (SW25-29) 18:32
Ella JEFFRIES (SW30-34) 21:37
Sadie MOORE (VW35-39) 21:47
The event was made possible by 13 incredible volunteers:
Lorraine GRINDROD • Mark GRINDROD • Mel WILLSMORE • Jack WILDERS • Pete INMAN • Paul CRAWFORD • Sam PLUMMER • Anna PLUMMER • Maria BLANCHE • Gill CUSHWAY • Peter JAMES • Daniel CASEY • Eric FARRANT
If we have a New Year’s Day run in 2020, we will know that we need to have more than 2 barcode scanners in order to avoid queues!!
Saturday 5th January will see the debut of our new Run Director Jack WILDERS who I am sure will be known to many of our regular runners as he has run at 80 of our 112 parkruns. I hope that many of you will be able to join us in order to give Jack a warm welcome to the team.
Thank you to you all for your support for our parkrun in 2018, and here’s to 2019.
Happy New Year
