Just a parkrun! – Event 308

Now I need to get something off my chest. I know my revelation will come as shocking to some but others will share my dirty little secret so I hope you can forgive me. parkrun isn't always enough!

There, I have said it... Sometimes I need more than just a parkrun.

Like others I love my free weekly run in the park, greeting familiar faces I have learned over the weeks and months, testing myself over the familiar 5km course, struggling to get that illusive (PB 4 years and counting!) but it isn't always enough. Not even the lure of being a parkrun tart and travelling further afield to a different parkrun course can satisfy my desires! Sometimes I need a race or is it the bling!

I know I am not the only one... From Facebook I can tell; so many tried and failed to enter the Two Castles. I recognised many parkrun regulars at the Coventry ½ a few weeks ago and next week the pull of that hoody (what colour will it be this year?) will have a few regulars missing their morning parkrun for the Ashby 20 on the Sunday as they rest up before the big race. Some may even swap their run for a spot of parkrun volunteering to make sure they rest properly. For some Ashby is just the final step before a spring Marathon – London, Stratford, Liverpool...

Why only last week I cheated on my weekly parkrun to run round an athletics track 105½ times – all for a cute medal! Makes only two laps of the Memorial Park parkrun seem far from repetitive. By the time I got to lap 93 a single thought passed through my head – and no it wasn't why did I pay to do this! – it was 'Just a parkrun to go!'

It was then that I realise how much parkrun has coloured my running life – I don't think of races as 10km but 2 parkruns! 10 mile race – ohhh that is just 3 parkruns and a slight warm up! Coventry ½ Marathon 4 parkruns and a long walk to and from the start from the carpark. A Marathon 8 parkruns with a proper warm up and cool down!

parkrun is not just an amazing free weekly event but now a standard unit of measure for runners.

When the weather is as spring like as it was today in the park, parkrunners stand and chat about forthcoming events, and in reassuring tones you hear the words, 'Easter 5, Oh it is just a bit longer than a parkrun and you can run that!'

Ohhh for the record Ashby is 6 parkruns and a proper warm up!

run report 3rd May 2014 Event 217

Early one Saturday morning a small group of people rose from their beds, scraped the ice that had formed on their cars, unchained bikes and made their way to a clearing in the park. By the time they arrived the sun was melting the last vestiges of frost and was beginning to warm the ground and air. Donning yellow tabards they went about their duties poking stakes into the ground, winding tape along paths and creating the magic that is Coventry parkrun. It seemed like any Saturday, yet this was no ordinary Saturday. This was the day records fell at Coventry!

As runners arrived, wiling sleep from their eyes, stretching early morning limbs the volunteers started whispering...could there be over 500? There were tentative guesses. What was the previous record? bets were made: 517, 530, 521? The runners set off! Two laps of the course they began to make their way through the finish funnel and past the time keeper. 1,2,3,4...100,200,300,400,500! Yes! could it be possible? The funnel team peered across the grass - were those people doing parkrun? And those? What was the record? How close were we? Slowly one by one more parkrunners crossed the line. Finally we saw the last two. Arriving with cheers of encouragement they crossed the orange line and the final count was in.

523

yes! 523! A new record for Coventry parkrun!

This amazing achievement happened firstly because the volunteers without whom parkrun cannot happen every week. This week Core Team C coordinated the event with:Alan SCHOFIELD • Alison CLARK • Andrew R JOHNSON • Andy SILLMAN • Bryan MERCER • Charles BRIMBLE • David TITTLE • Gaynor THOMAS • George Andrew AVERY • Grahame FLANAGAN • Jackie SCHOFIELD • Jason DOUGLAS • John DOUGLAS • Julie HALL • June JOHNSON • Maggie MORGAN • Mark FORSTER • Sara JENNINGS • Sue GOUGH • Tiffannie SLATFORD • Wendy FOXALL. We thank you for your time and enthusiasm.

Secondly the runners. Nick Willams, David Johnson joined the %0 Club, David Moore became a member of the 100 Club and Clair Taylor, Nia Millard, Andrew Sewell all completed their 10th parkrun as Juniors and will be soon be proud owners of their club t shirt. Teresa Mason became the second runner at Coventry to complete 200 runs. Although there is no official parkrun T for this achievement Teresa was given one at the start to help celebrate the occasion. Well done!

Next Saturday we do it all again. I wonder how many runners there will be? How soon before we have to break open the 600 tokens?

Run Report 21st march 2014

Coventry parkrun
Event number 211
22nd March 2014

Another Saturday, another parkrun! The weather fairies were kind to us this week providing a beautiful spring morning to enjoy. There was an amazing buzz in the park, no shortage of volunteers due to the Coventry half on Sunday and some parkrun milestones being celebrated. Special congratulations go to Bernard Blundell who ran his 200th parkrun! 200! No t shirt but a fantastic achievement. Congratulations also go to Jimmy Medici who ran his 10th run with a PB, Andrew Crabtree, 50 parkruns, and Dave Goodwin, Anne-Marie Paszkiewicz and Mike Duggan who all achieved their 100 parkruns. Thank you for the wonderful cake and jelly beans.

Coventry parkrun this week was brought to you by Core Team C. parkrun happens every week because of volunteers. Some give up their run, some give up a Saturday lie in. This week’s heroes were:

Alison CLARK  •  Andrew R JOHNSON  •  Charles BRIMBLE  •  Cheryl THOMAS  •  Dom CLARK  •  Gaynor THOMAS  •  Grahame FLANAGAN  •  Henry MARTIN  •  Jackie SCHOFIELD  •  Janet STEELE  •  Jason DOUGLAS  •  Julie HALL  •  June JOHNSON  •  Liam HALL  •  Lore PATERSON  •  Louise MACKIE  •  Makhan Singh JANDA  •  Mark HEMINGWAY  •  Pavlina JACKSON  •  Peter J HALL  •  Phyllis DOUGLAS  •  Sam RICHENS  •  Sara JENNINGS  •  Steve MACKIE  •  Sue GOUGH  •  Wendy FOXALL  •  Yana RICHENS

Have you thought about volunteering? Afraid to ask? Afraid you might mess something up? Have no fear! Everything is set up to be as simple as possible. So, what’s involved?

This week’s volunteer focus is number checker. It’s a safe guard in case something goes astray between the timer and the tokens. Every 10 or so finishers you write down the finishing position (from the timer) and then jog to the person handing out the tokens to get that person’s token number. It’s easier if you choose runners with bright tops. There’s a pre printed sheet to record the numbers. Simple! At the end you hand the clipboard and pen to the Race Director leaving you to enjoy coffee and cake in the knowledge you have done something amazing for parkrun that morning. You also get to wear a high viz jacket!

To get involved you  can see an event's future volunteer roster via their specific future roster page. To get in touch with the event directly, just send an email to coventryhelpers@parkrun.com. You will not regret it!

Coventry parkrun 207, 22 Februaruy 2014 – The sun has got his hat on.

The sun sparkled over the Memorial Park this morning drawing out 41 first time runners into our fold, hopefully we will see many return in future weeks. The persistent winter rain that has beset the country for the whole winter, held off, however the fields are showing the signs of damaged of the hundreds of feet that race over the mud – I mean grass - so an alternate route was run again this week.

The incline at the start towards the monument past the children’s playground rather than the muddy start of the field seemed to suit 81 people who raced over the tarmac and path that formed this dry route to personal bests this week. If we are to keep using this alternative route until the path dries out please can runners keep to the left especially at the start so that we don’t block other park users.

Well done to Kevin Hinson who today joined the 100 parkrun club, Chris Archer, Jack Langman and Stuart Heaton who ran their 50th parkrun and Rachel Betts who got her 10th parkrun. Remember to order those t-shirt and wear them with pride you earned them. After delving into the bags at the start I did spy a number of t-shirts so if you have joined a club and been informed that you have a t-shirt to collect don’t be shy just ask and you too can be the proud owner of a parkrun t-shirt.

Event Report Saturday 21st December 2013

Event number 197       21st December 2013

Our event this week was marked with sadness. Jason announced before the briefing that Matt Hall had passed away during the previous week. Matt was a familiar and much loved face at parkrun. Before the present course Matt was the first marshal you passed. Whatever the weather, he would be there warning of any hazards and encouraging us round on the first and second lap. Matt was a well deserved recipient of Volunteer of the Year last year and had won the Sweatshop monthly prize draw. Matt was such an integral part of the Coventry parkrun family. Our sincerest love and condolences go to his family at this difficult time.

This week was our Santa run. The event was organised by Core Team C and a fantastic group of volunteers who braved the cold and wind. Lots of runners turned up in Christmas themed fancy dress. As well as many Santas there were a few fairies, elves, a tree and one runner dressed as a present. Luckily the rain kept away so there were no soggy costumes!

Finally a reminder that there will be a parkrun this Wednesday – Christmas Day – at the usual time. There will be no facilities (i.e. toilets or cafe for your post run coffee and bacon sandwich) but there will be volunteers ensuring the run can go ahead.
