July Sweatshop prize winner announced for Glasgow parkrun

We are pleased to announce that July's Sweatshop monthly prize winner is Nicola Kinnaird

Nicola only started running in January, but she's become a regular at Glasgow parkrun, and makes it a real family affair: Her husband Chris runs the 7 or 8 miles to Pollok Park (great training for his debut marathon at Edinburgh back in May) whilst she drives over with the children. Chris then takes over childcare whilst Nicola runs the event. She's on a roll, having missed only 4 out of the last 25 events, and has a strong standing in the points competition as a result.

Both taking things very seriously with Paisley 10k this Sunday before the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon the following week. She was delighted to receive the monthly prize, and popped into Glasgow Sweatshop and went over the principles of pronation, and the benefits of getting a proper gait analysis.

We're delighted to recognise Nicola's efforts, contribution and support, as well as her excellent running achievements - Since starting at Glasgow parkrun she's set a succession of PB's, and her times have fallen from 30:35 at her first run, to 25:08 - a sub-25 time is surely just around the corner!

We'd also like to thank Hugh Brasher of Sweatshop for his generosity. Nicola's prize is a new pair of running shoes fitted at Glasgow Sweatshop. Sweatshop are one of the key sponsors that help parkrun continue, so we hope runners bear them in mind when they're next buying running gear.

The winner is chosen by the event directors or members of the committee designated by them. The successful candidates are often chosen for their perseverance, number of PBs in one month, total number of runs and improvement overall. However, we can award the prize for other reasons at our discretion. If you know someone who has overcome adversity, personal illness or is deserving in any other way, please let us know by emailing glasgowoffice@parkrun.com and we promise to consider your nomination.

Close run thing on the volunteers

Glasgow parkrun is on all year round: Keep coming after your target event!

Lucozade and Nike along next week

Event results and summary

Burrell Cafe

We know our message of helping out at parkrun gets a bit repetitive, but a week like this week emphasises why it's sometimes necessary: We were a bit short earlier in the week, but not as short as Strathclyde parkrun - their event was at serious risk of being cancelled due to the lack of volunteers.

The good news is everything came through in the end, and in Glasgow we're actually fine for volunteers for the next two weeks (Paisley 10k and the Glasgow Half Marathon/10k are popular events).

However, we'd really ask you all to think about what parkrun is about and how it works - particularly those of you who have run a good few times but not yet helped. We think it's more than a fast time, but about a real-world community of running enthusiasts coming together and putting an event on every week. It's supportive, and great fun to be a part of, and - of course - great to run in. But it needs everybody to chip in and help to keep parkruns going. If everybody helped out just a few times each year, we'd have no problems at all. But some weeks (like this week) we do struggle. E-mailing GlasgowHelpers@parkrun.com to add yourself to the reminder list, or checking out our volunteer rota at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/glasgow/volunteer.aspx are great first steps.

We saw a big turnout today, and we know a great many of you are along as part of your build up to the big events. We really hope your parkrun events have helped you in your training, and the best of luck for the event, but don't let finishing your event be the end of your running for the year: If you've found parkrun good fun - and we hope you have - do keep coming after you've achieved your goal. Just think what you'll be able to achieve next year if you keep running through the winter. The supportive atmosphere at a parkrun is really quite special, and will make up for the weather on those rare weeks when it's a bit pants :-)

Next week is likely to be a busy event, not least as it's just a week before the Glasgow half/10k, but we also have Nike along to allow our lady runners to talk to their product experts about supportive bras. I'm told it's something that many women don't necessarily think about, so come find out why it's important. Quite uniquely, you'll also be able to try out some of their products during the parkrun, so do come along. A changing tent will be available. Arrive early enough to take advantage of the trial.

Jaymie Mart is along from Lucozade too. Jaymie is the Scottish Ladies downhill mountain bike champion, as well as a sports nutrition/hydration expert. Jaymie's visit is about so much more than free samples, so if you've got questions about how to keep yourself hydrated and prepared for events, come along and talk to her.

This week the event went very smoothly. We had a superb turnout of 286 runners, ably supported by 20 super volunteers. Across Scotland we had our third biggest turnout at parkrun events so far, with 618 runners taking part. George Taylor was the first runner across the line with a new PB of 16:56, and he contributed to the spectacular news that a quarter of our field (77 of you), set a new PB today. Conditions were absolutely ideal for a good run, and we're glad so many of you capitalised on that. Our first Lady was Pam McKay (20:34) taking part in her first Glasgow parkrun.

There was a great turnout in the Burrell Cafe afterwards. Whilst the bacon rolls aren't on the menu any more (apparently they just weren't selling in large enough quantities), the scones are proving very popular, and have to say I rather enjoyed mine today. Everybody is welcome, so do come along, and pull up a chair and join any runners you see.

Just a reminder too that if you're away down south at all, that other parkruns start at 9am. We start at 9.30am in Scotland as it makes a big difference in the winter months, and also hooks into available facilities.

See you next week!

Regards,

Richard.

A superb return to form after our week off, and lots to report on!

Firstly, I hope everybody found something to fill in their non-Glasgow parkrun Saturday mornings? We saw a record turnout down at Strathclyde parkrun, so hope you enjoyed the welcome  there. The challenges the Strathclyde parkrun   course presents is a different sort to Pollok (not least how much of the home baking to try!), and we'd encourage everybody to give it a shot. It's a flat course, but a mental challenge with the longest finish straight in all of parkrun (as far as I'm aware). Do be grateful though that the core team in Glasgow don't inflict their home baking on you! If you're better at it than us, do feel free to bring some along if you fancy.

There were some super local events to choose from, and great to see some familiar faces. We love to encourage parkrunners to try other local events, and both local clubs Bella Harriers, and Bella Road Runners, had events to tempt. The Harriers 10k through Pollok Park was a super event, with a free BBQ afterwards too. The Road Runners 5k was excellent too, and their post-run spread really does take some beating. Great value for money in both cases. And if you're a regular parkrunner you'll recognise lots of faces from Saturday's along at these events. Do give them a shot: There really is so much to choose from, and they're so very friendy, and always cheaper and less crowded than many of the 'big' city organised events. See the Upcoming Local Events page on our News page for details.

This week, we resumed with a special moment. When we started the Glasgow parkrun I'd really looked forward to the moment we'd get our own 'home grown' 50 club members as a mark that Glasgow parkrun was 'established'. It seemed like a distant goal back in December 2008. So I was personally chuffed to bits to be able to present Ian Goudie and Al Maclachlan with their tops. They join Dan Maher as the three Scottish parkrunners with 50 t-shirts. It's also a big achievement on their parts - taking part in so many events (and all having helped from time to time) takes commitment, and they're all pretty handy runners. Ian Goudie setting an unexpected PB on the day too a superb achievement. We look very much forward to awarding plenty more 50 shirts in the months and years to come.

Don't forget we have the 10 club for our younger runners too. We think the parkrun clubs like this are a great way to encourage our younger runners away from the tempting sedentary options open to them. Read more about the parkrun clubs sponsored by Nike here: http://parkrun.com/about/parkrunclubs.aspx

But special moments weren't confined to Glasgow. Down south, the man who started parkrun, and has seen his idea grow beyond his wildest dreams, and is steering it so effectively forward, celebrated both his 50th birthday but also achieved his own 50 t-shirt. My good friend Sharon Rowe snapped a quite special picture (link) - So I'm sure I speak for everybody at Glasgow parkrun when wishing Paul a happy birthday, and congratulations on achieving his own 50 t-shirt, and wish him the very best. Special mention too to Chris Wright (aka Crispy, from the newsletter) also got his 100 shirt at last. Chris is the parkrun general manager, and responsible for the parkrun website which we hear so many good things about.

Finally, I'd like to mention one of the very best bits about being involved in parkrun - they're the special moments you often witness when helping out. After running myself, I popped back to the finish funnel to see how things were going (flawlessly, in a word - you'd all stayed in sequence and not ducked out!), and was greeted by a delighted Barbara Maclean, who'd just finished and was demanding hugs from everybody at having set a new PB. A big congratulations to Barbara, and I'm chuffed to bits that you were so delighted. It's why parkrun is so special, and so very rewarding. Keep up the good work!

A few reminders
  • Please don't go home with tokens. We lost FOUR yesterday, and it takes me a chunk of time to print off replacements, rethread the tokens. They're also expensive.
  • Please take your turn to help. We're looking short of volunteers next week (21st August). parkrun is a free, grass roots running event, and depends on everybody helping out from time to time. If everybody took there turn 2 or 3 times a year, we'd really have no problem, and wouldn't need to put out pleas like this.
  • 28th August is likely to be a big event. We have parkrun sponsor Lucozade Sport along with Jaymie Mart - Scottish Ladies downhill mountain bike champion no less - on hand, and also - for our ladies - parkrun sponsor Nike will be on-site with advice about running bras, and an aspect of running kit that is sometimes misunderstood - and important to get right. There'll be an option to try out one of the bras for the parkrun (there will be a changing tent on the day), which isn't something you normally get a chance to do. Should be a great event, so do plan to arrive in plenty of time as we expect it to be busy.
  • Regarding post-editing of results. Just so it's clear, in Glasgow we don't update results after the event unless there's been a technical problem. We want to be as fair as possible, and think the best way of doing that is to stick to the rule "no barcode, no result". Our core volunteers put in so much time to stage the event each week, and it was - when we were post-editing the results - sometimes taking several hours to deal with all the queries. So please take care of your barcode whilst running, ensure it's secure (or leave it in your car; Just don't go home with your token!). Remember, we're on every week, so if you forgot your barcode, come back next week!
  • Glasgow parkrun can only take place because of the superb support we receive from our sponsors: Sweatshop (based up in Anniesland - click for a map; Check out your registration email for a £15 voucher off a pair of shoes), Lucozade, Nike and the London Marathon Company. We try to keep the event non-commercial, but please do consider supporting our sponsors as a way of supporting our free weekly 5k.
