Glasgow parkrun - Report for event number 63 - 6th March 2010

Spring on the way!
No barcode, no time, no matter if you're first over the line or not.
Burrell Cafe
Parking!

After the longest winter in a century – or does it just seem that way? – last Saturday was mild and sunny, attracting 274 park runners to the Glasgow event, a huge increase on the previous week’s tally of 195. The ongoing thaw has not only made it more pleasant to go out running, it is also much safer now that there is no slippery ice. If the weather keeps up it will soon be time to dig out those sunglasses, your fake tan and, heaven forbid, dodgy lycra shorts.

First in was regular Robert Gilroy, but because he forgot his barcode his time doesn’t count – better luck next time, old chap. The good news is that his error means another park runner was able to claim the number one spot. Congratulations to Gordon Robertson, of Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers, whose time of 16 mins 30secs was a new personal best. More than 30 entrants managed to finish the course in under 20 minutes, a brilliant effort which made life at the finishing line much busier for those in charge of determining the order in which people came in.

It was great to see the number of volunteers exceeding the number of positions needing filled, but don’t let that put you off turning up next week. If everyone who takes part in the event volunteered just a few times a year there would be never be any shortages. Plus you get to feel smug the following Saturday, always a bonus in our book. Why not take a step towards helping by signing up to our volunteer reminder list – just email GlasgowHelpers@parkrun.com. As the season gets busier, with people training for their 10k races, half marathons and marathons by undertaking the 5k run round Pollok Park, more and more volunteers will be required to coordinate the event.

On a personal note, one of my favourite bits of the park run is the coffee and cake afterwards at the Burrell Collection. If you have never been along, join us after the next event. I highly recommend the fruit scone, washed down with a latte. The calories don’t count when you’ve just sweated your way around the course.

Results

In his 2nd appearance, Gordon ROBERTSON (SM30-34) of Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers won for the 1st time in a time of 16:30. Ethan SLOAN-DENNISON (JM15-19) representing Victoria Park City Of Glasgow AC took second by 3 seconds recording 16:33. Andy CAMPBELL, (SM35-39) of Bellahouston Harriers placed third in a time of 16:48.

In her 7th appearance, Claire MCCRACKEN (VW35-39) of Victoria Park City Of Glasgow AC won in a time of 18:44 for the 3rd time. Claire MCCRACKEN beat Lisa MOODY (SW30-34) representing Unattached by 69 seconds recording 19:53 in the process. Linzi COWAN, (JW15-19) of Giffnock North AAC placed third in a time of 20:19.

Sophie Mary PARCELL leads Jeanette WHITESIDE by 77 in the ladies competition. Last week there were 45 first timers and 93 runners recorded PBs, bringing the total number since the Glasgow started to 3021. In this time, 2795 runners from 115 different clubs have completed the race 10092 times covering a distance of 50460 kilometers.

The male course record is held by Ross TOOLE who ran 15:01 on 12/12/09, event #51. The female equivalent is held by Lindsay MACNEILL who ran 17:46 on 03/01/09, event #5.

Cheers,

Charlene

Thanks Charlene for the report! Just one addendum:

Parking

We observed some pretty poor parking on Saturday. The area to the right as you enter the extended carpark is, technically, for coaches, not cars. This also seems to be where a large number of late arrivals park. PLEASE give serious consideration to parking OUTSIDE the park, and jogging in. See our tip sheet for more details. You may even find you get to the event quicker. Remember we won't hold our event up just for you if we're ready to start. Also, please don't forget the Burrell car park is £1 from 10am.

Lastly, we hope to have some news very soon about more parkruns in Scotland. Remember, get in touch if you'd like a parkrun in your area. Chances are there are already a few folk, and if we can put you in touch you might have a parkrun in your local park before you know it!

Regards,

Richard.

February Sweatshop prize winner announced for Glasgow parkrun

We are pleased to announce that February's Sweatshop monthly prize winner is Ross Goodman

February's Sweatshop monthly prize winner for Glasgow is Ross Goodman.

Ross Goodman has been a regular at Glasgow parkrun since the beginning of the year, including our cross-country events when Ross discovered he could run faster in ankle deep ice water compared to ankle deep snow! He's brought his time down, on the normal course, from 38:00 to 33:49, so we're sure Ross is eyeing up a sub-30 minute run before too long! Ross's previous results, including his snowy debut on 9th Jan (in 42:19) are on his athlete results page.

Ross is building up to run the Edinburgh Marathon in May, during which he hopes to raise money in memory of his daughter Emma, who sadly passed away from Motor Neuron Disease in 2008. Emma loved to visit the childrens hospice, Rachel House, so Ross is hoping to raise money for the Childrens Hospice organisation CHAS. More details on Ross's justgiving page: http://www.justgiving.com/26Miles4CHAS, and you can follow his fundraising efforts on his blog: http://www.rossgoodman.com/category/fundraising/ - Ross is also on Twitter @rossgoodman

We're delighted to recognise Ross's efforts, contribution and support, as well as some excellent running achievements. We'd also like to thank Hugh Brasher of Sweatshop for his generosity. Ross's prize is a new pair of running shoes fitted at Glasgow Sweatshop. Sweatshop are one of the key sponsors that help parkrun continue, so we hope runners bear them in mind when they're next buying running gear.

The winner is chosen by the event directors or members of the committee designated by them. The successful candidates are often chosen for their perseverance, number of PBs in one month, total number of runs and improvement overall. However, we can award the prize for other reasons at our discretion. If you know someone who has overcome adversity, personal illness or is deserving in any other way, please let us know by emailing glasgowoffice@parkrun.com and we promise to consider your nomination.

Glasgow parkrun - Report for event 62 - 27th February 2010

Cold weather doesn't deter 195 runners
Toni remembers her barcode!
Glasgow Running Network Competition winner announced
Remember to say thanks to our volunteers!

Well the weather was a bit of an odd one towards the end of this week - We had a blanket of snow in the Pollok Park area, but it had largely gone by Friday afternoon, and no more fell. But we understand snow was falling far more outside of Glasgow - and certainly a number of cars gave testament to that with coverings of snow on their roofs! So we think our slight drop in numbers perhaps suggested many runners took one look outside on Saturday morning, and thought better of leaving the comfort of their beds.

But for the 195 of you who did come, a great event was had. We're chuffed to see Jethro Lennox win the event for the second time in four appearances, and we're delight Toni McIntosh finally remembered her barcode to record first lady!

There was only a tiny bit of ice out on the course which we did treat, and - as ever - caution you all to make sure you're comfortable yourself with the conditions before setting off. It's no big thing if you'd rather not take part: We are on every week after all!

There was also a popular race - rescheduled from January - was taking place in North Glasgow (Sprinburn Harriers Jack Crawford 10k), which myself, Alan and many of our volunteers this week were planning to run. We saw plenty of parkunners along there at the event, so we hope you all enjoyed yourselves, despite the inclement weather around midday and tricky underfoot conditions.

Many of our frontrunners were either running at this, or another, race, or just taking it easy after last weeks national XC. Plus we're starting to see club runners building up to the London Marathon, favouring mileage over our shorter distance event. Why not include the parkrun in that? Finish your long run with a timed 5k to get an idea of your pace in a crowd? Then reward yourself with coffee and cake :-)

Competition

We had a draw to win a place on the Glasgow Running Network's 10k refresher course. Delighted to say we drew names out of a hat in the Burrell cafe after the run, and Carlos González García was the lucky winner. We're hoping Carlos enjoys the course and feels the benefit as he works towards his 10k. There are lots to choose from, see the forthcoming races on our Links page. The Men's Health 10k, and the Ladies 10k are both very popular events, both include a section of our course (the ladies in the opposite direction), but familiarity with the park is sure to help!

Say thanks to our volunteers!

parkrun takes place every week because so many volunteers offer their help. Why not take a step towards helping by signing up to our volunteer reminder list - Just email GlasgowHelpers@parkrun.com

If you're running, remember to take time to thank our wonderful volunteers. It makes a big difference to hear your support for them, particularly when it's a bit chilly. Helping out yourself just a few times a year is all we suggest, so please get involved to help sustain Glasgow parkrun.

Support our sponsors

parkrun is growing all the time, and we hope to be able to add more parkrun pins to the map of Scotland before very long. But after the enthusiasts who come forward to start a parkrun, there's equipment and support that's needed too, and that can only happen thanks to our wonderful sponsors, so please give thought to supporting them when you next purchase: Find out more about Sweatshop, Lucozade, Nike and The London Marathon at http://www.parkrun.com/sponsors/overview.aspx

Reminders
  • The toilet facilities in the park are down by the Old Stable Courtyard (in the alleyway to the side of the horse stables). The Burrell facilities open at 10am. When I run I like to include a visit to the stable courtyard in my warmup routine. Allow about 15-20 minutes.
  • Please don't leave with tokens! Two runners headed off with tokens again yesterday, and we're still missing four others. If you do not want a time, please just drop your token in the no barcode tub, or hand them to a volunteer. If you have inadvertently left with one, please hand it in. It's a fiddle to replace them and they're not as good as the originals.
  • Remember your athlete/personal barcode doesn't need to be presented until you are back in the Burrell Carpark.
  • We depend on volunteers coming forward every week. Of those volunteers who do, many are regulars, and we'd like to give them a chance to run more often. If you're a regular participant just helping a few times a year is all we ask. Could you really take a parkrun '50 club' t-shirt if you'd not helped out even once?
  • If you have helped, please spread the word and encourage others to get involved in helping. We know it can seem a bit intimidating, but all of our tasks are straight forward and we provide all the training you need.
Stat attack

In his 4th appearance, Jethro LENNOX (SM30-34) of Shettleston Harriers won for the 2nd time in a time of 16:19. Martin FISHWICK (JM15-19) representing Giffnock North AAC took second by 18 seconds recording 16:37. Ethan SLOAN-DENNISON, (JM15-19) of Victoria Park City Of Glasgow AC placed third in a time of 18:04.

In her 7th appearance, Toni MCINTOSH (SW30-34) of Ayr Seaforth AAC won in a time of 19:14 for the 5th time. Toni MCINTOSH beat Kathryn SCOTT (VW45-49) representing Clydesdale Harriers by 122 seconds recording 21:16 in the process. Morgan (Katherine) JAMIESON, (JW14) of Unattached placed third in a time of 21:46.

In today's Age Graded competition, Martin FISHWICK recorded a performance of 81.24%. In the points competition Alastair John MACLACHLAN has a lead of 47 points over second placed John GILHOOLY. Jeanette WHITESIDE leads Sophie Mary PARCELL by 23 in the ladies competition. This week there were 30 first timers.

Richard

Glasgow parkrun - Report for event number 61 - 20th February 2010

257 runners take part, with Scottish National Cross Country the main event for club runners
Charity runners supporting Make a Wish foundation
First across the line makes special tribute
Parking/Toilet Facilities reminders
Last call for competition entries

It was a cold, frosty and emotional morning at Pollok Park on Saturday, February 20 as an amazing 257 runners assembled for Glasgow parkrun 61.  Although a number of big guns gave the weekly 5k time trial a miss to participate in the Scottish National Cross Country Championships in the afternoon or the Kirkintilloch 12.5k race on Sunday, the ranks were swelled by an influx of charity runners and walkers raising cash for the children’s Make a Wish Foundation, who raised over £1000

Making his sixth appearance, Stuart MacDougall (SM25-29) sprinted off at five minute mile pace to take an early lead.   However he was overtaken in the first lap by the chasing pack of Ross Bark (25), James Breen (44) and Al MacLachlan (50) and that’s the way it was to remain as the Stranraer athlete raced to a convincing result, raising his arms skywards as he crossed the line in 17:47.  Hamilton’s Breen just managed to hold off a strong challenge from Bellahouston Road Runner MacLachlan to claim runner-up spot in 18:29, one second ahead of the super veteran.

In the women’s event the first prize went to Denise Muir (40) who crossed the line in 21:48, 75 seconds more than it took her to run the much flatter Edinburgh parkrun the week previous.   The Portobello runner beat Solihul  and Small Heath’s Samantha Barrett (38) by 46 seconds.  First time parkrunner, Maureen McGarvey (F40-44) placed third with a time of 22:38.

Dedication

Immediately after crossing the line, an emotional Ross Bark explained that he had made the 170 mile return journey with his wife and daughter to take part in the run to help him cope with the loss of his mother in law Mariel who had sadly recently passed away.  He had therefore raised both hands as a celebration and pointed to the sky in memory of his mother in-law who he dedicated his result to.

WAVA

In this week’s Age Graded competition, Irvine’s 58 year old Jim White scored 81.69% with a time of 19:18.

Points Table

Al MacLachlan’s fine performance keeps him at the top of the Men’s Points Table with a total of 905, 114 points ahead of second placed John Gilhooly, with Ian Goudie of Kilmarnock Harriers third on 688.

Jeanette Whiteside sits at the top of the Women’s Points Table on 770, 116 points ahead of Sophie Mary Parcell, with Bellahouston Harrier Erica Christie in third spot on 578.

Many thanks to Ian Goudie for the write-up. Ian was taking part in the National Cross Country himself, but came along to watch proceedings and lend some support. Many thanks!

A couple of minors...

Social networks

We post regular updates and news items on twitter and facebook. You don't need an account to view the updates, but they'll come in to your feeds if you do. Follow us on twitter: @glasgowparkrun, or become a fan on facebook at facebook.com/glasgowparkrun

Parking/Toilet facilities

We'd remind our participants that the Burrell carpark is charged at £1 from 10am. You can park for free outside of Pollok Park - Shawmoss Road is ideal - and jog in. Particularly useful if you're running late. Wherever you park, please park considerately and adhere to speed limits (15mph inside Pollok). There are also toilet facilities open in the Old Stable Courtyard, from first-light, and can easily be worked in to your warmup. See our Reference pages on facebook (no account required to view) for details and maps. We have an information board in the start area which has the toilet map on.

Competition

To help you on your way, we're delighted to be able to offer a free place on the Glasgow Running Network's 10k refresher course. E-mail GlasgowOffice@parkrun.com with a subject of "Competition entry" if you'd like to be entered into our draw. Details on what's involved here: http://www.runglasgow.org/GRN/training-for-races.php - Entries close after the parkrun on 27th February - We'll do the draw in the Burrell cafe after the event. The course starts in early March, and take place at five locations.

Local Races

There are always local club organised events going on in the area, and we'd encourage our runners to take part in these to test themselves at different distances, and over different courses. See the Glasgow parkrun Links page for upcoming local events, and get in touch if you'd like to promote your event or club.

Thanks again to Ian Goudie for the report.

Regards,

Richard.

Glasgow parkrun - Report for event 60 - 13th February 2010

ANOTHER attendance record!?
Actually contains a race report this week!
A second parkrun in the west of Scotland is developing
Lucozade visit proves popular

This week was the third record attendance (286 runners) in three weeks, and it's really very exciting to see so many people - including 58 first timers - adopting parkrun in Glasgow so enthusiastically.

It's also clear that Scotland is getting behind parkrun in a big way. Edinburgh parkrun also had a record turnout of 220 this week, which means a whopping 506 runners were taking part in parkruns in Scotland, part of what looks set to be another record turnout - approaching 4,000 runners - at parkrun events across the UK.

So much for the proposed boycott (see parkrun's response here). If you disagree with the sentiment expressed, as well as taking part in parkruns, please also give some thought to joining a local running club or group, and taking part in races and events to see how you do over different distances. It really is a great way to take your running further, no matter where you are in the speed spectrum. We feel very strongly that parkrun is a compliment to all the other events and groups that exist for runners.

Hopefully parkrun also helps show that club runners are friendly folk who are keen to encourage others into their sport. So if in doubt, give it a go! We've got a good list of supportive clubs on our Links page, as well as details about forthcoming local races.

We're also very pleased to say an enthusiast has come forward is is making some excellent - and rapid - progress with a 2nd parkrun in the west of Scotland. Please drop us a note at GlasgowOffice@parkrun.com if you'd like to get involved in a parkrun in the North Lanarkshire area. We're particularly keen to hear from anybody who may work for North Lanarkshire council, as the organising team that's formed to start this new parkrun, works through the last few matters.

Running

Last week's race report was a bit light on actual race reporting. Well this week I'm pleased to say I was able to run myself (my 5th Glasgow parkrun). This was only possible because we had enough volunteers coming forward that I could do so. There was a close race between first placed Scott Hawkins (Kilbarchan AAC), over second placed Kenneth McCoy (Shettleston Harriers). Scott finished in 16:19 with Kenneth just 10 seconds behind. The ladies race was also very close with Claire McCracken (Victoria Park City Of Glasgow AC) winning in a time of 18:52, just 20 seconds ahead of Avril MASON (Shettleston Harriers).

A whopping 91 of you recorded Personal Bests today in what were, I think, ideal running conditions. No PB for me, sadly. I was taking part in my 5th Glasgow parkrun (and only my 11th ever parkrun). I did have a great time, helped by the fact that the two people who introduced me to parkrun - and therefore led to Glasgow parkrun starting - were visiting for the first time. David and Sharon Rowe were the first 100 club runners to visit our event I think. They're big supporters of parkrun, help at Bushy parkrun and behind the scenes at parkrun HQ, and are close friends, so hope they enjoyed the event they helped inspire. It was marvellous so many of you were there to mark a special occassion for me, and set so many PB's in the process! :-)

Keep moving in the funnel!

Last week we asked you all to always take a token regardless of whether you have an athletes barcode or not, and you seem to have responded well to that plea. However, we'd also remind you it's VERY important to always keep moving through the funnel until you have your token. Please don't stop and chat! Others may be right behind you, and stopping breaks the flow and risks interfering with others getting accurate times.

If you find you're feeling unwell after completing the course, please also think about adjusting your pace a little. We're particularly keen that our younger runners (and their parents) to bear this in mind. Smiling faces is what we like to see in the finish area, not, er, your breakfast...

Lucozade

We hope you enjoyed the visit from Lucozade, and benefited from Jaymie's knowledge and experience, and large supply of free samples. Remember you get a whopping 20% discount off Lucozade products. For more see the Lucozade page at parkrun.com.

Course measurement

On one of the discussion threads that resulted from this weeks controversy, there were some comments made about the certification of our course. I'm pleased to say that regular parkrunner Campbell Joss is a certified Scottish Athletics Course measurer, and he measured the Glasgow course back in January 2008 with a Jones counter, and has recently given me  documentation to that effect. I'd be delighted to show that to anybody who wishes to see it, and we'll be updating our website to reflect that shortly.

In defence of our times, I'm always delighted that we get some truly spectacular times on our course, but it's  because we seem to be attracting some top local talent, non more so than last weeks winner, Jethro Lennox, who was no less than the 2008 world long-distance mountain running champion. Our course record holder is Ross Toole, who's an athlete to watch, and has already won a number of junior track events: his record speaks for itself.

So when you're lining up at the start,  you're rubbing shoulders with some top talent. But the best thing of all for me is the huge enthusiasm for parkrun and running right across the field. I get so much from seeing every one of you succeeding in taking on and beating your own targets and goals. As much as Jethro's win was fantastic last week, I think Ross Goodman (@RossGoodman) is just as good taking a whopping 7 minutes and 7 seconds off his first Glasgow parkrun time. That's the real magic of parkrun.

Technical hiccups

We did have a slight technical problem with the timer, but we're pleased to say we were able to recover matters thanks to race director's Alan and Gillian's excellent efforts and quick thinking, and everything checks out from spot checks we ran against runners own times.

Stat Attack

In the gents race, in his 4th appearance, Scott HAWKINS (JM15-19) of Kilbarchan AAC won for the 1st time in a time of 16:19. Kenneth MCCOY (SM30-34) representing Shettleston Harriers took second by 10 seconds recording 16:29. Andy CAMPBELL, (SM35-39) of Bellahouston Harriers placed third in a time of 16:59.

In the ladies race, in her 6th appearance, Claire MCCRACKEN (VW35-39) of Victoria Park City Of Glasgow AC won in a time of 18:52 for the 2nd time. Claire MCCRACKEN beat Avril MASON (VW35-39) representing Shettleston Harriers by 20 seconds recording 19:12 in the process. Mairi STANLEY, (VW40-44) of Garscube Harriers placed third in a time of 19:38.

In today's Age Graded competition, Phil RUSSELL recorded a performance of 83.29%
In the points competition Alastair John MACLACHLAN has a lead of 79 points over second placed John GILHOOLY. Jeanette WHITESIDE leads Sophie Mary PARCELL by 33 in the ladies competition.

This week there were 58 first timers. 91 runners recorded PBs, bringing the total number since the Glasgow started to 2820. In this time, 2665 runners from 115 different clubs have completed the race 9366 times covering a distance of 46830 kilometers.

Thanks again for your support, and I hope to have some more news on growing parkrun in the area before too long.

Remember, drop us a note if you'd like to be added to our volunteer mailing list, and if you're running why not thank the real heroes of parkrun, the volunteers!

Regards,

Richard
