Volunteering appeal – May 2013

Dear Glasgow Volunteers,

I hope this reaches you well, and that you're enjoying the better weather after what feels like a long winter. Lots of local races and events going on to keep you motivated I hope. Remember we've also got a brand new parkrun in Glasgow in Tollcross park: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/tollcross

It's been a little while since we've sent out a volunteer appeal, so even though we've only a few slots left for this week, our roster in early June has plenty of slots free. You can see the available slots on our website at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/glasgow/futureroster if you fancy popping your name down. The Tollcross team are also in need of volunteers, their roster is at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/tollcross/futureroster

Another way you can help is to encourage parkrunners you might know to have a first go at helping. We're conscious that sometimes volunteering seems a bit intimidating, so please feel free to share your experiences hopefully to the contrary!

If you fancy doing that on social media we're on twitter @glasgowparkrun (http://twitter.com/glasgowparkrun) and facebook http://facebook.com/glasgowparkrun - or just have a chat to folk in the start area or registration queue next time you're along?

One other thing: Last year some of you might remember we tried to 'give something back' to Pollok park, but working with the park rangers on tackling the invasive Himalayan Balsam in the woods adjacent to our course. We're hoping to repeat the exercise this year, so please stay tuned to our news page and social media pages for more details. It will only require 20-30 minutes of your time after your run, and is very therapeutic!

Enjoy the rest of your week, and hope to see you along soon,

Thanks and regards,

Richard Leyton

parkrun club T-shirt May delivery

parkrun's sponsor Adidas supports the parkrun clubs: http://www.parkrun.com/about/parkrunclubs - and to recognise the achievements of runners achieving these milestones, offers a gift of a T-shirt to those runners.

Christiane brings along the T-shirts to give out and will be bringing them along this Saturday (18th May). Please speak to Christiane preferably before the event, to collect your T-shirt. As of 16th May we have T-shirts for the individuals listed below.

If you were hoping to receive a T-shirt, and aren't on the list (and definitely followed the instructions in your club notification email and clicked the link to 'visit your profile page' and followed the onscreen instructions), please bear with us as Ray and Anne have over a hundred events to send deliveries to now.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks too to our sponsors Adidas.

Parkrun report 11th May 2013

REPORT for event 221 11/05/2013

It’s not often we run in the rain – one person commented that it was his first time in no less than 34 Glasgow parkruns – but it happened on Saturday. It’s not often too that we still have daffodils and cherry blossom out in mid May along with the bluebells & rhododendrons which have suddenly appeared following the 2 warm days during the week. Numbers, just 319, were also considerable down after the 440+ of the preceding 3 weeks. This however was mainly due to other events - a 10k in the park due at 11:00 a.m. and especially to the Glasgow Women’s 10k scheduled for the following day - rather than the unlikely possibility of Glasgow runners staying in bed on a cool, blustery & wet morning!
Conditions didn’t stop some excellent performances with 7 recording age graded performances of >80%. The two outstanding ones were from the first two females to finish. 14 year old Holly Still (Giffnock North AAC) was 3 secs. off her p.b. with a time of 18:32 finishing in 9th. place overall. Susan Burns (VW 55-59) of Clayton- le-Moors Harriers, Lancs. recorded 19:49 giving her an age graded 90.16%. Susan is still the only one out of 8,889 runners to have bettered 90% which she has done on 3 occasions. A further 4 have achieved over 89% on our undulating course.
Jack Arnold (Crossfit Glasgow) was well ahead after the first lap and further increased his lead to finish in a new p.b. of 16:47 & a first win in 15 runs. There were a number of bedraggled finishers (some still smiling, but not all) with the wet weather and also a number of soggy paper bar codes for the recorders to try and scan! It does help considerably if these can ALL be laminated.
Congratulations to Richard Hodelet, Allan McLeod & Doug Kerr on qualifying for their red 50 T shirts and to June Reid on completing her 100th. parkrun. There are now a number of park runners who having started about 4 years ago are now around the 100 mark.
Many thanks are due to all the volunteers who turned out in the rain (& smiling) to ensure another great event. A new volunteering role could be, “Official umbrella holder for the timekeeper”. But there again, it’s a bit of a mouthful and if it’s another 34 events until it rains again - - - - - - - here’s hoping!

Ian Macdonald.

Glasgow parkrun Event number 220 4May 2013

Great morning for a run in the park" presumably thought by the 443 athletes who appeared for the sunny parkrun, especially after the awful weather on Friday. I think some of us thought that with the new parkrun starting at Tollcross numbers would be down a bit. No chance! Maybe it was because of this weekend’s Women’s 10K taking in part of the course. Who knows?

The first timer’s briefing was pretty packed, the most I’ve seen for a long time. We even got to the stage of stopping cars entering the large car park. Please arrive early if you’re driving in, there is much more chance of getting a space. Or come even earlier and park outside and have a warm up run in.

The run started well as normal, although I’ve heard we had a faller early on. I hope he was OK. I was the marshal stationed at the beginning of the ‘S’ bends catching athletes coming up from ‘the glade’. The front runners seemed to be going at a good pace and even on lap2, the eventual winner was in good shape, who-ever you were. The runners behind seemed to be in a good mood, waving and smiling for the camera (if you can do that, you’re not trying hard enough) Saw several athletes with their MHFS tops on, obviously in training for June. See you there!

Congratulations to all the first timers for getting up and out for a run. We hope to see you all again soon.

Well done also to all the athletes who posted a new PB. That shows that you’re putting the effort into what you are doing. It’s been too long since I had a PB ...one day though.

And the volunteers ..... what can I say? Sterling effort! If it wasn’t for the volunteers parkrun could not operate.
PLEASE consider a wee stint wearing the Day-Glo vest. You won’t regret it!

Christopher Quinn

Tollcross parkrun starts 4th May

As we mentioned in Saturday's pre-run briefing Tollcross parkrun starts on the 4th May.

So that the Tollcross team can get up to speed, we'd request you don't all rush along this Saturday. This will allow the team to establish itself and get used to the system.

Unfortunately we weren't able to secure local funding support for this event, so Tollcross parkrun has been funded by the parkrun New Events fund. If you'd like to contribute to help support other events get started, please see the parkrun UK About us page.
