Volunteers Galore ahead of Sheffield 10k and Boundary Relay

Event #326

Photo 22-09-2018, 09 01 56

Jo welcomed everyone to Graves this morning, although she was slightly thrown as she had left her notes behind and attempted to recall everything from memory. We had a slightly quiet week, but with plenty of volunteers, possibly due to the Sheffield 10k and Sheffield Boundary Relay/Ultra in the race calendar for the next day.

A big thank you to this week's volunteers… Terry ARMSTRONG, Peter ATKIN, Elaine BIRD, Evie BROOM, Lucy BROOM, Noah BROOM, Charley BURNEY, Paul CHAPMAN, Janet CHAPMAN, Lucy COWELL, Stephen John DAY, Jo ECCLES, Rosemary FERRILL, Lynn FINDLAY, Stephen GILMER, Everything's Run GREEN, Graham HOGG, Jon HOWSON, Mark JACKSON, Kat JONES, Charlie LAST, Andy LEDBETTER, Jill MARSTON-GIROUX, Liz NICHOLAS, Robert NICOL, Helen SMITH and Carol SPEIGHT

A note from RD Gav…

Trial Run time! *Tuesday 18:10*

Do you fancy getting a sneak peek at what could become the new Graves parkrun course?

I'm looking for people to come and run the route at their own pace, but all setting off at once. It'll be this Tuesday, 25th September setting off from near the cafe at 18:10.

I'll provide more details on the exact route ahead of time; it'll still be 2 laps, but starting in the opposite direction, going anti clockwise from the green dot on the pic. Shorter lap first, then round the lakes on the second lap only. Other highlights include:

More hills per lap

Views of the church and Norton Hall

The North face of Killer hill!

Less narrow paths near the start

Less grassy hills

Why are we thinking of changing the course? Well we've had a number of problems on the narrow black path near the start. It was OK when it was wider, and had 60 runners heading for it, but with 250+ it can be a bit congested. Additionally the permanent detour up the grass is likely to get a bit troublesome underfoot over winter.

So, why not join me for a run around on Tuesday evening,

Gav

Back to school and a new record!

Event 323

A total of 234 runners and walkers came together to listen to Roger's briefing on this sunny September day. Yesterday may have been the end of meteorological summer but the sun continued to shine strongly on everyone at Graves this morning and the slightly cooler start to the day meant conditions were a little bit more comfortable than at some runs over the last month or two.

20180901_085817-500x281

Roger thanked the volunteers who keep the parkrun going; this week they were: Paul HIGGINBOTTOM • Roger WALTERS • Janet GLOVER • Marie HIPPEY • Graham NIELD • Terry ARMSTRONG • Helen YOUNG • Andes GEIGER • Jo ECCLES • Simon NIGHTINGALE • Becci TAYLOR • Charlie LAST • Ben AGAR • Robert CASSY • Jill MARSTON-GIROUX • Emma BARKER • Laura WHITE • Michael JONES • Gillian RAY • Robert NICOL • Ruth HOFFMAN

20180901_085530-500x281

Schools will be going back this week and children may be regretting the end of the holidays so it is nice that we've got parkrun to look forward to throughout the autumn.

20180901_090213-500x281

As always folks of all ages took part, and one participant, Kara Cooper (aged 4) completed her 8th parkrun today! She was spotted by marshals still going strong even towards the end of the course and trotting along happily with her family. What an impressive performance from Kara.

20180901_091510-500x281

The dry conditions underfoot together with the cool sunshine (and perhaps a long summer of good running?) led to a new COURSE RECORD! Congratulations to Joseph for the great time of 16:19, and on his 50th parkrun too!

Event #320

Another glorious morning in Graves park this weekend and we had 226 lovely people to join us for parkrun. The fayre was gone so we were back to ‘normal’, doggy detour that is! I know lots of people who missed the run up the big grassy hill! Everything was going so well…!

Sam was RD this week, complete with his limelight stealing son! Sam went through all the usual notices but also added in about the bulk of the volunteers this week. 14 of the volunteers were from the Sheffield GoodGym. If you haven’t heard of GoodGym, they are a charity who are official partners of parkrun and they combine running, fitness and good deeds! There are a wide range of Good Deeds for the community from: gardening, painting, helping in food / clothes banks or visiting lonely older people to help keep them part of the community. Sheffield’s GoodGym crew meet at 6:30 every Monday outside the Showroom Cinema in town. For more details visit: https://www.goodgym.org/areas/sheffield

We also introduced a First Timer Briefing this week for the first time. This was done by Graves regular Stephen Gilmer. We are hoping this will be a new volunteer slot each week so if you’re a regular who would like to give a little something back, please let us know. We’d love for you to have a go at the first timer briefing!

And finally…

The core team here at Graves would like to thank everyone for their understanding this weekend where we had some technical issues with the timers and scanners. Stephen Gilmer and Jo Eccles worked tirelessly over the weekend to try and sort out the issues and ‘find’ the correct results. I have no idea where you would even start!! But they managed it! The results that are now uploaded should be accurate. This is where volunteering comes into its own. Neither of them had to pursue the results hence why the parkrun option is a 59:59 timer for all however, they both knew how much you parkrunners would appreciate it. Many, many thanks from us all. What a TEAM!

Milestone Story:

So you may think what a coincidence that myself and Cat reached 100 on the same day! I’ll have you know this took precision planning once we realised we were close, we worked out dates to coincide with a birthday weekend too – Happy Birthday Cat. If you read last week’s report you’ll have read about Claire and Jayne. Not to bore you again but my story is similar. I’d run parkrun a couple of times but gave up and then in Oct 2014 I came back and fell in love with running. I’ve now run 100 runs, 94 of them at Graves. I went to Gav’s unofficial hill and speed sessions one Tuesday night some 2/3 years ago where I met Catherine for the first time. We discovered we had similar pace and got chatting that night (when we could breathe!) and agreed we’d be back the following week. We started running together at parkrun on Saturdays and then started to run outside of that. We matched each other quite well and often manage to motivate one another at different points, spurring each other on. We have decided we both love winter training and can often be found in rain, wind and snow running around Sheffield. 3 and a bit years down the line we are now firm friends, have run lots of races together and have even ventured out in ‘normal’ clothes for several evenings out. We have both made so many friends through parkrun and the Striders and I just want to thank everyone at Parkrun for being so great. Graves is definitely the best.

Parkrun, It’s not just about the run, it’s about building friendships!

Event #315

IMG_3152

Jo welcomed everyone to another beautiful but very warm parkrun. She encouraged everyone to give all the volunteers a rapturous round of applause. She encouraged anyone who hadn’t volunteered to ‘give it a go’ reassuring them they would find it a fulfilling experience.

We welcomed tourists visiting us including from Carlisle and Durban, South Africa!

Not many milestones today although I hear on the grapevine there may be some next week. A special mention to Leo Duncan for doing their 10th junior parkrun and David Sheppard for his 200th run.

Special belated thanks to Paul MILLEN for sorting out the printed barcode stickers. Extra special thanks from all of those who token sort from time to time, you have helped make our lives much easier!!!

Claire and Jayne have kindly offered to share their experience of how parkrun has impacted on their life. They came to parkrun as non-runners or knowing each other. Claire said she didn’t even start running until she was 45 years old. They came to find themselves pacing each other each week which led to them chatting to each other and becoming friends. They both expressed how parkrun had added to their lives being good for their health and emotional wellbeing. Their friendship has gone from strength to strength. They train together outside of parkrun and are planning on embarking on a 10km. For Claire and Jayne its much than about running its about their friendship. They now socialise outside of parkrun, enjoying gin afternoons (in moderation!) and afternoon teas. Jayne’s family and friends have become involved in parkrun too! Thank you so much for sharing your story ladies. I think it’s so important for people to realise how life enriching parkrun is.  It was great to hear your story and its obvious to see the happiness your friendship has bought you.

A big welcome to our international visitor today Sonia Robertson. She usually takes part in parkruns in South Africa with her twin sister. She did her 49th parkrun today and is looking forward to doing her 50th with her twin sister. Well done Sonia, we hope you enjoyed the Graves parkrun hospitality.

There were 30 first timers this week, 12 of these were doing their first ever parkrun. Well done to you all.

Roger was at the helm this week and keen to get going on time. Briefing began at 8:55 with the usual safety notices involving children, dogs and not having exclusive use of the park. There was then a big round of applause for our hi-vis heroes this week:

Robert ATKIN, Jemma BABIKER, Magdalena BOO, Lauren BROWN, Charley BURNEY, Sharon COURT, Jo ECCLES, Paul GILL, Peter HENSHAW, Jon HOWSON, Kat JONES, Alison KANE, Catherine NEEDHAM, Gavin NEWHOUSE, Robert NICOL, Stuart ROOKER, Sarah SANDERSON, Amelia SANDERSON, Carol SPEIGHT, Marc VESTEY, Roger WALTERS, Sue WILSON

Roger then went on to encourage those who haven’t yet volunteered at parkrun to give it a try. Roger (as many others do) sees volunteering not as giving up something at all but experiencing parkrun in a different light and giving something back. Please do consider getting involved.

Roger also received a round of applause because he successfully completed a self-set challenge this week. A year ago Roger was knocked off his bike and as well as considerable pain, had to undergo a long period of recovery. On Wednesday this week he completed the equivalent of a half ironman triathlon sandwiched between two spin classes. He did this to raise money for a charity called Developing Physio who teach physiotherapy skills to low income / developing communities. If you would like to contribute to this cause on behalf of Roger, the link is here:

Milestones:

We had a nice selection of Milestones this morning. Congratulations to Edward HATFIELD and Ally BOOKER on their Junior 10th runs; Gillian BROWN, Alexander ROBINSON and Barry JACKSON on their 50th runs and lastly congratulations to Paul GILL who managed to complete his 100th run and his 50th volunteer! Fantastic achievement Paul and thank you from all at parkrun. Thanks also for the tiffin!

Everybody: Doggy Detour!

Event #308

After a chilly start to the morning, 256 people gathered in Graves park as the sun began to shine and layers were quickly shed. A beautiful morning for a run or a walk and well done to all that did!

There were 26 first timers this week, 12 of these were doing their first ever parkrun. Well done to you all.

Gav was RD this week. He was a little late to arrive as he had to collect the kit bag from a poorly Jo (get well soon!) So late in fact, that a couple of the volunteers were wondering if they needed a plan B… they just didn’t know what that would be! In the nick of time, Gav arrived and all was right in the world!

A big thank you to our hi-vis heroes this week:

There were the usual safety notices this week but additionally to those, there was the news that we can no longer run through the farm this summer. The path through the farm had been closed all week so Gav came ready with cones to mark out the doggy detour for all to follow.

Milestones:

There was an awful lot of tumbleweed around this morning when Gav asked for milestone runs however the results show that Ivan CONIN celebrated his 100th run this morning. Well done!

An extra milestone fact this week is that last week Graves parkrun topped 50,000 runs. Thanks to Andy LEDBETTER for this factoid!

Graves Parkrun bathes in Bank Holiday sunshine

Event #307

Jo welcomed us all to a lovely, sunny Graves parkrun. We had a few first timers and tourists who sampled the delights of Graves park views and cute little lambs and calves in the fields.

Everyone gave the parkrun volunteers a big round of applause. Jo received a special request from a little girl called Coralie who asked Jo if she could be a ‘Martian’. Jo duly handed her the next best thing - a high viz jacket. You made Jo’s day Coralie! It great to see so many children marshalling with their parents hopefully they too will become parkrunners when they are old enough! Don’t forget we have a 2k junior parkrun on Sundays at Graves park for 4 to 14 year olds - http://www.parkrun.org.uk/events/juniorevents/.

We had a keen dog joining us today who responded with a bark everytime Jo asked a question relating to dogs! Please remember the doggy detour is still in action.

For the milestone shout outs we had a couple of people celebrating their 200th parkrun. It took Brian Adams 4 and a half years to achieve his and Terry said his took forever. Terry still has a passion for parkrun and often volunteers and in the true spirit of parkrun ran back to encourage me to put a sprint in over the last few hundred metres.

Jo introduced Dr Oliver Hart (Graves parkrun founder) to us all. Oliver wanted to make us all aware that parkrun was linking in with the NHS to celebrate the NHS 70th birthday. This special event will be taking place on the 9th June. So please come along and help celebrate this precious institution which I’m sure many of us have cause to be very thankful. Oliver also mentioned Move More Sheffield which is an initiative aimed at helping people in Sheffield become more active. For more information follow the link https://www.movemoresheffield.com/#movemore2020.

Running in front of me on the course was a father (Barry) and daughter (Megan) running together holding hands. Barry was giving Megan lots of positive support which was really lovely to hear. Barry said how great it was to see so many young people out running. He explained he goes to Sheffield United with his son (Megan supports Sheffield Wednesday!) He said running parkrun had become a great way of spending precious father/daughter time together. It was great to see both Megan and Barry enjoying their Saturday morning together. I think Megan particularly enjoyed sprinting to finish ahead of her Dad at the finish!
