Gunnersbury parkrun, Event number 91: 27th July 2013

A year on from the wonderful Olympic games and 205 runners with 21 fantastic volunteers arrived at Gunnersbury parkrun. The sun was shining and it was an expectant atmosphere. Our run director Arlene Gallagher welcomed first time runners at Gunnersbury - this week there were 31, and included fellow parkrunners from as far afield as Huddersfield, Manchester and Bushy Park! We hope you all enjoyed the run! The route was explained for anyone who had never run a parkrun before, and this week there were 26 people being welcomed into the parkrun family.

One of these, Sebastien ZAJACZKOWSKI, finished in 17:51 and was over the line 2nd, behind a regular Riel CAROL who crossed the line in 16:47. Justin LEE finished third in 18:17. The ladies were led home once again by Helen TARANOWSKI (18:30), followed by Isobel REA, another regular winner finishing in 20:13. Catherine STEPEHENS was 3rd in 22:14.

3 runners this week achieved age gradings of over 80%, well done on this achievement to Riel CAROL (80.14) John Joseph QUIRKE (81.19) and Helen TARANOWSKI (82.70)!

Lora MAXWELL (JM15-19) joined the 10 club today, congratulations, while Shivaun O'SHEA AND Dan HOUGHTON both completed 49 runs and will be joining the 50 club on their next runs!  It is great to see the number of red shirts appearing reguarly at Gunnersbury.  It is worth mentioning here that our 2nd anniversary is fast approaching and the leaders in the men and women's annual points competitions are Dane RYAN and Kirsten LUKSCH. Check out the full standings here.

In our army of fantastic volunteers were a number of juniors. They volunteered as part of the Joinin initiative and it was lovely to see how enthusiastic and responsible they were. Jonah THOMAS who took on the role of handing out finish tokens said it was "interesting seeing familiar runners", he "had to look twice". Finn THOMAS was one of 3 junior scanners who did a great job along with Ryan and Michael MORAN, said "it was interesting seeing all the names on their barcodes and encouraging them". There were also a few mini parkrunners who marshalled with their parents and took themselves off to the cafe for a well earned treat. Next week, if you have a 10, 50, 100 or 250 t-shirt, it would be great to have you volunteer. Please email the office if you would like to try a role at gunnersburyhelpers@parkrun.com

Please note there will be no parkrun at Gunnersbury on 31st August but we are lucky in this area to have a number of choices within a few miles, including Wormwood Scrubs, Richmond and Old Deer Park.

Finally, well done everyone who achieved a PB this week, including Teresa CONNELLY who in her 19 runs has improved her time from 39:30 to 31:06. Well done Teresa! Also Alex HICKMOTT (JM14) who this week was the first junior and got a PB of 18:57 and an age grading of 74.85%! One to watch for the future, well done.

Well that's all folks, have a fun week running, see you all next week!

Carol

Short note from Arlene:
Please be careful on the course. We are aware that the paths can be dangerous and we are working hard to raise awareness in the hope these will be upgraded soon. This week we had a faller, who got quite badly shaken, bruised and bloody. We hope you feel better soon Fiona Lavelle, and that it doesn't put you off come back to us in future.

Gunnersbury parkrun, Event number 90: 20th July 2013

What a marvellous day for a parkrun, so much fun was had... I think my favourite part was having my barcode scanned by the suited volunteer David Chryssides - if you were wondering, he'd been to a wedding, lost his keys and so was locked out, but didn't let the volunteers down and fulfilled his role suitably attired! Maybe barcode scanners should always be formally dressed for such a responsible task...

Then there were the one ten and many fifty shirts to be handed out, well done to each and everyone who now has a new hard-earned T-shirt to bring to Gunnersbury, we're getting redder by the week, with a tad of highly coveted black dotted about amongst the seriously parkrun committed, not forgetting Mr Anderson's amazing black and gold number!

Congratulations to Finn Thomas on his 11th birthday parkrun - friends and family turned out to celebrate with him, and having coerced half-way marshall Tim Carruthers to spur him on with a party popper or two, I feel the need to apologise if any runners were startled by the antics... Nice little mum vs son sprint-off at the finish line too...

First at the funnel was Dan Afshar with an impressive 17:31 finish, and First Female was Junior runner Lani Charles, getting her token at 24:16 - very inspiring... Warm welcomes to our visitors from far and near - Killerton, Sheffield and Wimbledon Common to name a few. We had 29 first timers - wahoo to you all, and 35 PBs: like I said at the beginning what a marvellous day .... and on our 90th Gunnersbury parkrun we should mention regular Roger Thomas's 90th run - the countdown's on for your black shirt! Special mention too to the 90th to cross the line, Cathy Redmond and in fact to every single one of us 231 parkrunners who made it round the beautiful park...

Coffee afterwards at the cafe was, as always, another highlight - a chance to catch up with everyone, to encourage, support and discuss training plans and generally big up the brilliant community that is parkrun.

JoinIn is yet another fabulous idea to encourage people to volunteer; I'm really looking forward to seeing the junior volunteers next week and then the following weeks' aims are:

Aug 3rd - 10, 50, 100 and 250 club runners,

Aug 10th - male parkrunners,

Aug 17th - female parkrunners,

Aug 24th - faster parkrunners (age grade over 70% - in my dreams!)

August 31st - families

September 7th - people who have never been to a parkrun before

To volunteer, click on the volunteer link at the top of the Gunnersbury parkrun website, then click on the future roster link and see which positions are still vacant (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/gunnersbury/futureroster/). Not only will you experience the rewards of volunteering, but also you'll receive your volunteer points; win-win!

Big thanks to all the lovely volunteers this week: Alan ANDERSON  •  Arlene GALLAGHER  •  Brian STAKELUM  •  Catherine STEPHENS  •  Chris EMERY  •  Clare EVERARD  •  David CHRYSSIDES  •  David WELCH  •  Geoff MARSHALL  •  Jim CLARK  •  John Stewart HART  •  Judith EARNSHAW  •  Kay LYDALL  •  Kelvin WALKER  •  Pamela WIGGINS  •  Robert KIPLING  •  Robert SHARPE  •  Sergio MARTINEZ GONZALEZ  •  Tim CARRUTHERS

Gunnersbury parkrun, Event number 89: 13th July 2013

As the sun rose above Gunnersbury park on what was one of the hottest mornings of the year 200+ runners gathered to brave the heat and enjoy a run in the sun.

Many thanks to Jasvir Sekhon for the wonderful carrot cakes she baked and sold on behalf of the charity 'Tommy.' Jasvir wanted to pass on the following message; "Many thanks to everyone's generosity, I have raised a total of £56 for Tommy's charity. Hope you all enjoyed the carrot cake. Now the hard bit is to run the London 10k tomorrow."

Good luck Jasvir (or well done) and thanks for the post run recovery cakes.

Gunnersbury parkrun, Event number 88: 6th July 2013

Gunnersbury parkrun, Event number 88, 6th July 2013.

This weekend summer finally arrived and we saw the nation's dream of a Brit winning Wimbledon again finally come true after 77 years! (that was roughly the time Alan ANDERSON was born!). Thankfully, Gunnersbury parkrun didn't quite have to wait quite so long for our own course record to go, and it went in style as Dan GRANT knocked 8 seconds off to finish in 15:46. Dan is apparently unattached and so a club somewhere should snap him up fast! Dan's girlfriend Jane KEMSHALL was also first for the women in 18:36 and we look forward to seeing you both again soon!

The current women's course record of 17.49 is held by Sarah KEMSHALL from July 2012, so the KEMSHALLs look like a fast family!

The first run of each month sees our pacing team helping at Gunnersbury and this week they helped 34 runners to get new PBs – well done everyone! Glen BRITTON, who is now becoming a regular face at Gunnersbury also ran his 50th parkrun so congratulations to you too Glenn!

As soon as the last runner came home over the finish line. Kelvin WALKER tried his idea of speeding up the results process, by doing them at the finish line – connected up to the internet by iPhone. The process worked fine, although the bright sun made the laptop screen a little hazy and we think we saved around 10 minutes, so might try it again.

Gunnersbury parkrun, Event number 87: 29th June 2013

This week has been a surprising one at Wimbledon with top seeds falling at the first hurdle!!  No such disappointment at Gunnersbury parkrun!!  A beautiful summer day saw 218 runners and 16 volunteers eagerly await the 87th event at Gunnersbury.  Race director Kelvin didn't waste any time and welcomed everyone, including fellow parkrunners from Milton Keynes ( a lovely course if you ever want to be a parkrun tourist), Roundshaw Downs and Valentines Park.

A note before going on to the stats, please be patient with results.  Parkrun has grown and is still growing, people behind the scenes work very hard to provide an efficient service and I know the feeling of the anticipation of my time on a Saturday.  Results can be received by text now if you log on to your athlete profile and provide a mobile number.

51 people will have been very happy this week achieving personal bests, well done all of you!

Special mentions

Well done to Jim CLARK who led the field today with a winning time of 17.46.  Rachid AFOUZAR (Ealing Eagles ) achieved a PB, finishing in 18:02, while Mark DELHUNTY (Ealing, Southall and Middlesex AC) finished in 18:08, with Niall QUINN (Ealing Eagles) finishing with a PB of 18:18. Katherine CASHELL (SW30-34) of Serpentine RC, was first lady, followed closely by Helen TARANOWSKI (VW40-44) of West 4 Harriers, and Anna CRITCHLOW (VW45-49) of West 4 Harriers, was third  in 18:37. All these ladies are no stranger to finishing as first female at Gunnersbury with 26 first finishing times between them!

As an aside, over 2/3 of runners at Gunnersbury today achieved an age grading of over 50%, with the first 3 ladies achieving 80+ %, and 19 achieving 70+%.  Some good times being run!!

As always there were some great runs by our juniors, but here are a few who are ones to follow for the future.

On his first visit to a parkrun, Joe BARNES finished not only first JM14, but finished in the top 5 with an age grading of 77.36%!  Great running Joe and hope to see you back.  Ken HOUGHTON a80lso deserves a mention.  As well as volunteering and being a handy photographer, he beat his pb today by over 2 minutes, finishing in 25:17.  Well done Ken! Rebecca WALFORD also achieved a PB and was the first JW15-19 finishing in 22:50, Louis MARRIOTT was the first JM15-19 (21:18), with Sarah GOODHART was the first JW14 (24:31)

50 Club – 2 more runners joined the 50 club today, congratulations to Tim Davies and Lee Stokes

10 Club – Adrian Britton completed his 10th parkrun, well done!

There are a number who are in their late 40's (parkruns, not ages), so expect a bumper presentation in the next month or so!

That's all folks except to say a bit thank you to our fantastic volunteers.  All the roles are valuable and if you are injured, a great way to keep in touch with parkrun.  Just emailgunnersburyhelpers@parkrun.com. Thank you this week go to
