Run Report – Event number 202

John Barker stormed to first place in this weekend’s run as 119 souls tackled a slightly slippery Harrow Lodge course.

It was John's second first place in as many outings at Harrow Lodge, so we'll see if the man from Thrift Green Trotters can make it a hat-trick next week,

The combination of recent rain and frost has started to turn the course into the challenging winter beast we know it can become at this time of year, but it didn’t deter a healthy field coming out to show January what we’re made of.

A special hello to our visitors from Birmingham’s Cannon Hill parkrun who came to sample the sights and sounds of Harrow Lodge, including George Sudhakar who lodged sixth place.

We also welcomed a clutch of first-timers, with newcomer John Whitehead popping his parkrun cherry with a seventh place finish.

Next week we’ll be celebrating our birthday which means you can shelve your cake-free New Year's resolutions for the day and join us in marking four years of Harrow Lodge parkrunning!

Another date for your diaries is 21 January, when regular runner and volunteer Mark Dalby completes his 100th run. Mark has requested a superhero theme. Where else will you get to wear pants outside your tights in public and not risk arrest?

A huge thank you to all those who have donated to our appeal for funds to purchase a defibrillator.

We only launched the appeal on 6 Jan and have surged beyond halfway towards the £700 target already. There’s still a little way to go, so if you’d like to donate, click here.

See the full results from today's run here. See you next week for the big No. 4

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 165 – 16/04/2016.

Well, parkrun made the news this week, didn’t it? Thanks to Little Stoke Parish Councils (LSPC) decision to impose a charge for parkrun to use their park, national and local TV, radio and newspapers reported shared the story with the country (and the rest of the world). Parliament has even has an Early Day motion on the subject, http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2015-16/1372. Well, I can only say, thanks for the free publicity LSPC; another 14000 runners registered with us this week!
In stark contrast to LSPC, we are lucky in Havering to be fully supported by our council, to the extent that they have variously provided permanent route markers, laid down bark and trimmed back hedges and bushes to provide an alternative route when it’s been too muddy. Plus of course, supported the opening of our sister parkrun at Raphaels Park last year. Saturday morning sees around 250 people running, walking, volunteering, making friends, using cafes and generally having a wonderful time in our parks that wouldn’t be there otherwise.
HLPR today attracted 114 runners who were somewhat perplexed by just how cold it was. It was a pleasure to welcome 26 new runners, including tourists from Colchester (‘Lovely 1 lap course’), Eltham, Gateshead and Cambridge – welcome to you all.
Tony Pecoraro was first across the line, after a good chase with Sam Atkins. First lady home was Colchester tourist Lorraine Collins, distinctive in her pr volunteers purple top.
Congratulations to Tracy Quigley on her 100th run today; that prized black t-shirt is yours to claim.
Enjoy you running and stay injury free – John x

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 159 – 05/03/2016.

When the North wind blows
Oh, it looks sunny, won’t need my big coat today while I’m standing there handing out finish tokens. Well, that turned out to be a schoolboy error. No sooner had we all gathered in the park than the sun went in and the true nature of this March morning dawned upon us. That Northerly wind was bitter. On the brighter side, it didn’t rain again.
105 brave souls made it out today and stepped forward to the starting instructions by run director Anne Wright. Among the contingent were 12 first timers, including 2 veteran tourists with over 300 runs between them; the double Dans (Spinks and Houghton) from Hillingdon AC and Ealing Eagles RC finishing in 59th and 60th place in 29mins.
20 of you clearly had an extra Weetabix this morning as you recorded PB’s – well done. Most of them were at the beginning of their parkrun journey; I hope this is the start of the same fantastic journey that many parkrunners around the world have experienced.
The park is now blessed with 10 new parkrun course marker posts, courtesy of the council. We now have 16 posts green posts with a white top marking the route; hopefully this will allow our volunteers to spend a bit less time putting up signs in the morning and grab an extra 15 minutes in bed!

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 142 – 07/11/2015. Rain? What rain?

Well, despite the dire weather forecast last night from the BBC which showed the whole south east under a dark blue patch, with the odd flick of yellow, Harrow Lodge parkrun was once again [mostly] dry. All right, there was the occasional sprinkling, but compared to the forecast, I maintain that counts as another dry run.

And despite the forecast, there was another solid turnout of 100 runners, including 9 first timers that we welcomed to our community. Underfoot the conditions weren’t too bad considering the amount of rain that has in the last couple of days, just a few soft patches beginning to appear. However, it might be worth digging out or buying a pair of cross country shoes as it sure will start getting slippy soon.

A technological development for you iphone users – parkrun now has an app available. Details can be found by following the link https://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/articles/204254161-The-parkrun-iPhone-app Those of us that haven’t bought into the Apple experience will just have to wait – no Android version yet (let them be the guinea pigs!)

If you’re a Dedicated Follower of Fashion (©The Kinks) and of parkrun and perhaps fed up of your soggy paper bar code, you can become the proud owner of a highly durable wristband, tag or credit card printed with your personal barcode. Available from ERS http://www.parkrun-barcode.org.uk/ and at a very reasonable price.

Thanks to everybody who has donated to the Harrow Lodge fund. parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation and will always be free, but donations are always welcome and allow us to buy prizes and replacement kit when it wears out. If you’d care to make a donation you can do so here http://www.parkrun.org.uk/harrowlodge/aboutus/

An early reminder of some dates for your diary if a once a week parkrun fix isn’t enough. Over the Christmas period, Harrow Lodge will be running on Boxing Day (Saturday), New Years Day and Saturday 2nd Jan. Barking parkrun has a Christmas Day run (silly hats or fancy dress, of course!)

To receive emails with news and requests for volunteering, runners should update their options using the manage my profile option on their results email.

Enough already! Enjoy your running, stay safe and injury free, John x

Run No. 141 – Halloween High jinks at Harrow Lodge!

Our Halloween parkrun saw plenty of you get into the spooky spirit with various outfits on show as we knocked off run No. 141 at Harrow Lodge.

Richard Graham led the field home with a new PB of 19:19 with Bobby Sears, Zac Minchin and Barry Smith following him across the line under the 20-minute mark, with Zac’s third place his first time on this course.

Rebecca Brown was our first lady in a time of 22:57.

Mark Dalby and Neil Trusler, dressed as a zombie and a bloodthirsty chef respectively, helped those chasing sub 25- and sub-30-minte times to hit their targets.

We were also graced by a visit from centurion Huw Keene, a member of the Serpentine Running Club and Kingston parkrun regular.

“I’m touring around the parkruns now, aiming for 100 different ones – I’m on 67 now,” he said. “I’m also aiming for 200 in total, and to sync 100 different ones with my 200 total. I’m also aiming to finish all Greater London parkruns, and I’ve got 10 to go now out of 47.”

In total, 97 of you turned out for a fun morning had by all. A big thanks to our volunteers and to Bill Clissold for donating our new kilometre markers. He was the marshal in the gorilla suit.

Don’t forget, if you’d like to help out, you can do so by emailing harrowlodgehelpers@parkrun.com.

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 139 – 17/10/2015.

50 Not Out (x3)!

There’s a distinct chill in the air to greet us parkrunners now as we move deeper into the autumn, but it was at least still and dry at Harrow Lodge as we all gathered around the blue tarpaulin of bags.  As the team of wonderful volunteers dispersed to their designated marshalling points, Roger Winston called the new runners to briefing and an impressive 20 stepped forward to be welcomed to our friendly, inclusive community.  Among those, it was also a warm welcome to 7 tourists.

Antonio Pecoraro, a frequent winner here at HLPR was awarded the park runner of the month prize, entitling him to a new pair of trainers from Sweatshop, but as custom dictates, he wasn’t here this week to collect his prize!

With the run underway, the crowd of 121 runners began to string out around the park, from the very fast led by Bobby Sears, to the not so fast Terry Burnham at the rear.  Its important to remember however, that this is a run, not a race, everyone is welcome and your time at the finish is always better than everyone still tucked up in bed!  There was also an impressive 29 PBs today, so well done to you all.

Now, to the 50 NOT OUT reference of the title.  That’s for Mr. Dave Thomas, a man who clearly likes a bit of order in his life.  Not only was today his 50th run, but he finished (deliberately?) in 50th place in the week when he celebrated his 50th birthday.  Excellent planning, Dave, one to remember!

Running about a bit can become addictive; if you are thinking about joining a club, I heartily recommend it.  There are numerous in the area, including Havering 90 Joggers, who are responsible for setting up this parkrun.  Don’t think you won’t be good enough; clubs cater for all abilities from new runners to marathoners and you’ll have some company when it’s dark and cold outside.  Take a look at the website, come along and try us out, join if you like us.

Harrow Lodge parkrun Event # 138, 10th October 2015

It was a beautiful autumnal morning for Harrow Lodge parkrun event 138 where 92 parkrunners, of which 7 were first timers (Welcome),19 recorded PBs (Well done) and 4 different clubs were represented, completed the circuit. After a wet week the course was better that expected with the going good to soft, if a little wet underfoot. But what a beautiful way to savour the elements of the season, I really can't think of a better way to kick off the weekend!

A big thank you as always to our volunteers who ensure parkrun operates - There's always room for more and its a great way to get to know your fellow parkrunners - so why not plan ahead and join the volunteers one Saturday soon.

Reminder 31st October is the "Halloween Run" so get your costumes ready for a ghoulish morning run.

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 136 – 26/09/2015.

Oh, What a beautiful morning!

The sun is out, the sky is blue, it’s beautiful and so are you parkrunners! A fabulous morning for a run, although the heavy September dew left us all with soggy feet. It certainly looked like a large crowd of brightly clad people gathering for the start in the glorious sunshine. Tracey Quigley took over the new runners briefing today and around 10 people joined in (but there are only 5 first timers in the results?). Following this, our regular Run Director, Dave Keeley, introduced our new Run Director Debbie Ennis, who did a sterling job organising todays run. Welcome to the role and thanks Debbie. In fact, a big thanks as always to our volunteer team, without whom we cannot have our fabulous Saturday morning feel good fix.

The volunteer roster is looking in good shape for the next few weeks, but please feel free to drop the harrow lodge helpers email a line if you can help out; you’ll always be made to feel welcome and we meet for a coffee after in the café by the lake. It’s a great way to make new friends and join the parkrun community.

With 18 pb’s today, there was some strong running throughout the field, from Bobby Sears (2nd, 19:03, 9s quicker) through to Sharon Goddard (97th, 38:39, 1m 14s quicker). It looks like our pacers at 30 and 35 minutes provided some inspiration, with some pbs around those times.  Good work everyone.

If you’re enjoying yourselves doing this running lark and want to think about joining a club, I heartily recommend doing it. There are numerous in the area, including the very friendly Havering 90 Joggers, whom I joined earlier this year. Don’t think you won’t be good enough; all good clubs cater for all abilities from new runners to marathoners.  Take a look at the website, come along and try us out, join if you like us.

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 135 – 19/09/2015.

You've all done very well

Another lovely morning at parkrun, with the sun coming out and shining on us. After all the rain earlier in the week, the ground was softening up in a few places (as nothing to how it will be later in the year!) and the grass was also quite long and wet underfoot. Still, a loevley morning for a run round the park.

A special mention to our volunteers this week, with a full roster for this week and next. The exception New Runners Briefing and Report Writer. It would make a nice change to hear and read someone else’s words for a change, so please put your name for these roles too.

The roster is also looking quite healthy for already for the next following weeks, but not all the roles are filled, so don’t be shy, come and help out – it couldn’t be easier and someone might even buy you a cuppa afterwards in the café by the lake.

104 runners completed the course today, and unfortunately Keeley Sewel twisted her ankle in a pothole and sensibly withdrew. Hope it isn’t too bad and you’re running again very soon.

We welcomed 12 first timers this week, including some visitors and there were 3 unknowns. A superb 22 recorded pbs (over 20% of the field!) A special mention to Rosmarie Sayer, who this week smashed 4 mins off her time. Rosemarie may be near the back of the field, but determination is worth a mention wherever you finish.

Better late than never

Harrow Lodge parkrun # 134 - 12/09/2015.
Short but Sweet.
Very late this week, so the bear minimum and not my usual ramblings (I’m sure you’re pleased).

Firstly, an important and big thank you to our volunteers, who were out in force and signed up early without the need for Dave to send out an email. This is very much appreciated and hopefully you can continue in this vain – it makes organising the event a lot less stressful.
Secondly, a big thanks from me, as I was nominated parkrunner of the month for August and won a pair of trainers from Sweatshop. I’ve got them already and they are shiny! (an afternoon at Westfield is not so nice to get them, however).
Thirdly, congratulations are due to Laura Kelly on completing her 100th parkrun on Saturday. The bubbly was well deserved, the cake and chocolates thoroughly appreciated.
