#165 -16th February 2019

Lydney parkrun
Event number 165
16th February 2019

For the uninitiated the weather today was a little dull, grey and misty, but those of the parkrun persuasion instantly knew that the not-too-warm, not-too-cold conditions were near perfect for a Saturday morning parkrun around the boating lake in Lydney. And so this week a very decent turnout of 133 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 18 were first timers to Lydney and the conditions helped an amazing 31 participants (over 23% of us!) achieve new Personal Bests. More on these later.

The parkrun today was made possible by 18 volunteers of whom we are all very grateful: Mark HARVEY • Jeremy CREASEY • Fiona CREASEY • Christopher Michael BARNES • David PRICE • Vic N' SKRUFF (AINS) • Kevin MCENTEE • Lucy CREASEY • Simon LOCKHART • Brian PRICE • Christine WORTHY • Chris RUCK • Sandra HAWKINS • Graham WORTHY • Bridget DAVIES • Stuart LODGE • Justine JONES • Emily DAVIES.

Our volunteers really are fantastic, and frequently go above and beyond in support of the event and ensuring that it is fun, safe and organised for everyone to enjoy. This includes ‘hidden’ roles such as baking cakes, replenishing teabag stocks, taking towels home to wash, and inspecting the course beforehand. Special thank you to Simon LOCKHART who forwent his run today to step in as emergency timekeeper. Remember that you too can volunteer – it’s fun, easy and enhances your parkrun experience. Just email us, message us on facebook or see us next week.

Now to some stats…First across the line today was Henry JONES who recorded a new PB with his time of 18:54 on his 4th outing at Lydney and 11th parkrun overall. Well done on your first sub-19, Henry, and for taking slot number 69 on our 500 fastest ever Lydney runs. Following Henry home was Charlie SMITH, who runs for Birchfield Harriers up in Birmingham and is in the Junior 11-14 category. Charlie’s time of 19:42 was hugely impressive, and a new PB on his 2nd run at Lydney and 60th run altogether. Third across the line was Paul STUART with a time of 19:52. Whilst we welcomed Paul to Lydney for the first time this morning, he is no stranger to parkrun with 117 runs under his belt, predominantly at Ashton Court which is in the shadow of Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

First female parkrunner home today, and 6th overall, was Em EVANS who recorded a new PB with her time of 20:02 on her 8th outing at Lydney of 9 parkruns completed. Your first sub-20 is surely within touching distance, Em – keep pushing! Talking of which, you were being pushed hard by Lily WILLIAMS who finished just 2 seconds later as second female and 7th overall in an impressive time of 20:04 on her 2nd run at Lydney and just 6th parkrun overall. Lily runs in the Junior 11-14 category. Third female across the line (and 21st overall) came Rebecca WARD with a time of 23:19. Rebecca is in the Junior 15-17 category, a member of Chepstow Harriers, and a true graduate of parkrun having completed 61 junior parkruns before 77 senior of which 12 have been around our Lydney course.

We welcomed 18 first timers to Lydney today, some of whom came from afar: Charlie and Andy SMITH travelled from Kingsbury Water parkrun, Rose HAYDOCK from Newark parkrun as well as visitors from Ashton Court, Thornbury, Burnham & Highbridge (which is south of Weston-super-Mare – I looked it up), and all the way from the Forest of Dean! Of those 18, a fabulous 5 were taking their very first steps on their parkrun journey. Standup, please,  Paul KNIGHT, Rachael ROBINSON, Phoebe STONECHILD, Kim FLETCHER and Emily DAVIES and take your well deserved applause. Thank you for choosing Lydney for your first parkrun and I hope the leg muscles don’t ache too much tomorrow!

There were no official milestones today, but I note that our very own Claire LAVENDER hits the big 200 next time out. I for one am VERY partial to flapjacks – just saying!

Back to those personal bests. With 31 PBs recorded today, there are too many to list individually, but huge congratulations to every one of you. Perhaps it was the advantageous conditions, perhaps there was something in the water of our runners’ cups of tea this morning, but amazingly seven of our top eight finishing runners today achieved PBs (and the other was running at Lydney for the first time.)

Perhaps special mentions should go to Rebecca WARREN who is on fire at the moment with her second PB in two weeks, and Peter JOHNSON completing his 3rd run at Lydney of 55 in total with a new PB time of 36:30. Actually, Pete finds it hard not to register PBs with a surely nearly record breaking 44% hit rate! Also Atsuko BARNES who achieved her first PB since June 2018 with her time of 25:49 and Age Grading of 67.46% on her 80th run, and Becky WELLSTED who recorded a PB with her time of 40:11 on her 7th run. Oh, and a quick note to Elijah PEARSON…huge congratulations on your PB time today of 20:01 which earned you 5th place overall. Please, please find the time to print some more barcodes before next week. I’d hate you to miss out on recording your first sub-20 (which is surely just around the corner) because your dodgy barcode won’t scan!

Talking of barcodes, there were just 2 of you who were without theirs today, which as a percentage is not too bad at all, but I’d still love us to get to zero. Remember #DFYB.

On the Age Grading front, top of the tree was the afore-mentioned Lily WILLIAMS with 78.32% I told you that was an impressive run! Second was Graham WORTHY with 76.05% and third Walter LEACH with 75.65. Both Graham and Walter are stalwarts of Lydney parkrun having amassed 380 runs between them. Not much of a tourist, Graham is admirably dedicated to Lydney, with 59 of his 63 parkruns with us. His 6.35% tourist quotient is more than offset, however, by his 28 volunteer roles completed, giving a volunteer quotient of 44.44% (although I think I’ve just made that measure up!) Walter on the other hand is a triple silver level parkrun obsessive and something of a globetrotter with 20 tourist runs under his belt.

Thank you to everyone who took part today whether you walked, ran, jogged or volunteered. See you all next week!

#161 – 19th January 2019

Lydney parkrun

Event number 161
19th January 2019

This week 93 people awoke to find that the sleet and snow of last night was little more than a bad dream and eagerly jumped out of bed to enthusiastically run, jog or walk our Lydney boating lake course. 9 were first timers and 7 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 9 different clubs took part.

This morning we welcomed Guy WYATT who was visiting our beautiful corner of the country and decided to run his 12th parkrun as a first time tourist here. Guy normally alternates his parkrunning between Oak Hill in London and Ashford in Kent and, debating whether to do Forest of Dean or Lydney, opted for the latter as he guessed it might be firmer under foot. Well, after the rain sleet and snow of recent days, Lydney was hardly mud free, but as you forgot to pack your mask and snorkel Guy you probably made the right choice!

First male across the line, and first overall was Martyn WINSER in an impressive time of 18:00 dead. This was Martyn's first run with us at Lydney in over a year - don't leave it for another year to show us how it's done Martyn! Second male and second overall was John FINLAYSON on just his 4th visit to Lydney. John normally runs at Coventry parkrun, but his time today of 19:38 was a PB and nearly 30 seconds quicker than his previous run with us, which was also a PB. See you again soon John for a Lydney PB hat-trick! Third home, and third overall came Nick SEAGRAVE, a veteran of 232 parkruns mainly in the midlands and particularly Brueton Park (original stomping ground of your RD today).

First female across the line today was Janice LOCKYER, a member of Worthing and District Harriers who was running her 3rd parkrun at Lydney and 14th overall. A stirling run today, Janice, and at 23:17, just 5 seconds off your PB! Second female runner home was Jan Morris in 24:05 and completing her 68th parkrun of which the vast majority (53) have been with us in Lydney. Third female today was Lucy CREASEY. Lucy runs in the Junior 15-17 category which makes her placing today even more impressive. Lucy's time this morning was a creditable 25:10, and whilst a little short of her PB of 23:49, this is perhaps understandable as Lucy was up especially early this morning volunteering as a much valued member of our set-up team! Lucy is also something of a local parkrun tourist having run at Newport, Severn Bridge, Thornbury and Forest of Dean. Lucy, thank you for your commitment to parkrun and see you at Lydney again soon!

As well as the aforementioned John FINDLAYSON, a further six parkrunners achieved fabulous PBs this morning: Robin GRANT, Chris BARNETT, George PHILLIPS, Catherine PHILLIPS, Sarah PHILLIPS (far be it for me to say, but that's more Phillips than an electric razor shop!), and Elijah PEARSON who runs in the junior 11-14 category. Sixth overall, Elijah came home in 20:56 on just his second ever parkrun - one to watch out for there I think. Very well done to all our PB-ers today

The event was made possible by 18 volunteers, to whom we are especially grateful:

Louise INSALL • Mark HARVEY • Jeremy CREASEY • Fiona CREASEY • Christopher Michael BARNES • David PRICE • Atsuko BARNES • Victoria SIMS • Julie FARR • Lucy CREASEY • Brian PRICE • Christine WORTHY • Seth PETERS • Sandra HAWKINS • Graham WORTHY • Jim INSALL • Stuart LODGE • William BROWN

Don't forget, should you wish to join the band of volunteers it's easy and fun. Message us on Facebook, or see a volunteer next Saturday morning.
