Einstein’s 100th!

A historic day at Newport parkrun. Carl "Einstein" Elliot made his 100th appearance. A popular regular, Carl is always helping others to get round & to improve their times at Newport parkrun. Carl was unusually short of words when he gave a short speech this morning "Thanks for coming.....".

Also completing their 100th appearances were Rob Davies & Ian Mcrory. Well done guys! It's fitting that the T shirt system is now back on. So these and any others owed a T shirt should go into their parkrun profile and order the new snazzy Tribesport 10, 50, 100 & even volunteers T shirts  (if you have volunteered 25 times or more).

We also welcomed parkrun tourists from Holland as well as from neighbouring Llyn Lech Owain parkrun.

We look forward to seeing more tourists in the coming weeks.

Dave’s Birthday parkrun – 100 Today!

There was singing at the start of the 225th Newport parkrun. This event happened to co-incide with the birthday of regular runner, Dave Westley who was also celebrating his 100th parkrun. Dave was visibly touched by the singing & the presentation of a special helium balloon as he is not a great advocate of a song & dance upon these occasions.

We were also proud to present the Sweatshop Prize to another regular runner, Allyson Edmonds who has notched up over 80 parkruns but recently started knocking out PBs again, all due to hard work in training.

This special day was also topped off with fantastic support for National Trust to repair some of the course. Drew from National Trust provided all the tools and the supervision to parkrunners; Dave & Cara Gates, Pam Grantham, Wayne Rayner, Carl Elliott, Ian Macrory, Jim McGuiness, Tim Wright, Bob Watson, Rob Davies, Rob Anderson & Steve Lockwood. Thanks to you all for sparing the time. We will be continuing this scheme in coming weeks. Everyone who helped will be credited as volunteers by NT. Great work!

“Welsh parkathon” comes to Newport parkrun

The "parkathon" concept was conceived by the core team at Strathclyde parkrun in 2013 when they decided to run all 10 Scottish parkruns in one weekend. The idea incorporates one officially recorded Saturday parkrun plus all the others as "Freedom Runs" recorded as a personal run. Last year the target was more challenging with all 18 parkruns in Northern Ireland completed.

This year they decided to tour the 12 events in Wales in the very first "Welsh parkathon". On the first day they were accompanied by parkrun UK MD, Tom Williams sampling some of our Welsh delights for the first time. The tour started in Bangor at the formidable Penrhyn Castle which hosts the very scenic Penrhyn parkrun. It was followed by Conwy, overlooking the stunning Conwy Castle and then heading to mid Wales for Aberystwyth & what most be the most creative course in a small space. Day one was completed in the south with the idyllic Corby parkrun in Pembrokeshire and finally the trails of Llyn Lech Owain parkrun, both events created & supported by TROTs Running Club.

Newport parkrun was the 6th in the series of 12 and starting at 0900 was the one officially recorded parkrun on the tour. As for each location, the Strathclyde team brought out their banner plus the parkrun name to make every photograph a great individual memory shot including the hosts from each parkrun team. However, they made special effort at Newport by erecting a huge Scottish flag in the overflow car park of Tredegar House. Lliswerry Runners & Caerleon RC have managed this event as a partners since its launch.

The hallowed turf of Pontypool rugby ground was the photo opportunity for the next parkrun and once again a warm welcome from the organising team from Pontypool & Fairwater clubs. By the time the tourists reached parkrun number 8 at Pontyprydd, each start was accompanied by groans as tired legs were fired up again. To compete Day 2, the buses headed to the sea-side at Porthcawl and finally to Cardiff; Wales' very first parkrun. Once again, the team was greeted by warm welcomes from hosts Les Croupiers & fellow parkrunners from Bridgend, Run4All Neath & Pontypridd Rodents.

Sunday morning started with a breezy but beautiful run at Barry Island. Core team members from Penarth & Dinas, Les Croupiers & Pegasus were there to greet & run with the visitors. Last but not least was the highest parkrun in Wales at Bryn Bach. Once again the yellow shirts of Run4All Neath were there to give the Scottish visitors a great send off.

In every location, the touring parkrunners from Scotland were greeted with a warm Welsh welcome from the core team members & highlights the efforts of our great running clubs that are the mainstay of parkrun.

The whole weekend illustrates how parkrun can bring our running communities together.

Newport parkrun reaches 500 Finishers!

It was a historic day for Newport parkrun today. Not only were there the most ever number of finishers but we broke the 500 barrier!

A very special thanks to all the volunteers & in particular today's Run Director Howard Mason.

Pictured below are the 499 & 500 Tokens which have never seen the light of day until today.

First Timers Flock To Newport parkrun

Word must be getting around. Newport parkrun attracted visitors from as far afield as Falkirk and Eastleigh. 44 First Timers were recorded today. Among them were Laura & Karen, pictured here with their family..

It was another large field and at 472 finishers, did not include the Couch to 5k group, who so far are not yet able to complete the full 5k. This means that over 500 turned out today & it was great to see politeness & respect between fast & slower runners all round the course, preserving the "very friendly" tag that we have acquired.

Congratulations to Ryan Jones who was announced as March Sweatshop prize winner. Ryan has taken more than 6 minutes off his PB and had 4 consecutive PBs in March. Well done also to James Penrose & Eira Jones to achieve first male & female at their first attempts.

Once again, a special thank you to all our volunteers today!

Biggest Best Birthday Brings Bounty!

4 years old & still growing! There's no better way to celebrate Newport parkrun's 4th birthday than with a bumper number of finishers. This week, token number 487 saw the light of day for the for the first time. The numbers reflect the great effort by the Couch to 5k  runners who all did their 5k celebration run today at the end of the latest 9 week programme. One victorious C25k'er had special help from Tail Runner, Diane to encourage her round. Big thanks to the other volunteers too, without which we could not stage this fantastic weekly event.

But this was only the start of it. There were celebrations galore in the Brewhouse afterwards. The impressive parkrun 4th birthday cake was created by our National Trust catering team who also worked non stop to get the runners their celebration teas & coffees.

Today's celebrity cake cutter was birthday girl Celia Marsh. Many thanks to the juniors for taking around the trays of cake to the hungry runners. Another celebrity parkunner today was Ruth Ovey who had the family to pace her around her 100th parkrun. That's over 300 miles. Well done Ruth.

Today also brought to a conclusion the Male & Female Point Table winners. Huge congratulations to Ivor Cardwell & Gemma Acreman for all their effort & commitment over the past year. Commiserations to Angela Potter-Collins who was a very close 2nd.

Here's the analysis from today's historical event. Well done to everyone who ran today & particularly to the 119 who ran personal bests!

Rico brings “The House” down

How could Newport parkrun get any better after last week's record 477 finishers?

The answer is by the presence of the hugely hardworking team of parkrun office: Tom Williams, Joanne Sinton-Hewitt & Helen Hood and parkrun organising teams of Colby (Pembrokeshire), Conwy, Pomphrey Hill (Bristol) & Yoevil Montacute. All were in town discussing the incredible success & future growth of parkrun.

If that was not enough, the team from next new Welsh parkrun in Barry Island took over volunteer roles to train up for their event. Trained by Newport's super hero volunteer Howard Mason these guys were bursting with enthusiasm.

Today was also a celebration of Ivor Cardwell's 200th parkrun (all at Newport). He hasn't missed an event in the whole 4 years as he has volunteered for every event he hasn't run.

Biggest cheer of the day went to young Rico Anderson who was awarded the Sweatshop Prize for his incredible performance achieving 5 PBs in the last 6 events and an overall improvement of over 20 minutes. Tom Williams awarded him the voucher from Sweatshop to chose a pair of new trainers.

See you all next week for the celebration of Newport parkrun's 4th Birthday. Cake will be available in the Brewhouse after the event. Another great parkrunday awaits.......!

OMG 477!

Newport parkrun's finishers record was well & truly smashed today. A combination of Couch to 5k's from both Newport & Chepstow, Chepstow Harriers Red Nose Day sponsored event, Pacers and a lovely dry, fresh spring morning were responsible for swelling the ranks.

Happiest runner of the day award goes to birthday girl Yvonne Odukwe who came in just behind the Tail Runner. She had treatment like royalty from the marshals & barcoders because we all like a smiley face. Well done Yvonne on only your 2nd Newport parkrun.

Also very happy was another birthday girl & regular Newport parkrunner, Sarah Beamish who came very close to her PB today.Well done Sarah!

Thanks to everyone for making today a record breaker! Hopefully we will see you all again next week when the who's who of parkrun arrive at Newport including parkrun Managing Director Tom Williams, Joanne Sinton-Hewitt & Helen Hood from parkrun office. Also coming are organisers from other Welsh parkruns & some trainees from the next new Welsh parkrun!

Special thanks to our volunteers & pacers today, without which we could not stage this fabulous event!. Very special thanks to Howard for the results processing. I think he has moved up a couple of age categories!

T Shirt News

I have had a few questions about the availability of 10, 50 & 100 Club T Shirts as well as the new Volunteer T Shirt. We have been advised by parkrun that these are now likely to be available in June.

Please see the following news post from parkrun:

Newport parkrun Edging Towards 50,000!

One would be forgiven for thinking it was midsummer with the dry conditions, bright sunshine and 392 finishers! Over 30 of these completed their very first parkrun anywhere, so we can safely say that the popularity of parkrun continues to grow. As we approach our 4th birthday in March, we also approach a key milestone in participation as there have been 49,580 separate runs so far. So 420 finishers next week would be nice.

Today's run was once again attended by the Couch to 5k group, now in week 6 of their 9 week programme. It was clear from the smiley faces that more & more of them are deciding to "go for it" and run/walk to the finish to get a result recorded. These are the real winners from today's event!

At the sharp end Miles Thomas romped home to another first place and David Williams took it much easier due to his training for Dusseldorf Marathon. Chepstow Harrier Nikki Morgan was first lady home for the 15th time and also 2nd in the Age Grading today, with 2nd place Becky Rothwell from Lliswerry Runners just one place behind.

None of this could be possible without the super support from our volunteers who were give recognition this morning for offering their time so that others could run. A special mention goes to the Chippers (Sandy & Neil) who were today's timers for the first time.

Here is the full analysis of today's results:
