Bolton Ironman

IronmanUK Bolton 2012 – be part of it!

Volunteers are needed to help make this year’s IronmanUK Bolton event a success.

Last year’s event saw thousands of visitors and over £2.5 million brought into the north west  economy. A large part of the success was down to the hundreds of volunteers who supported the day.
IronmanUK Bolton 2012 takes place on Sunday July 22 and will be one of the North West’s sporting highlights of the year.  More than 1500 competitors will start with a 2.4 mile swim in Pennington Flash; then cycle 112 miles including loops around Rivington, Chorley and Adlington; and finish with running a full marathon to Bolton town centre.
Volunteers are needed to help with:
§ Bike catching – taking bikes from the athletes as they complete the bike course.
§ Transition – helping athletes find their kit and also packing it away for them.
§ Aid stations – helping athletes fuel their race by handing out drinks, gels or other food.
§ Registration – athletes collect registration packs and timing chips.
§ Road marshall – ensuring that competitors can proceed safely whether cycling or running as well as being a point of contact for spectators viewing the event.

Whilst the majority of volunteering opportunities are on the Sunday, volunteers can also assist from the Thursday onwards, when competitors start to register for the event, through to the Monday when the Awards Ceremony takes place.
For more information on the roles available, and to register as a volunteer go to   http://www.ironmanuk.com/ironman-uk/volunteer/why-be-a-volunteer
or contact Geoffrey Bennette,  IronmanUK’s Volunteer Manager at geoffrey.bennette@worldenduranceuk.com /  07531 1927971.

Pennington Fash parkrun run report event 61

It's a little bit muddy, this path did I find ......

The day didn't start too promising and it was drizzling a bit when we got to the park, not a lot just that fine drizzle that soaks you through! fortunately it only lasted a few minutes and it was soon feeling much nicer so by the time most runners arrived it was dry and we were in for a nice run.

Unfortunately the over night rain did mean that the very bottom 10 yards or so of the grass bank was a bit slippery and we had to revert to the bridle path for the run itself.

But all in all it was a good morning with some very good runs done and some good chat and laughs as well

I'd also like to personally thank those of you that are working on my diet for me and helping by eating all the biscuits before I get back, yes I know I had a bacon sandwich but that doesn't count does it? it's always good to get back to the cabin and see it full of folk

We have lots of things happening around us in the next few weeks and I thought I'd bring some to your attention:

Race for Life - 10th June.
Bolton Ironman - 22nd July.

Pennington Fash parkrun run report event 60

Another beautiful day and another attendance record

It was a lovely day at the Flash for todays run, the sun was out but not too strong. we had reached our 60th parkrun at Pennington Flash and as is custom for us on our '20th' events we ran the loop section in reverse, last time we did this the grass bank was a little slippy but this time it was almost perfect.

Running it this way is faster which is why we always start around 50 metres further back down the path than normal to try and reduce the PB hit we would get otherwise, we had around half the PB's scored this week than last week so it did some good

We were expecting to be a little low on runners this week as several of our regulars were involved in supporting the lastest parkrun to pop up, Preston, but that didn't stop well over 100 runners set off unfortunately we did have a few pull out but we still had a new record of 107 completers.

There was a bit of a problem with getting the result emails sent out and results posted on the website, can I appologise for the delay but at the same time I must stress that this was nothing to do with the volunteer team at Pennington Flash, we got the results posted very quickly but the parkun HQ computers were having a bit of a slow day  I know it can be frustrating as you wait to hear, but it's also frustrating for the volunteers as they think that what they did went wrong!

The Results.
107 runners completed the course today, which is a second new course record in two weeks for us this included 19 folks that joined us for the first time at Pennington Flash parkrun. It is always good to welcome new faces to our parkrun and we hope you enjoyed your run and will be back to see us again soon.

This week we had 23 Personal Best times set which brings our total to 889. A big well done to you all!

Our male winner this week was Michael O'Neill of Wigan Phoenix who scored his 2nd win in his 2nd outing with us, he came in at 16:45. Michael was followed home by last weeks winner 'unknown athlete' with last weeks third placed Peter Rice of Horwich RMI Harriers coming in in third place with a time of 17:17.

In the Ladies race; Michelle Liddle scored her 4th win at Pennington Flash parkrun, she came in at 22:44. She was followed in by Danielle Thompson of Wigan & District Harriers & AC with a time of 23:45 and Laura Babynec of Astley & Tyldesley RR who came in with a time of 24:00.

The Top of the Mens points table has Alan Smith again pulling ahead with 921 points some 46 points in front of Dillon Alcock who is now leading Tim Murphy by 30 points.

The Ladies points table sees Rachael Sidebotham leading with 879 points followed 32 points back by Liz Hedgecock with 847 after Liz clawed back some 95 points, Liz has a 59 point lead over 3rd placed Lydia Sidebotham who has 788 points.

Age Graded Scores
Jeff Whittington still leads in the Age Graded competition with a grading of 85:65%.
This weeks best Age Graded Scores were:
Peter Rice [VM45-49]- 84.67% - second week at the top
Michael O'Neill [SM30-34]- 77.61%
James Hilton [SM25-29]- 73.57%

Jeff has held the record for quite a while now and one of his closest rivals is Roger Alsop who was running at Princes Park parkrun in Liverpool today, Roger scored an age grading of 85.97%, if he can replicate that at Pennington Flash Jeff might have a battle on his hands

Volunteering.
A really big thank you to all of the volunteers today: Alison, Chris, James, Les, Tim, Trena and Vincent.

Pennington Fash parkrun run report event 59

1 plus 1 equals minus 3

We had a really nice day at the park today, it was lovely and sunny and the paths were more or less mud free  add to that we had a new course record of runners and all in all it was a good one, however we did have a couple of issues:

1 runner fell over but is fine apart from a couple of grazes and bruised ego, she was more concerned about the fact that she had taken another runner down with her and wanted to apologize to the other runner for this.

We had a technical issue with the timer, it didn't start when I said GO! fortunately my watch did start on time so I was aware that we would have to do some correcting after the event. We got the timer going some 15 seconds later.

When I was processing the results I knew we had to adjust the times by the 15 seconds it had taken to get the timer going, so I dropped the timing data into a spreadsheet to make it easier unfortunately I goofed ! now here is the rub; I'm a Microsoft Specialist Master Instructor and can make spreadsheets jump through hoops, however my maths skills are very low level  (spreadsheets are basically programming not arithmetic) so when I have to adjust the times by 15 seconds I put in a formula to do it. I needed to add 15 seconds to all the times and managed to subtract 15 seconds instead! which is why the initial results were out by 30 seconds.

Many thanks to EVERYONE that got in touch to point this out

Running Backwards

Next week is run 60 so we will be running the pool backwards .

The Results.

In the Ladies race; Suzanne Gregory of Astley & Tyldesley RR scored her 1st win at Pennington Flash parkrun, she came in at 22:45. She was followed in by Amy Moran of Warrington AC with a time of 23:40 and Linda Whittaker who came in with a time of 23:44.

The Top of the Mens points table has Alan Smith again pulling ahead with 829 points some 37 points in front of Dillon Alcock who is now leading Robert Wilson by 32 points.

The Ladies points table sees Rachael Sidebotham leading with 879 points followed 127 points back by Liz Hedgecock with 752 points, Liz has a 55 point lead over 3rd placed Lydia Sidebotham who has 697 points.
