Peterborough parkrun #255 – Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

Was it really the start of a Bank Holiday weekend? parkrunday brought out the sun and once again parkrunners followed; 605 walkers, joggers and runners gathered for Peterborough parkrun #255. Many thanks to Thorney Running Club and friends, who this week provided 48 voluncheers to setup, marshal and manage the funnel for your safety and enjoyment. Thorney RC are a small but very friendly running club based to the east of the city hosting 3 popular major events in the local run calendar, a 5k which is part of the Peterborough Grand Prix Series, a 5 mile in August and a 10k in March. See for club details.

Firstly, an apology – sorry if you were kept waiting longer than usual as the scanning queues grew. This was due, in part to the higher numbers, but also the sun affecting the scanners. I hope that you took the opportunity to chat with your fellow parkrunners – perhaps you also witnessed the puffing evergreen next to the funnel extension. Conditions must have been just right as every now and then a waft of ‘smoke’ would appear from the bush like a ‘vape cloud’ as it released its pollen into the breeze.

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome back George Dawson. George is our elder statesman, he with the vest that says 80+ please pass. George has been missed over the last few months prompting many concerned discussions, however George had been warm weather training during the winter in both Spain and Portugal, so today would have been no problem as he completed the course in 42.04, slightly slower than his VM80-84 record of 33:25, but as he let on, he’ll soon be starting a new high age group for us VM85-89, which we applaud and look forward too.

A few milestones for us this week. Joining the parkrun 10 club for Juniors this week were Curran MANGAT (23:24 PB), James BRIDGEMAN (32:02) and Madison BAINES (39:27); Bushfield Joggers Aden EDWARDS who usually parkruns at Peterborough also joins the 10 club after completing Thetford. Joining the parkrun 50 club at Peterborough were Brandon HOWARD (23:12) and Neil ARMSTRONG (25:11). Simon James FELL, who has finished first on 7 occasions at Peterborough, including Peterborough parkrun #1, joins the 50 club after completing Rutland Water. Congratulations to you all.

There were 54 participants who were first timers at Peterborough of whom 23 were taking part in their first parkrun. As well as giving a welcome to local runners we also applauded those visiting from places such as Aylesbury, Bristol, Ealing, Huddersfield, Knaresborough, Ranelagh and Wimborne.

There were 95 shiny new PB’s today – well done in such sweltering conditions. There were also 44 Unknown #DFYB.
