Foodbank collection and fast times in icy wind

14th January 2017 Porthcawl parkrun 198 .
We escaped the worst of the winter weather and the high spring tide at 0730 had subsided to leave a clear path . A clear blue sky was accompanied by an icy cold wind and conditons helped 40 of the 292 runners achieve new personal bests including Bridgend based James Hunt first over the line in 15:35, the 4th fastest time on the course ever .
Thanks to all the volunteers who braved the cold today especially the Chapple family from Gnoll who came over to visit after Gnoll was called off and sorted the tokens out for us .
Many thanks to all the runners and volunteers today who donated to Bridgend Foodbank and to Louise Hogan for organising the effort . It was a magnificanet response and will be much appreciated -showing parkrun is more than just a runnig community .

Happy birthday Derek Crowder

Weather was not kind to us with showers arriving as we started and getting heavier in the strong wind but the 230 runners battled their way through with the help of our valiant volunteers. Special congratulations to 11 year old Willow Hughes who joined the 50 club today -while Mum -Clare moved up to top spot in the ladies points table .
First runner home was Kenneth Caulkett from Aberystwth in a time of 17:52 ,while Jess Hegarty, one of our regulars, was first female in 21:35. Surprise was Nigel Bedford starting with everybody else !!!
Our best wishes today to Derek Crowder - one of AAW top officials and a regular volunteer at Porthcawl parkrun who celebrated his 75th birthday by completing his first parkrun . - well done Derek and best wishes from all your fellow volunteers and runners

Sunshine ,celebrations, records and great pacing

A calm sunny day greeted the runners on Porthcawl prom for the 133rd running of the event . As seems to be usually we welcomed a number of tourists from places as varied as Doncaster , Greenock and London and a total of 95 new runners to Porthcawl including several new parkrunners who we hope to see back soon among the 259 runners . At the other end of the scale Sue Wilkins completed her 100th parkrun and we congratulated Lynn Hughes , marshalling today, on the 50th Anniversary of him setting a Welsh 40 mile record , there can't be many national records lasting for over 50 years ! Great to see Lynn helping every week and encouraging newcomers to running . We also passed on birthday wishes to one of our most regualr young female runners , Jess Hegarty Dan Glen led the field home and will be joining 50 club on his next run , with Kate Roberts first female finisher close behind after taking an early lead .
Big thanks to our pacers today at least one of whom helped one of our visitors achieve a parkrun pb even though their home course does not have a hill like ours !
Early warning that Saturday 31st October is Halloween so needing little excuse for a themed run we wil lexpoect lots of even more scary costules than usual on that day

New records by local runners, new milestones and birthdays

The 125th Porthcawl parkrun saw the course record which had previously been held by Simon Jones broken by Bridgend based Cardiff AAC runner Jonathan Hopkins in a time of 15:24 . This followed the previous week when local girl , ex world triathlon champion, Helen Jenkins set a new female course record of 16:40 . Maybe the hill is shrinking ! The conditions were pretty good , heavy rain just before the start eased off and the customary coastal winds had eased . There were 219 finishers , over 450 achieving a pb including a large number of new parkrunners and several visitors . We seem to have over 200 runners every week now and thanks to all the volunteers who make this possible Special congratulations to Nick Harris on his 100th parkrun ( over 70 consecutive currently) and joining the 50 club at opposite ends of the age scale Brian Ford ( v75-79) and Joseph Smith , who has just completed his first year at Cambridge University . Congratulations to them and also to our birthday girls Jenna Horn and regular volunteer Maria Lalic who provided cakes at the registration table .
Congratulations and best wishes also to the new local junior parkrun first event at Bridgend which had an excellent turnout despite the wet weather on Sunday -
