This week the Portobello parkrun reins were handed over to me, Claire Mathieson and my wing woman for the day Elaine Berri. Despite a dull, damp and windy morning, things went smoothly for my first stint as Run Director.
When Ciara first suggested I give the RD role a go way back last summer I instantly said 'no'. That was definitely something I could never do. The thought of being in charge and having to stand and talk to everyone filled me with sheer terror. But after taking a bit of time to consider the idea properly I decided I had nothing to lose by at least giving it a go. And maybe it was the push I needed to get out of my comfort zone and build up my confidence.
I wont lie, being Run Director was one of the scariest things I have ever done, it was emotional, exciting, nerve-racking but most importantly it was fun. It was nice to see parkrun from the RD perspective and to meet and chat to lots of new people. I was told before hand that it's the easiest role of the day and I discovered that this was very true.
I am so glad Ciara gave me the nudge to do this all those months ago and I am very proud at what I have managed to achieve today. The thing that made all the difference was the support, advice and encouragement from the rest of the core team and from my friends at Portobello parkrun.
If you are wondering will I would do it again. The simple answer to that is 'yes', in fact I am already signed up for my next RD stint.
If there is something you have been considering doing this year, I would love to hear what that is and I urge you to just go and give it a go. You may surprise yourself and love what ever it is as much as I have loved this experience today.
I would like to say thank you to every volunteer today. You were all fantastic and made my job nice and easy. You were all so happy, friendly and encouraging and helped to make the morning the success that it was.
