As a frequent visitor to Brighton, and a lover of parkrun tourism, this was my second visit to Preston Park for the parkrun. Glorious running weather of cool, still air and blue skies greeted the 588 runners on Saturday morning. Of course, by the time I arrived, several volunteers had already set out the course, getting the start and finish areas ready and putting the amazing (I am guessing custom made) high viz jackets on the bollards around the route.
The run briefing was listened to by everyone- helped by a team of "shushers" (one of my pet hates is when people do not listen to the run briefing) - it turned out that this was a day for club events with runners from 34 different clubs taking part, including Seaford Striders AC holding a Grand Prix event, Arena 80AC holding an age grading event and Brighton Tri club holding a club event too. There was also Susie's hen party with her friends from Loughborough University. Several volunteers were offering pacing duties and included in the set of times was a run/walk pacer which I think is a fabulous idea and one I shall be passing on to my home parkrun.
The parkrun had such a lovely atmosphere with runners shouting out warnings of "bollards" to each other, with marshals clapping (and clacking) the runners, and even a guy playing Beatles songs on his guitar. As the course is made up of laps of the park (an out and back section, and then two loops), all runners will pass or be passed at some point which meant people were cheering each other along and this added to the encouraging feel of the event. With such an enormous number of runners crossing the finish line, the volunteers were working like clockwork to keep the lines moving in the finish funnel and at the scanners.
Some notable achievements include 91 people getting a pb today including Matthew Noakes JM10 with a new PB of 20:08 which is remarkable for a JM10, Antoine Dani and Richard Scarrott reached their 50th run today - congratulations on joining the 50 club! 83 people ran here for their first time including 27 brand new parkrunners! Welcome to parkrun - your Saturday mornings will never be the same again!
On a personal note, last time I ran here I tried to keep up with the 28 minute pacer, and just about managed it with a time of 27.54. I thought I would try the same thing again, but lost sight of the pacer at the start so just tried to keep a good pace. Imagine my surprise when I achieved a new course pb of 26.47 (the last time I achieved a pb was April last year so it doesn't happen often!).
So, thanks Preston Park parkrun for a lovely start to the weekend - I have no doubt that I will run here on a future visit to Brighton.
