Event 35 - 6th March 2010

A double maiden victory weekend for young athletes from Sutton & District AC

At his 10th attempt finally a triumph for cold-hands Penfold. Alex Penfold, he's the one in the day-glo gloves, won in a time of 18:21. Extra-special for Alex as it was also his best time at Roundshaw Downs by 8 seconds.

We also had a victory in the women's event from debutant Monica Isaac. Monica won in a time of 21.06 - equalling her clubmate Emer Kerr's best time at Roundshaw Downs.

Another youthful event with 22 under 19s we also had 17 first timers. 19 runners recorded PBs, bringing the total number since the Roundshaw Downs started to 473.

It was the week for a number of regulars to get in on the PB act. Micky Wheeler has been waiting the longest, taking 6 seconds off his 26th September time. Well done Micky.

Almost as long a wait, but just as sweet, was Abbie Burrett going under the 25 minute barrier for the first time - taking a full half minute from her time in event 13 on the 10th October.

Douglas Josham has been waiting just a few weeks less - beating his time of the 31st October by 19 seconds.

Congratualtions too to Blanka, James and Sarah - all smashing their previous bests by over a minute.

Sweatshop prize for February

Sweatshop monthly prizewinner for February - Jeannette Ryan

Sweatshop logoCongratulation to Jeannette Ryan who is the winner of this month's Sweatshop prize.

The prize is awarded to the athlete who has shown dedication, as well as consistency or improvement over the month and during their time running the Roundshaw Downs parkrun.

Jeannette is testament to the fact that winning this prize is not just about recent PBs. She has been a real stalwart, part of the tennis-playing Purley Sports Club Mafia, and has run in all - and we mean all - weathers.

Jeannette has run in 27 of our 35 events since her first appearance at our 2nd event on the 25th July. She then proceeded to PB in her next 5 events improving by over 5 minutes from 33.35 to 28.30.

Jeannette then knocked almost another minute and a half off and by event 14 had achieved 27.02. Since then her performances have remained around the 27/28 minute mark and her time of 27.20 in event 33 on the 20th February suggests she's not far off challenging her best time.

Every runner is eligible for the Sweatshop prize, so continue to strive towards your own personal goals, put your hand up to volunteer occasionally and you might just see you name here in the future. We would also like to hear from you if you know of any deserving runners.

We'd like to thank Hugh Brasher of Sweatshop for his generosity and to congratulate Jeannette again on being our February winner. Her prize is a new pair of running shoes fitted at her local Sweatshop.

Event 34 - 27th February 2010

Barcode only from March 6th

Not quite the final reminder to remember your bardcodes next week.

Print a few off, keep one in your bag, one in your glove compartment, one in your wallet/travel pass, meaning you won't even have to keep one in your shorts. Remember you don't even have to run around with it - just collect it before heading to the registration laptop after the event. Sean Gallagher keeps his in a plastic holder for lottery tickets - where do you keep yours? Let us know via roundshawdirector@parkrun.com

We had a run through after the event last week and it is going to save us lots of time and stop our input errors - saving us and parkrun Towers lots of effort.

This week we had 61 finishers, with 19 under 19 years of age - perhaps a number were checking out the Roundshaw Downs course for the London Borough of Sutton's Mini-Marathon trials in a couple of weeks time?

The recent rain made PBs harder to come by but 9 runners deserve contratulations for managing one

Martin Lloyd - 17 seconds
Ben Barry - 43 seconds
Tom Goodrich - 33 seconds
Beth Semikin - 23 seconds
Rhian Davies - 23 seconds
Peter Dry - 21 seconds
Ella Shears - 17 seconds
James Sharp - 10 seconds
Sara Tutton - 18 seconds

In his 5th appearance, Matthew MORGAN (SM30-34) of Striders of Croydon AC won for the 3rd time in a time of 17:48. Alex PENFOLD (JM15-19) representing Sutton & District AC took second by 79 seconds recording 19:07. Tom HOLDEN, (JM14) of South London Harriers placed third in a time of 20:02 on his debut at Roundshaw Downs.

In her 9th appearance, Emer KERR (JW15-19) of Sutton & District AC won for the 9th time in 21:26. Emer beat Beth SEMIKIN (JW15-19) representing Sutton & District AC by 54 seconds recording 22:20. Grace MCDONAGH, (JW15-19) of Sutton & District AC placed third in a time of 22:45.

In today's Age Graded competition, Tom HOLDEN recorded a performance of 74.21%

In the points competition Peter WALSH has a lead of 235 points over second placed Simon DONAGHY. Abbie BURRETT leads Pat WALSH by 81 in the ladies competition.

Special thanks to Justin, Alex, Fran, Katrina and Gabriella - some excellent quotes which capture the essence of parkrun.

We'd also like to thank Katherine Selby for liaising with Your Croydon on this. If anybody has other ideas how we can easily promote the event then please do get in touch.

Barcode Switchover Day - March 6th 2010

 BARCODE SWITCHOVER DAY

6th March 2010

Yet another reminder that we will be introducing barcode registration on Saturday 6th March

From this day Roundshaw Downs will be moving to a Barcode only  registration system. As we only have the one registration laptop this will help our volunteers enormously, reduce the time spent standing in the queue and improve the accuracy of our results..

You will find a link to your barcode in the parkrunner profile section of your weekly parkrun newsletter email  - or at the bottom of your weekly results email. The tips included on this page are repeated below.

If you don't have access to a printer please forward the barcode link to a friend, relative or colleague who does.

We're hoping as many of you as possible will help us out by remembering your barcodes.

We'll also have a final run through of the equipment during our post-event coffee in the McDonalds at the Colonnades this Saturday  - 27th February.

Mick & Nicky - roundshawdirector@parkrun.com

Barcode tips

The best way to print it is by printing the barcode page directly from your browser. The barcode is roughly credit card sized (suitable for slipping into a back pocket). Cut the card out and bring it along with you. If you have any problems, questions or comments, please get in touch with parkrun HQ via office@parkrun.com

Here are some tips that should help to make sure we can read the code:

  • Please do not cut inside the black outline (the space to the left and right of the code is quite important).
  • It is a good idea to laminate the code with plain, thin, untextured film (such as is used to cover text books), to avoid sweat or rain damage.
  • It should be fine to print the barcode with any ink jet or laser printer, but please avoid using draft quality - barcodes printed like that may not be readable.
  • Best results will be achieved by printing onto plain white paper or card.
  • Please do not resize the barcode (either smaller or larger) - if you do, it will not work.
  • We are aware that on some browsers the card is stretched beyond the end of the page. If this happens to you, it should still work - simply cut out the card avoiding the barcode itself.
  • And tips on how to protect your barcode  - http://tinyurl.com/barcodetips - courtesy of Glasgow parkrun
