Snow showdown with the Downs at the Downs- by Tamsyn Down

As challenging running conditions go, today was amongst the greatest at Roundshaw, certainly in my history. Whilst chatting at the start, I accurately predicted that this would definitely not be a PB day. In fact, a fellow runner added- ‘more like PS weather...personal survival.’ In spite of the plethora of multi-coloured layers adorned by most, the ice-cold wind blowing the blizzard, ensured that the run was freezing throughout. At best, I managed an amble, sliding about in a Bambiesque manner, contemplating whether I would be the first person to get frostbite on a parkrun, since my face was numb and the snowflakes appeared to be freezing on my eyelashes. Visibility was poor. Mud factor was high. Puddle sploshing inevitable.

76 brave people ran, jogged or walked the course (+ a few who gave up after 1 lap ED), representing 15 different clubs. Huge admiration to our two first-timers, who courageously chose today’s Artic conditions to complete Roundshaw parkrun: Ellie Fisher who was a total parkrun newcomer and Kat Peterson (A tourist well on her way to 'LonDone' ED). It would be safe to say, that your next visit to us will almost certainly be easier!

Still, we all survived. A huge thank-you to all of the volunteers today, who were exposed to the same bitter conditions, with the added disadvantage of standing still. They were: Martin Lloyd, Rupert Quested, Tim Gray, Annette Helliwell, Michael John Richard Higgins, David Alderson, Rory Macleod, Kirsty Cotton, Marie Gray, Kathryn Ferguson, Florence Tindley, Jenny Macdonnell, Claire Saunders, Nicholas Tanner, Thalia Ferguson, David Franklin and Tamsyn Down (me).

A big congratulations to my lovely husband, Steve Down, on completing his 50th parkrun on such a memorable day. As a person, he is generally of the super-hardy variety (no coat unless it’s minus temperatures) but even he succumbed to Skins on his legs.

Let’s hope that Spring really does arrive soon. Happy running all.
