Happy 9th Birthday Roundshaw Downs parkrun

By Tim Gray & Sarah Tindley

Well happy birthday everyone – and good to see at least a few of the runners from event 1 were present at event 486 – not many in fancy dress on a very hot day, but several Wonder Women, a stray Ninja running boy, and a Super Marshal did make an appearance!

So, Roundshaw Downs parkrun has been going since 2009. The fancy dress theme was Superheroes, but I only spotted three so more publicity needed for next year's 10th!

It was another boiling hot day and near record attendance with the Church Mobmatch on the same day.
We are mainly holding our volunteer awards until event 500 later this year – but we did take a moment to present to Paul Cooper who retired from the Run Director team in the last year. Luckily we still get to see him sometimes, but we wanted to say thank you for all his stirling volunteering with us in the past.

We also had the draw from the Roundshaw London Marathon baggage volunteers – first out of the hat was Shun-Lai Chan – drawn by her daughter! Then also George Curtis. We hope you both enjoy your Marathon – well deserved for all of you who are good enough to help on the baggage.

So a great collection of new people there.

Thanks to Claire who realizing Raya was behind the Tail Walker (having arrived a few minutes late) went out to shepherd her round – the funnel stayed open and another first time parkrunner made it home! Raya says she’ll be back soon and a pb is surely on the cards if she arrives on time!

I’ll say a special thank you to Kieran Lewis who kept me honest up till just over 4k, then shot past me! Qyite a few for the Church mob match, but more of that later. Abigail Adams is of course a very familiar face as a regular barcode scanner – her Dad Ric just ended up behind her the whole way round, and she pipped him to the line!

Quite a few for such a hot day! Excellent work to you all – Ninja Runner Boy ran with our friend Tom Algar – and it was a comfort to me that he took around 30 seconds out of Tom on the last downhill – just like he does to me!

What about the Church mob match? Chiltern Church won by a large majority. Mainly because we brought 43 runners and 3 volunteers – the next biggest club had 11 participants – we put the mob in mob match!

Also taking part were; St Patrick’s Tigers, Springfield Springers, The Salvation Army, Christ Church Purley, Croydon Vineyard, Holy Trinity Wallington, Good Shepherd, Selsdon Baptist, Sutton Christian Centre, Emmanuel Croydon & newcomers Tandridge Deanery – all in all a fine turn out of over 100 runners. There will be a report up on www.churchrunner.co.uk in a week or so.

There was a bring and share; People brought along cake to celebrate with a picnic after the run. Rosa though came ready to feed the 5000 with many welcome rolls and other goodies!

We did break one record though – and quite a nice one as well – most volunteers ever at Roundshaw!
