Roundshaw Downs parkrun event 522 16th March 2019

by Tracy Orchard

Well, that was refreshing! It was a battle with the wind today and conditions were muddy and slippery in parts. However, that said, Spring has sprung on Roundshaw Downs, and the beautiful blossom is starting to come out.

R2

Did I mention the wind?! Extremely well done to the seven runners who managed a pb, even running against the elements.

Congratulations to Jeremy Harris and to Claire Saunders on your 50th parkruns and to Ryan Saunders and Eloise Lachicoree on your Junior 10 milestones.

Also to Eileen Leonard who ran her unofficial but significant 200th parkrun (186 of those here at Roundshaw).

We welcomed 20 runners to Roundshaw Downs for the first time, and tourists were a plenty, coming from varying parts of the country including Clapham, Telford, and Liverpool. Pictured are Jo Brooks from Rickmansworth and Dave Thomas from Oak Hill, and Jo’s puppy Poppy running parkrun for the very first time! We hope you all enjoyed the course.

R3

Who knew (I learn something new every week at Roundshaw!) that once you have completed more than 20 different parkrun events in the UK your name is added to
http://www.parkrun.org.uk/results/mostevents/ and through an unofficial facebook group you can purchase a ‘cow cowl’ to help like minded tourists identify each other? A way to go for me, but I’m working on it!

R4

Happy birthday to Norman! What a great way to start your birthday, running 5K round Roundshaw Downs…. in the wind….

Well done to all who participated at Roundshaw Downs parkrun this week. It’s a tough course, so be proud!

Many thanks to all our volunteers today and every week. We love you and appreciate what you do.

Friendly not Fierce

Roundshaw Downs event 521 9th March 2019

by Tracy Orchard

Well done to all our runners today.

Our resident weather reporters (the cows – who knew there were cows in Croydon?!) were standing up, so we knew we weren’t going to get wet. However rain over recent days meant that the course was a bit damp, muddy and slippery in places.

We welcomed back Ercole Lugari, a former Run Director at Roundshaw. Nice to see you again Ercole. We hope the 17 new visitors to Roundshaw enjoyed the course, especially the tourists who came from as far as Ireland.

Capture.Roundshaw

Numbers were bolstered today by a Mob Match between local clubs Sutton Runners and Collingwood AC. It was a battle between the yellow and the neon. We don’t have official results but turnout from both clubs was fantastic with 23 from Collingwood and 26 from Sutton, and the atmosphere seemed very friendly rather than that of fierce rivals!

Roundshaw photo 1 mob match

Well done to Maggie Swinnerton on an unofficial milestone of completing 150 parkruns. And also to the 13 runners who recorded course pbs.

Thanks to Penny Wilkins and John James for the photos.

And most importantly thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time to put on this great event. Volunteer vests are not yet available for dogs but Harley did his bit today tail walking!

March already?

So well done to all of you at Roundshaw Downs this week – we were away having a Happy and eggciting time at Bromley – but lots of you made it and had by all accounts a good morning.

One little problem week on week is the number of tokens going missing – if you have taken them accidentally, or mistakenly please please give them back, we really do need them and new sets cost money.

Louise Franklin did her 50th this week – and her friend Debra Bryan had something to say about it;

This is where it all began on that crisp November morn.
We were up and at the running g track blasting out a yawn!
The air was cold in the morning sun, but that didn’t stop us, it was our first park run!
Off we went around the track, feet beating on the ground. When usually on a Saturday, on the sofa we would be found!
50 park runs later here we are again, fitter , healthier happier and feeling full of zen! (Although Louise has done 50 and I haven’t even done 10)
Well done Louise on your 50th park run! Now it’s time for a big fry up in reward for the running we’ve just done!

Not official but well done to Steve Collins on his 200th, and Michael Street on his 300th.

For Fog’s sake! Saturday 23rd February 2019

by Riaz

128 runners turned up to Roundshaw Downs wondering where it had gone! They were in right place but with the visibility down to 20 metres they could have been mistaken. The dense fog was going to make for an interesting run especially for any new runners.

There were 9 first timers to Roundshaw Downs with the furthest coming all the way from Crystal Palace!

Rob the Run Director today started with his usual line up of jokes at the pre-run briefing. With a few runners(89) muttering ‘oh just get on with it!’ under their breath.

After 3, they were off and a few seconds later everyone had disappeared into the thick fog.

As the volunteers waited for the runners to approach their first lap we were wondering if they really had got lost as we couldn’t even see half-way up the hill. But soon the first runners appeared.

I was surprised to see the course record holder Kevin Quinn turn up on the results page, but then I realised it was a different Kevin Quinn!

Roundshaw welcomed 12 first timers - Gulcin Erten, Chris Dyke, Rob Halsall, Tugce Erten, Nick Babb, Oltan Eren, Orchun Eren, Gaz Goulding, Gabriella Servini, Gareth Smith, Cora Rich and Sonay Erten.

And there were 16 PB’s! Well done to - Andrew James Lawrence Mcdonald, Stefan Summers, Kevin Quinn, Alex Chappell, James Wright, Olivia Halfacre, Christine O’hara, Niall Mcnevin, Raghav Menon, Adil Bawa, Hannah Brill-Dulley, Abi Clarke, Anne Martin-Burns, Clare Rooms, Pamela Floyd and Steven Hamilton.

The first three male finishers were - Andrew (18.41), Ashley (19.03) and Brandon (20.44)

The first three female finishers were - Gulcin (22.09), Tugce (24.36) and Olivia (25.01)

Thank you to all the organisers and volunteers who make parkrun happen every Saturday at 9am, I can’t imagine life without it now. Imagine having a lie-in on Saturday mornings - depressing! And finally... Roundshaw Rocks!

A bit misty!

by Sarah Tindley

The weather was mild for February but it was overcast so not the sunny conditions I was expecting, given the last couple of days. However there hadn't been much rain so the ground was not as muddy and boggy as the last few weeks. It was quite soft but much better running conditions. It must have been as there were 18 Personal Bests (PBs) out of 151 participants.

There were 11 First Timers and our furthest tourist was from Horsham. Not very far at all really but we hope you enjoyed running at Roundshaw Downs. Also welcome to all the pupils from Wilsons School who ran today. Well done, all of you.

A big well done to Ken Wright on his 350th park run! Ken is a regular at Roundshaw and a well known face. Mike Connaghton has complete 98 runs all at Roundshaw which is unusual, so not long until that celebration.

Thank you to all the Volunteers, including anyone volunteering as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award. We really appreciate your help.

Slipping and Sliding

by Megan Thomas

I have been doing parkrun for around two years now and I have got my junior 10 and 50 parkrun t-shirt. I love the feeling of being part of the parkrun community and around so many amazing people. My favourite part of parkrun is definitely as I am coming to the finish line because I enjoy the amazing feeling that running gives me at the end and I get excited to find out my time. The run might be a bit of a struggle, but the volunteers around the course keep me going especially the hard uphill encouraging me to push harder to the finish.

My family and me got into parkrun through my mums work friend who is definitely a parkrun enthusiast (I feel I should know who this is... ED). We all went along, not knowing what quite to expect. Who knew we would be going every week from there? parkrun is really addictive and I can’t wait to go every week even if it does mean an early morning on a Saturday.

127 people of all ages and abilities came out and took part in parkrun today and thank you to all the volunteers who enabled all of us to participate. A well done to Nicola Bacon who ran her 50th parkrun today and congratulations to the only 5 people today at Roundshaw to get a PB, even in these conditions! Today we had someone all the way from Australia and two first timers. I hope they weren’t put of by the winds and mud! It was very slippery and treacherous out there today, and I witnessed a lot of people slipping and sliding over the course.

Foreigner by Damian Taylor

“You’re sure you want to run a parkrun in this weather?” Was the message from under the duvet

As I left the bedroom this morning. I replied “How bad can it be, it can’t be that bad!”

Cold, wasn’t the word as I stepped out in my shorts. An unusual amount of hair stood to attention

As the air blew into my face as I stepped out onto my road. I was but worried about the levels of

Ice that would be all over the course but, you have to be in it to win it, I thought.

“You’re here to run 5K at Roundshaw. Welcome if you are a visitor or tourist. The marshals are

Willing and dotted around the course, please give them a big cheer as you pass or a wave”.

To of those who set off at a blistering pace, they would have been warmest the quickest. Some

Sacrifice speed for form. Some just go at their own pace and are happy to clock up another parkrun

Our run director stood proudly as lap one became lap two and clapped and encouraged; his

Love of running and parkrun obvious to everyone. The Volunteers did a fabulous job in making sure

You didn’t stray from the course. In these conditions standing outside with a smile and a clap is

Never an easy job.

Take care on lap two as the ground goes from hard mud to soft mud then slippery mud. The

Advice is to slow down and take it easy through the sticky parts. Otherwise you will fall

Someday, maybe not today but someday.

You’ll notice in the results there were 135 positions awarded, 7 new PB’s which in these condition

Pay credit to the runners. 15 first timers to Roundshaw and 3 of those did their first ever parkrun

The brave 3 were Alex CHAPPELL, Pamela LLOYD and Steven HAMILTON. Paying an unusual

Price, this writer hurt his back and didn’t finish. The only one as far as I am aware.

I hope all enjoyed the run and for those not mentioned PB weather is not far away and we all

Know that a PB is all that we are looking for.

Milder Means Muddier by Des Keogh

Milder means muddier when discussing winter parkruns and Saturday adhered to this rule.  The traditional bracing wind for the briefing wasn’t as harsh as usual as we welcomed 7 brave First Timers to our ranks:

 Kajahnan SIVAKUMAR

 Natalie BEARD

 Dhillon PATEL

 Paul SIGNORETTI

 Martin SEAWARD

 Caroline HARRIS

 Simon HARRIS

Tony Gallagher writes... I noticed there were 7 first timers this week at Roundshaw and of those I was delighted to unexpectedly see a friend of mine, Martin Seaward, make his debut parkrun appearance. May this be the first of many. A little birdie also tweeted, or twittered, that our own Run Director Nicholas Tanner ran with some friends of his from St John Fisher some of whom he hadn't run around the Downs with for nearly 20 years.    No parkruns to toddle around then.

and back to Des;

We had 5 Tourists who made their 1st visit to Roundshaw Downs but they were a little shy in coming forward, although one person did admit to being from Orpington:

 Laura RICHARDSON

 Lauren HARRIS

 Andrew JEWELL

 David HOLLOWAY

 Simon WARREN

We had 2 Milestones to celebrate this week both joining the 50 Club.  George CURTIS who has run 40 of his 50 runs at Roundshaw Downs and Luke FOWKES-SMITH who has completed 45 of his 50 runs at Roundshaw Downs.

We thanked the volunteers for being so wonderful and all 173 of us galloped off in search of good footing.  The pinch point through the brambles wasn’t too bad if you stayed to the left, the dog leg-up the hill was tricky if you tried to accelerate and the chicane after the woods provided some comedy moments if you tried to change direction.  But all in all not too bad and that was reflected in the gaggle of PB’s achieved by the following:

Naomi MARTIN - 28:02                    Alex DUNN - 18:16

Jack BONNER - 21:45                       Neil CURTIS - 21:51

Rory NICHOLSON - 17:54               Kevin RALLEY - 24:41

Paul CONNOLLY - 25:37                 Raewynne WHITELEY - 48:28

Samantha KENYON - 31:26  Darren RICHARDSON - 29:01

Chris MANDERS - 26:57                  Christine O'HARA - 29:25

Warren MILLER - 26:58                    Matt TOPE - 27:00

The first finishing male on the day was JM15-17 Rory (run twice, first twice) NICHOLSON  in a PB in 17:54, followed by Alex DUNN with the Holy Grail of PB’s (1 second) in 18:16.  Antony CONSTANTINOU of Chiltern Church Runners completed the podium with a time of 19:26.

Shun-Lai CHAN of Collingwood AC was the first female home in 23:46, followed by  Lindsey TANNER in 25:54 and Claire CHANDLER in 27:12.

No milestones this week, not one, nil, nada – but you were out there running, and that’s what counts.

Over 5 million 3 hundred thousand people have registered with parkrun now, and 2 million of those have never run.

If you make it to 50 runs – there’s about 180, 000 of us there and up, 100+ is a bit under 66,000, 250+ is a bit over 4,500 – and unlike a pb number of runs can be improved just by coming.

If you are new at the moment – just keep coming, stick at it, and enjoy the community and the activity. Also maybe volunteer a bit, because that’s fun as well!

7 Degrees

by Des Keogh

“7 degrees” said the dash display as I parked in Costco and deliberated on how many layers to wear this week.  A chilly wind suddenly arrived as we listened intently to our run director’s announcements and I immediately regretted not wearing gloves.  We welcomed 11 tourists to Roundshaw Downs, some from an exotic destination called Wimbledon.  We hunted in vain for a milestone to celebrate, but even though there was 195 of us none was forthcoming.  We applauded the news that barcode 88 had been returned to take his/her place on the barcode string.  We congratulated the 8 brave First Timers on their inaugural attempt at parkrun and thanked the wonderful volunteers for once again making the event possible.

3-2-1 and into the wind we go in search of a PB.  The conditions underfoot were good to firm and the course was drone and horse free, resulting in 21 personal bests.

The winning male on the day Ashley PATE of Chiltern Church Runners who completed the course in 19:00, followed by Jordan MAURICE of Herne Hill Harriers who ran 19:38 on his first ever parkrun !!  Jonathan JONES completed the podium with a time of 19:45.

First female and 4th overall in 19:54 was JW11-14 Kathleen Mooney of South London Harriers followed by Juliet CLEGHORN of Stragglers who clocked a PB of 21:30.  Anna BARKER obviously enjoyed her first visit to the Downs with a 3rd place and a time of 22:29.

The Groundhog Award of the day went to Aaron MORRELL of South London Harriers who ran 23:52 which incredibly equalled his PB achieved on New Year’s day.  A valuable badge to add to his parkrun collection.

The Close but No Cigar award goes jointly to Chris MANDERS and Warren MILLER who both missed out on their PB by one measly second and finished just one second apart!

Phyllis FLYNN and Declan FLYNN led the way with their respective Age Grades of 79.56% and 71.67% respectively.
