Richard CROSS . Nonsuch
John JONES . Guildford/Tourist

Richard has the elusive Morden Hall parkrun on his events list (only ever run once – so an exclusive club), and John Jones is the wrong spelling for the Martian Manhunter so probably not (but he can shapeshift, so who knows?).

Personal Bests were;

Christine O'HARA 3 mins +
Will TAYLOR About 1 min
Anatoly KUPRIYANOV 2 weeks in a row
Harvey REID Over 1 min
Warren MILLER About 4 mins in 6 runs
Rianna BRIGGS About 2 mins

The event was made possible by 14 volunteers:

Tony GALLAGHER • Nick WHITE • Tim GRAY • Annette HELLIWELL • Pat WALSH • Bob CHART • Des KEOGH • Mary KEOGH • Michael John Richard HIGGINS • Jack BYLES • Sheila DAILY • Toby SHEARLOCK • Ryan MCCARTHY • Eloise ADAMS

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Roundshaw Downs parkrun Results Page.

The male record is held by Kevin QUINN who recorded a time of 15:41 on 13th August 2011 (event number 110).
The female record is held by Clare ELMS who recorded a time of 18:28 on 18th April 2015 (event number 310).
The Age Grade course record is held by Zechariah JOHNSON who recorded 94.07% (21:05) on 7th October 2017 (event number 443).

Roundshaw Downs parkrun started on 18th July 2009. Since then 5,740 participants have completed 52,395 parkruns covering a total distance of 261,975 km, including 7,721 new Personal Bests. A total of 523 individuals have volunteered 6,131 times.

Accidental Pacers this week with dead on 00 times were;

John Cazabon 23.00

Jonathan Sharrock and Jenny Mac Donnell at 27.00

Lindsay Farquar 45.00

A familiar most experienced runner to us, the lovely Maria Lawrence with 438 runs – looks like 500 in 2020 then.

No milestones this week, not one, nil, nada – but you were out there running, and that’s what counts.

Over 5 million 3 hundred thousand people have registered with parkrun now, and 2 million of those have never run.

If you make it to 50 runs – there’s about 180, 000 of us there and up, 100+ is a bit under 66,000, 250+ is a bit over 4,500 – and unlike a pb number of runs can be improved just by coming.

If you are new at the moment – just keep coming, stick at it, and enjoy the community and the activity. Also maybe volunteer a bit, because that’s fun as well!

7 Degrees

by Des Keogh

“7 degrees” said the dash display as I parked in Costco and deliberated on how many layers to wear this week.  A chilly wind suddenly arrived as we listened intently to our run director’s announcements and I immediately regretted not wearing gloves.  We welcomed 11 tourists to Roundshaw Downs, some from an exotic destination called Wimbledon.  We hunted in vain for a milestone to celebrate, but even though there was 195 of us none was forthcoming.  We applauded the news that barcode 88 had been returned to take his/her place on the barcode string.  We congratulated the 8 brave First Timers on their inaugural attempt at parkrun and thanked the wonderful volunteers for once again making the event possible.

3-2-1 and into the wind we go in search of a PB.  The conditions underfoot were good to firm and the course was drone and horse free, resulting in 21 personal bests.

The winning male on the day Ashley PATE of Chiltern Church Runners who completed the course in 19:00, followed by Jordan MAURICE of Herne Hill Harriers who ran 19:38 on his first ever parkrun !!  Jonathan JONES completed the podium with a time of 19:45.

First female and 4th overall in 19:54 was JW11-14 Kathleen Mooney of South London Harriers followed by Juliet CLEGHORN of Stragglers who clocked a PB of 21:30.  Anna BARKER obviously enjoyed her first visit to the Downs with a 3rd place and a time of 22:29.

The Groundhog Award of the day went to Aaron MORRELL of South London Harriers who ran 23:52 which incredibly equalled his PB achieved on New Year’s day.  A valuable badge to add to his parkrun collection.

The Close but No Cigar award goes jointly to Chris MANDERS and Warren MILLER who both missed out on their PB by one measly second and finished just one second apart!

Phyllis FLYNN and Declan FLYNN led the way with their respective Age Grades of 79.56% and 71.67% respectively.

My 5th parkrun birthday!

by Claire
.
163 runners braved the chilly Downs this morning, however the dry weather this week meant that even with the extra footfall from the New Year's Day run the conditions underfoot were good. Certainly better than they were five years ago this weekend. How do I recall that? 4th January 2014 was my very first parkrun and I remember squelching my way through the mud attempting to jog / walk 5km for the first time in years and wondering how anyone was managing to stay upright let alone run. If you look back at photos from the New Year's Day run in 2014, a few days before, that will give you a clue as to the conditions.
.
.
Looking at the results from event 241 suggests that Abby St John, Ian St John, Alex Helliwell, John Helliwell, Amanda Curtis,  Christopher Curtis, George Curtis, Andrew McDonald,Robin McDonald, Joe Victor,  Karen Chart, Kirsty Cotton and Warren Robertson weren't put off by the mud that day either as they all ran on 04/01/14 and were at Roundshaw again today five years later!
.
The stalwart volunteers of Annette Helliwell, Helen Elderfield, Eileen Leonard, Martin Lloyd and Pat Walsh all volunteered that day and again today, and Michael Higgins, Peter Walsh and Jack Byles ran back in 2014 and volunteered today.  Thank you so much to all the volunteers who stand in all weathers to help us get our parkrun fix every week. If you haven't volunteered before, why not make a new year resolution to give it a try in 2019?
.
Talking of possible new year resolutions, I wonder if that's what brought our 9 brand new to parkrun first timers to Roundshaw today.  Welcome to the parkrun family Jason Hughes, Matthew Hughes, Anatoly Kupriyanov, Benjamin Tranter, Aimée Couch, Jasmine Woghiren, Anna Colette Duffy, Samantha Kenyon and Anne Martin-Burns.  Was  there anything memorable from your first parkrun today that you will write about in a run report in five years time?
.
I obviously didn't like the mud much as it was another month before I came back for my second run. Well done to Charlotte Duncan and  Abi Clarke (running their second parkrun this week after completing Roundshaw on NYD), Debs Carter (back after an 8 year break!), Ritchie Stace (one run at Riddlesdown) and Heather Fogg and John Sibley (one run each at Southampton) on completing your 'difficult second' parkrun.
.
It wasn't until April 2014 (must have been the improving weather!) that my parkrun addiction started though, so much so that I've rarely missed a parkrun since, and my trusty barcode has accompanied me to new and exciting places all over the country and the world. Welcome to Lewis Marshall (Whitstable), Melvyn Stringer (Maidstone), David Mason (Chelmsford Central), Sam Liu (Reading), Andrew Ely (Cleethorpes), Jason Brown and Kirsty Brown (Nonsuch), whose barcodes brought them to Roundshaw for the first time from near and far. And to the three unknowns today, register online and don't forget to bring your printed barcode every time.
.
While Lewis was visiting us from Whitstable today, take a look back at the news from 5 years ago...  what a coincidence... there's a review of Whitstable parkrun from super tourist Nikki Tarrant and a Whitstable parkrunner had written about the Lloyd / Roundshaw NYDD.   http://www.parkrun.org.uk/roundshaw/news/2014/01/04/event-number-241-4th-january-2014/
.
As noted in that run report, such were the conditions five years ago that not a single PB was achieved. Today saw a massive 20 PBs in comparison, well done to Clare Rooms, Abi Clarke, Debs Carter, Angela Liu, Cookie Liu, Isabelle Crotty, Matt Newell, Kerry Hill, Michael Potter, Avone Keene, Claire Chandler, Bethany Adams, Kathryn Evans, Jemima Potter, Neil Curtis, David White, Timothy Colpus, Aaron Gillett, Jon Bridges and Henry Le Jeune.
.
As well as the unofficial milestone of my 5th parkrun birthday, there were two official milestones to celebrate today, congratulations to Akila Weerakkody on completing his 50th run today and Oluremi Johnson on completing her 100th parkrun.
.
Thank you so much parkrun for five fabulous years, and here's to many more!
.

A somewhat last minute double

Roundshaw Down parkrun #number 511
1st January 2019

On turning up at the start line, rather last minute.com as we had hot footed it from Riddlesdown, the first part of our New Year Day double, we found a cheery band of volunteers, who were massing and being briefed as to their duties which lifted our spirits as they do each parkrun morning, especially as overhead the skies were grey and heavy. The parkrun fairies were kind to us today and gave us cooler conditions, which provided the perfect opportunity to talk to others before we started (Lloyd 89 and Riddlesdown 43 courtesy of the parkrun statsgeek group), there was certainly a lot of chatter as to which parkrun, if any we had all done. Now where did I put my gloves?

Thank you Toby, today's RD, for the runner's briefing where runners were warmly welcomed and introduced to the course layout. This type of course provides lots of opportunities for the faster runners to overtake and to receive and indeed give encouragement as they whipped past us slower mortals. This course gives perfect opportunity for some fast times and certainly some PB opportunities arose I am sure. I can see more challenge to this course when cooler and wetter conditions set in as I reckon the grass underfoot could bring on that special parkrun mud, which was already starting to appear.

There were quite a few seasoned tourists at Roundshaw Downs today which allowed the perfect opportunity to catch up on where we had been recently and where we had come from that morning, as it was the New Year Double, where athletes attempt to complete two parkruns, at their normal venues but at slightly adjusted times in order that it is possible. Today, tourists from the other local running groups and Havant parkrun were using Roundshaw Downs parkrun as their tourist venue.

Toby gave a big thank you to the volunteers who gave up their time to ensure that we were able to run this morning. There were certainly a happy band of Marshalls out on the extremely well marked out course, all supporting by giving encouragement and clapping. Don't forget if you are unable to run, have a race coming up or are just generally a good egg, then volunteering is a great way to give back to the parkrun community. Head over to the Roundshaw Downs parkrun webpage for details of the next few weeks roster and sign up for a position that suits you- you get to wear a hi-vis jacket! -what more incentive do you want?

First timers, as mentioned above, are always warmly welcomed and are on the start of their parkrun journey and working towards their first milestones.

Lindsey CAIRNS First Timer! 1
Lynda BYFIELD First Timer! 1
Abi CLARKE First Timer! 1
Charlotte DUNCAN First Timer! 1

The trick is when working towards your milestones is #DFYB- Don't Forget Your Barcode! Only 1 of you was listed as unknown runners this morning. That's one run less to count towards those milestone tees.

We're you celebrating a special milestone this week?

Ed - Not as such this week – but former Run Director Ercole Lugari was back visiting, and got his 249th with us – so a big milestone next parkrun. Also David Alderson did his 250th Roundshaw Downs run today, having done his 50th Lloyd just before. Last but not least it was Andy Crossley’s 100th Roundshaw parkrun as well.

That's the great thing about parkrun isn't it, that each person has their own individual journey to talk and share about. Especially pertinent though to also remember to hand in your finish token, parkrun needs them for next week as they unfortunately are not a souvenir, medal or indeed your own version of Bingo!

Carrying Extra Weight?

By Tim Gray (Chiltern Church Runners & Collingwood AC)

Yes I could be talking about your Christmas dinner – but actually I hear from those who were at Roundshaw that the mud was very sticky, and by the end of lap the trail shoes weighed much more as they became clogged up! We missed that fun as we were at Dulwich this week – witnessing (briefly) Alexander Yee’s amazing 13.57 run – the second fastest parkrun ever! Sue and my daughter actually got to see him twice, Dulwich is a 3 lap course, and he lapped them twice before they finished lap one!

Other National milestones included Darren Wood being the first person ever to hit 700 parkruns, and a record Bushy Christmas day turnout of 2011 people – not including the funnel duckers who were not prepared to wait in the long queues!

At Roundshaw there were also some milestones;

Theo RATNAYAKE achieved his junior 10.

Timothy CLARKE made it to his 50.

And unofficial but worth a mention - Amanda CURTIS made it to 300 (Spartan run!)

Well done to all of you.

Brand new starters to parkun were;

Excellent work in what sounds like tricky conditions.

Don’t forget we are back on New Year’s day at ‘10’ish’ to allow you the chance for an extra parkrun (or 2 if you double – Lloyd and Riddlesdown are both apparently on at 9 am). Consider your parking carefully – Costco is closed so the car park may be as well – walking across from the Colonnades  may be another option as the access road often gets quite crowded.

And now the stats;

Another great parkrun Christmas

by Tim Gray Chiltern Church Runners & Collingwood AC

Well Roundshaw was a delight to be at on Christmas day, good weather, good ground conditions, and good friends. I will say the runner who was unwell before the run got in touch later in the day - feeling better - so good news.

A massive thank you to the volunteers today – especially Annette fitting results processing into her Christmas dinner cook time!

We had a good turn out – but Bushy was amazing, 2011 runners, a new course record, and the biggest ever UK attendance at a parkrun (South Africa does get bigger ones!). Nationally Christmas day numbers were up.

Whilst I hope you all enjoyed your runs, I’ll mention those pb’s and first timers

Will OBENEY
James WRIGHT Chiltern Church Runners
Kate GREEN Epsom Allsorts

A very Merry Christmas to you – and if you think you were obsessive coming to parkrun on Christmas day, then just to say well done to Nikki Tarrant, Mole Valley parkrun on Christmas day & then a flight from Luton to catch a plane to Poland – where there is an extra parkrun on Boxing Day, and she did parkrun Gdansk Poludnie – double parkrun for Christmas.

A few special mentions for Samantha PURSER who hit her 50th parkrun today, also John CAZABON who made it to 100 parkruns, not official but Mark OSLAND who made it to 150, and again unofficial but one of our most loyal tailwalkers Yasin IQBAL who hit 200.

Remember we are back on the 29th, but also bonus run on the first - 10'ish for those who wish to double with another run first at 9.

Now for the stats;

Roundshaw Downs parkrun started on 18th July 2009. Since then 5,630 participants have completed 51,473 parkruns covering a total distance of 257,365 km, including 7,628 new Personal Bests. A total of 517 individuals have volunteered 6,043 times.

Roundshaw parkrun – Milestones galore!

by Tim Gray

Chiltern Church Runners & Collingwood AC

A big week for some runners, especially Rosa Constantinou  who brought up her 250th run this week. Sorry I missed it Rosa. Rosa has run 213 of those with us at Roundshaw – and is also edging very close to her Volunteer 25 t shirt as well – well done Rosa (she also speaks 4 languages you know).

We also had a pair of  100’s  up – Cheryl Campion (28 runs with us – and a UK tourist) & Seymour Johnson (24 runs with us – many more at Lloyd, maybe on holiday from the hill!).

Another milestone was a 50 up for Rahul Menon – who also pb’d! And there was a junior 10 for Tabitha Welsh. All in all a busy week.

A few PB’s despite the conditions;

Of these only Ethan was running his first ever parkrun – well done sir.

Cowell club members (over 100 events) were Anwen (124 events) and tourists include  Vin (41 events) & Dawn (40 events). The reason I missed today – I was doing my Cowell event (long planned) at Dinton Pastures in Reading, with Ninja Runner Boy along as well.

Remember there’s an extra parkrun on Christmas Day at 9am – come and join the fun, all welcome.

A Spectator’s View

Today was a very cold day, it was so cold my feet were really, really, numb - at least if you were running you were warmer (we hope). The volunteers were very helpful with every single job, and did well in the cold. A special thank you to Sheila who came in a wheelchair after hurting herself, to do the scanning.

There were a lot of young runners, some came near the top, some near the bottom, but well done all. The three who came with Winifred we hope you will come back when you have barcodes and get your names in the results.

There were some milestones. One ‘one hundred’ - Rotimi Oyengunle - well done. And a very loyal person (219 runs at Roundshaw) is Jonathan Sharrock doing his 250 - very well done.

We had drinks after at the Pavilion cafe in Mellows park which was good.

Roundshaw is on next week as usual, then Christmas Day at 9.

Bye for now,

Matthew

9 Roundshaw Runners on tour – plenty left at home.

by Tim Gray (Chiltern Church Runners & Collingwood AC)

Let's start at home - and |Tom Higgs put in his 58th first finish of 240 runs, only 7 more to overtake Neil Reissland (presuming he doesn't pop by and add some more to his tally).

Only 3 PB's today;

Claire Chandler, Amanda Francis & Carol Johnson - all with less than 20 runs at Roundshaw, though Claire has 18 - so a tough day to get a personal best - well done on achieving it.

Not one brand new runner - nil - zero - zip. So bring your friend(s) next week!

Some Visitors though;

Nick Chick of Brighton and Hove, Steven Rudland of Wimbledon Common, Mark Brown of Preston park Brighton, Kerry Hill of Finsbury park and Matt Newell of Lloyd. Welcome all.

None of them tourists though, why not? Probably the huge tourist gathering at Wendover Woods a 'mini Cowfest' of Cow Cowells, news of which can be found here for those interested;

http://www.parkrun.org.uk/wendoverwoods/news/2018/12/09/event-12-its-a-wendover-woods-record-attendance/

We had a lot of fun - and an awful lot of cake! Fully 9 of those runners called, or still call, Roundshaw home - some of us will be back next week, others will keep on touring.

Celebrating back at Roundshaw were two fab Centurions hitting 100 runs this week;

Glen Smith and Robert Allum - great work, and Glen Ninja Runner Boy asked me to send you a special well done!

And now the stats;

Intrepid, or slightly mad?

It was testament to the community spirit and / or the addictive nature of parkrun that 106 intrepid (or slightly mad) runners turned up today in very wet conditions to complete a sloshy muddy course after a night of heavy rain.

Particular congratulations to Sean Gossmann who completed his very first parkrun today.  What a day to choose and we hope that despite the weather you will be hooked like the rest of us and will get the chance to join lots of dry and sunny parkruns in the future.

Welcome also to Bruce Nainby and James  Walker both visiting Roundshaw for the first time. I see you have done many parkruns in the surrounding area and we hope you’ll  come back again and enjoy Roundhsaw in all its seasons.

There were a good number of PBs in spite of the conditions, many from 2nd or 3rd time visitors to Roundshaw. Well done to Jack Burton, David White, Alex Dunn, Ben Gillham, Susan MacDonald, Lynda Cameron and Karen Harrower.

Several milestones were achieved this week. Congratulations Sun-Lai Chan on your 100th parkrun and Laila Morrell on your 50th. Also well done to Pat Walsh and Robin MacDonald who have both clocked up an impressive 300 runs.

Hope the washing machines are coping with all the muddy gear.
