Event Number 291 – A Tourist Eye View

Seems that June 9th must be romantic one for Run Directors as am reliably informed that one of our regular directors got married today and it also coincided with the wedding anniversary of today’s director. Not to be outdone I said that the reason for my tourism was that I had brought my wife to Sheringham to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary which is also today.
Our proud expectant mum on token duty told me that her midwife had got herself a PB today on parkrun NHS celebration day. I asked if we had any more NHS people and she confirmed that as a Pharmacist she felt in celebratory mood but neither she nor the other volunteers were aware of any others taking part today. All we knew was a VIP from the volunteering team was a Doctor and as shown above his reason for missing was getting married.
As one who mainly runs at my home run of Peterborough am amazed that each time I venture on a visit to another parkrun I meet someone from there. This time it was Dave Richmond and family from Eye. Dave has often been a Run Director at our parkrun but like me was on a visit to the coast and dropped in for a run.
To me the whole concept of parkrun is brilliant and unlike my days as a youngster who tended to just turn up and go I now welcome the opportunity to give a bit back and volunteer as these runs are based on such support. Am a little selfish in as much I tend to take the roles that allow you to both run and volunteer but with today’s effort as just a report writer have achieved 175 separate days of volunteering out of the 249 I have run. However I raise my hat to all those who go the extra mile and forgo a run to perform the essential tasks that enable the run to take place. Some to my knowledge always volunteer and never actually run which is incredible dedication and celebrated by all us runners and walkers.
We had 28 first timers today and one of these Evie Coghill JW10 reached the 10 milestone and 4 others were doing their first ever parkrun. Hope you enjoyed the experience and will come back again soon.
18 people got a brand new PB but I noted a very exceptional performance with Harvey Shaw JM10 lowering his time to 20.03 as he crossed the line in third place for North Norfolk Harriers AC. definitely one to watch for the future.
There were another couple of milestones today with the ‘official’ 50 achieved by Hilary Bell and the ‘unofficial’ 200 achieved by Jon Aylward. Am keeping my own fingers crossed for next week back at Peterborough when I hope to achieve the 250? Was a little envious of Simon Burton Pye who was doing his 251st here today.
On the age graded sort only one athlete got over 70% and that was the 81.55% gained by young Harvey Shaw. The nearest others were Susan Holmes with 69.85% and also a new PB of 28.35, then Gary Linder with 68.95%.
In the run itself I was saddened to see that second over the line we had an Unknown runner. Throughout the 165 participants were a total of 8 who will have no record of the days run and reminds all #DFYB.
So first over the line today was Finlay Swanson of North Norfolk Harriers AC for the 14th time at this event with Harvey Shaw coming in third. The first of the ladies was Emily Haughan of North Norfolk Beach Runners in 20th position overall, second was Mandy Jonas in 25th position overall with third only a second behind Fiona Hill
A recent initiative on the results page is the publication of those who have received the purple 25 volunteering milestone tee-shirt. It was interesting to see that of the 165 participants’ today 12have achieved this. A breakdown of this shows 11 also have a 100 vest 1 also have a 50. Unfortunately this statistic does not show the full story as we are not aware how many of the volunteers manning tasks that don’t allow a run as well have also achieved this superb level of event support.
If you too would like to help then please email sheringhamhelpers@parkrun.com, or check out the. If you’re not sure what positions are available then you can check the roster on http://www.parkrun.org.uk/sheringham/futureroster/ for up to 4 weeks in advance. Let’s see if we can fill up some of those spaces nice and early.
Peter
