Southampton Magic Mile

On Monday 10th September, we held our Magic Mile event. This was in association with Marathon Talk with the aim of getting participants to run a mile as quickly as they could and then register their time via the Marathon Talk website as a GB runner and collate all the results to prove that Team GB can beat the rest of the world. To ensure you represent your country, please register at http://www.marathontalk.com/challenges/magic_mile.php and enter your mile time.

Given an incredible summer of sport during both the Olympics and Paralympics, it was clear that plenty of runners wanted to follow in the footsteps of Jessica Ennis, David Weir, Mo Farah, Jonnie Peacock and all the other athletes that made usproud during July and August.

We were very grateful to ActiveNation for allowing us free use of the track at Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre and for many, this was their first opportunity to run on a track.

As with previous mile events, we held several 'races' during the evening. These included sub-7 minutes, sub 8 minutes and then those expecting to take longer than 8 minutes. This gave us the opportunity to ensure that the track wasn't too crowded, give plenty of support for runners and for those that weren't running to volunteer.

Many thanks as always to all the volunteers on the night. These included:

  • Ben Pitman
  • Kirsty Ware-Lane
  • Laure Van Den Broek
  • Tamsyn Smith
  • Stuart Smith
  • Dave Williams
  • Peat Allan
  • Isla Allan
  • Alice Jones
  • Irene Moreno Millan
  • Rhiannon Nicolson
  • Rex Toop

Apologies if I've missed anyone.

Active Nation kindly let us use the track for free as we were accepting donations for the local charity, Two Saints who offer 'brighter futures for homeless people'. This is one of the charities that the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Derek Burke, officially supports. We are very grateful to all of those who donated and are pleased to announce that we raised a grand total of £110 on the evening.

In total, we had 58 known runners take part (these runners had parkrun barcodes). Many other 'unknown' runners took part and we anticipate a total of approximately 80 participants in total. Many thanks again to all that took part and all of those that volunteered.
