What we do

Wimbledon Common parkrun is a FREE weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 9am in Wimbledon Common.

It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan.

It offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. We want to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE!

Taking part is easy – just register before your first ever parkrun. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there!

After the run, if you don’t have to get off straight away, there will be the chance to socialise with everyone at the Café to maybe swap stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running community.

So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come along and join us.

History

Wimbledon Common parkrun was Jim Desmond’s brain child! Bushy Park was going so well, the feedback from the runners was so encouraging and we had seen so many people come into the sport and achieve such incredible feats through the event that we were left wondering where we should go next.

It seemed obvious to us that we needed to create another event. The difficulty was, how would we run this with such limited resources? We are all fully employed individuals and the time we spend enriching and managing Bushy parkrun is sufficient to say that it’s more than a hobby. How could we add another event without this becoming a burden?

Jim came up with the original idea, discussed it with the committee and we went off to measure the course. After a number of attempts, we settled on a 5km course. We approached a number of local clubs and received tremendous support from them. We then needed to get permission from the rangers and conservators.

The Wimbledon and Putney Conservators and Rangers have been brilliant. They have worked with us to understand our motives and objectives and we have arrived at a good compromise for the future. We will constantly review the effect on the park and its other users, especially the use of the car park and the effect of the runners on the paths trees and shrubs and the effect we have on the regular users.

Having said all this, I firmly believe we are a force for good that will benefit everyone and I predict we are here to stay.
