Winchester parkrun #14 run report (27 July 2013)

Winchester parkrun #14 had a distinctly youthful feel about it. This Saturday was the first of seven special volunteer events, run by parkrun UK in collaboration with the Join In initiative. We're aiming to encourage people who've never volunteered before to give it a go, by focusing on a different group of parkrunners each week. There's more about the upcoming weeks further down this run report. Today, the theme was junior parkrunners, and we're pleased to say that the young people of Winchester did not let us down! We had 12 juniors emailing to offer their services during the week, and even more turning up on the day to help out. With an average age of 8 ¾, our junior team took on timekeeping, handing out position tokens, marshalling, scanning tokens and barcodes, and recording the details when barcodes wouldn't scan. They all did a fantastic job, so thanks to them all (and their accompanying parents). We were particularly pleased to see two entire families helping out - thank you to the Wilsons and the Porters.

After using course B last week, we went back to the original course A layout this week. A turnout of 139 runners included 28 first-timers - welcome to you all. 25 runners achieved PBs despite the warm weather, so well done. We were also pleased to hear that Tricia Meads, a regular at Winchester parkrun, ran her 50th parkrun today in another location. Congratulations Tricia, and we look forward to presenting you with your well-earned T-shirt soon!

So, the next six weeks continue the theme of volunteering. We'll be looking for the following groups of parkrunners to come forward and volunteer:

  • August 3rd - 10, 50, 100 & 250 club members (juniors accompanied by an adult)
  • August 10th - male parkrunners
  • August 17th - female parkrunners
  • August 24th - faster parkrunners (those with an age grade over 70%)
  • August 31st - families
  • September 7th - people who’ve never been to a parkrun before

If you fit into one (or more!) of these categories and want to volunteer, please email winchesterhelpers@parkrun.com stating the week you'd like to help out.

Another sunny parkrun

Anticipating another warm, if not hot, parkrun this week; we opted for our original ‘route A’ in the hope that the additional shade along the river might help to keep runners cool, or cooler at least!

It was a very successful paced event offering odd minutes from 19 up to 29. A massive thank you goes to all our volunteers – including those who took on the responsibility of pacing at the last minute.

We had many positive comments from those who had used the pacers to secure a PB this week – in all, over one third of the field managed to better their previous times.

The stats are included below but, as we are one quarter of a year old it is worth reflecting on what has been achieved so far:

844 different runners have recorded 550 new personal bests during the 10215km that have been covered – well done to everyone who has contributed to those statistics in any way over recent months.

There are many great photos from today (thanks Malcolm) which can be found at the link below

Don’t forget that next week is a junior volunteers event. We would like to encourage as many juniors as possible to get involved. Please do volunteer if you are able to help (junior, senior or veteran) – email winchesterhelpers@parkrun.com

Winchester parkrun – Event number 12 (13th July 2013) – The Run Report and Stats

The hottest day of the year…

Just remember Winchester parkrun #12 when you are scraping autumn mud off your spikes or chipping winter ice off your trail trainers!

Given the temperatures this morning we should perhaps have followed Camp Bastion parkrun’s start time of 6.30am but Winchester runners are made of stronger and more resilient stuff than that!

Following the success of route B last week, we put it to the facebook vote and it was decided that it was route B again this week. 147 runners took to the park for a weekend warm-up (or heat up!). As always the runners were great and the volunteers were fantastic!

Next week we have a paced run with odd minutes from 19 upwards. If you are able to volunteer (either as a pacer, marshal, timer, scanner,…) please get in touch by emailing winchesterhelpers@parkrun.com. It will be the week that sees us completing over 2000 winchester parkruns, covering over 10,000km

Winchester parkrun – Event number 11 (6th July 2013) – The Run Report and Stats

Wednesday 2 o’clock:

Ring-ring, ring-ring “Hi, just phoning to let you know that North Walls playing field is beginning to fill up with Hat Fair performers who are camping over the weekend”. No,  we’ve only held 10 parkruns and  there’s a spanner in the works already. Back to the drawing board then, or at least back to google maps to work out an alternative route.

Saturday parkrun o’clock:

Despite stiff competition from The Hat Fair, Southampton’s first anniversary (congratulations!), Lions rugby, Murray-mania and the temptation of lazing in sun-soaked gardens; 123 runners tested out course B this morning.

Following Sam, who offered to ‘blast’ round the first lap so everyone knew where they were going, the field was its usual mix of ages and abilities including 31 first timers and 17 who recorded personal bests.

All of the comments about route B seemed to be positive. Will it be route A or route B next week?
It’s up to you (vote on facebook this week)

Thank you to all our volunteers who made this, and every, parkrun possible. Don’t forget to volunteer if you can over the next few weeks. Email Winchesterhelpers@parkrun.com
