Aber parkrun event 403

4th September 2021

This week, on a lovely sunny morning,114 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 17 were first timers and 15 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 10 different clubs took part. We had several visitors from other parkruns, and we need to say happy birthday to Johanna from Derby.

Nic Herriot was running as part of a world record breaking attempt on the most people to run a remote 5km in 24 hours - if you want to join in this belatedly, you're too late for the tshirt and medal, but you can upload your evidence from your tracking app here: https://m.facebook.com/events/919576681941860/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A%5B%7B%22mechanism%22%3A%22search_results%22%2C%22surface%22%3A%22search%22%7D%5D%2C%22ref_notif_type%22%3Anull%7D

It's also interesting to hear via Facebook that Karen Penny, a parkrunner from Newport, who joined us here in June 2019, has now reached her target of £100,000 raised for dementia research. She still has a few weeks to go before finishing her epic trek around the coasts of Britain and Ireland in Aberdeen. Karen has been including as many park runs as possible on her walk. You can find her on Facebook at Karen Penny The Penny Rolls On Walking Britain and Ireland.

The event was made possible by 17 volunteers:

Dave THOMAS • Deian CREUNANT • Nick THOMPSON • David HOPPER • Sarah PURDON • David DOWSETT • Damian SIDNELL • Emily FOOT • Alison GARROD • Lucy KEMISH • Jade GAITELY • Amanda EVANS • Linda PAASMAN • Sarah GWENLAN • Chris RICHARDS • Brian GARROD • Marion THOMSON

The Age Grade course record is held by Anita WORTHING who recorded 88.72% (21:52) on 10th December 2016 (event number 225).

Finally, we’re back!

Aberystwyth parkrun: Event number 401

21st August 2021

This morning, for the first time since March 14th 2020, Aberystwyth Parkrun happened!

152 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 40 were first timers and 13 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 30 different clubs took part, and 18 volunteers got very, very, very wet indeed.

The run director, Nick, welcomed everyone to Plascrug park and highlighted a few changes to the Parkrun procedures as a result of the COVID shutdown (please try to stay 2m distant, please carry your barcode, please don't throw your jumpers at the volunteers, no hi-5s or spitting...). He also pointed out the weather and explained it was probably "not a good day for a personal best", given the conditions.

It turns out that our first finisher Ollie Thorogood wasn't paying attention to that thing about "not a good day for a PB" as he crossed the line in 16:10 - his fastest Parkrun time. Well done Ollie!  Our first woman across the line was Maggie Collingborn running her 199th Parkrun in a very respectable 22:55.

Well done too to the other PBs this morning: Rhys Jeremiah, Daniel Clemson, Karen Kemish, Trystan Roberts, Dave Humphreys, Wendy James, Anthony Scarth, Joseph Jones, Richard William Kirk, Brian Garrod, Vikki Foale, and Jennie Thomas.

A very special mention has to go to Aber AC's own Danny Thorogood, who completed this morning's Parkrun in 24:33 just over 3 months into recovery from a stroke. It was great to see Danny not only well enough to join the start line of our first Parkrun after lockdown, but also well enough to run the whole way pretty fast!

Tail walkers

Tail walkers

After the tail walkers (Lionel, Nicky and Sue) crossed the line the event was packed up and people reconvened in the Rugby Club for breakfast, and also to thank our outgoing Event Director Anita Worthing. Anita was instrumental in getting Aberystwyth Parkrun set up in the first place and has been our Event Director for years; she decided to hand over the reins to Em Foot with support from Nick Thompson. Here's Anita with some flowers this morning, to say thanks for all the work she's put in (she's still a run director though so you'll see her around).

On the volunteer side, it is safe to say that the conditions proved challenging for a volunteer team who were somewhat out of practice and also dealing with new procedures and technology.

Part of the post-COVID routine involves volunteers using their own phones for timekeeping and scanning, and one thing that is hard to use in a torrential downpour is a smartphone (even if it is in a waterproof case). One of the scanners had a problem with the app, and the timekeepers between them managed to record everyone but no one timekeeper got it 100% right. This meant we needed to drop back to that other not-particularly-waterproof technology: pen and paper!

Results processing

Results processing

So some of the times might be a little adrift from where they should have been, and our run directors had a job on their hands and had to do some spreadsheet wrangling to turn paper records and partial timings into a bunch of results.

Results processing in the rain? Easy!

Results processing in the rain? Easy!

The run directors also have the additional job of trying to ensure the kit's dry for next week... here's hoping that Wales gives us a little sunshine between now and then so the hi-viz can dry out.

Aber parkrun’s 400th event!

Aberystwyth parkrun
Event number 400
14th March 2020

What a wonderfully sunny morning it was to celebrate the 400th parkrun event at Aberystwyth!

Thank you this morning for coming out and celebrating with us, and thank you for all the wonderful donations of food for the Jubilee Storehouse foodbank
( https://www.facebook.com/JubileeStorehouse/ ).

Unfortunately, in all the excitement I forgot to take a photo of the boxes and bags full of tins, packets and all sorts of food that will be needed within our local community, but there was lots, and looked great piled up on and around the bench at the end of this morning's event.

Unfortunately, one of the scans didn't read the owner's barcode, and so we do not know who was in position 71. If you know this was you (in a time of between 28m21 and 28m39s, please would you let me know your full name and barcode, so I can add you into the results table?

Here are a couple of the photos I did take of our fantastic finishing area volunteers!

There was also a very nice blue Sistema water bottle left on the bench. If this is yours, please let us know; it is in safe storage in the trolley with the other parkrun equipment!

Event no.399

After the wind and rain of the last few parkruns thankfully this week conditions were not so bad for the 137 runners and walkers that made it around the Plas Crug 5k course today. Thanks, as always, go to the volunteers that made today's run possible and also to James Farmer who not only volunteered as the Token Sorter but also supplied cookies to celebrate his 300th parkrun.

Leap Day parkrun 2020, Aberystwyth event 398

I am sure we are all very relieved that the hail held off until after the results were processed. While parkrun was happening the sun shone brightly, even if the breeze was chilly. Well done everyone on avoiding the puddle encroaching a little onto the path by the play area.
This week we had several visitors thanks to the visiting day at the university, and also some flood and waterlogging refugees from other parkruns  that had to cancel.

Congratulations to Alex on completing his 50th parkrun and thanks for the cakes.

Tomorrow regular park runner Ruth Flatman  is hosting the St David’s Day Cake-a-thon at St Paul’s Methodist Centre (corner of Bath St and Queens Rd), 3-5pm. This afternoon tea will celebrate Ruth qualifying to represent Team GB in the World Triathlon Championships in Canada this August. Come and eat cake; small donations towards the cost of the GB trisuit are appreciated.

Run report for our 397th parkrun in Aberystwyth

Thanks to Lisa Nicholls of Riverfront Parkrun, Newport for visiting us this morning and also writing this run report!

At today's event #397, 121 people took part, 18 of which were first timers. Of all the runners the highest age grade goes to Balazs with 77.16%, he also came in as the 3rd finisher.

Some interesting facts about some of todays runners:

Gwion who was the first finisher, visited from Dolgellau, Adam who was visiting from Pendle, was 2nd over the line and Balazs, the highest grade age holder came through in 3rd. The 2 youngest finishers were in the 11-14 bracket: Ehran (from Pontypridd) and Alun who is a regular at this parkrun, his hometown of Aberystwyth. Then the most senior finisher, Lionel (80+) who regularly gives back to parkrun by volunteering.
When you see the full set of results, you will agree that this parkrun is one of the most inclusive events on offer in Wales. You don’t always need to be fast, you just need to go! See the full results here https://www.parkrun.org.uk/aberystwyth/results/latestresults/
You can be any type of runner, walker or jogger and still cross that finish line whether you are Mo Farah or Mo Bloggs.
In true parkrun style when there’s something to celebrate there is cake. Lynsey Wheeler celebrated her 50th parkrun this morning and the supplies were simply delicious as taste tested by todays run report writer. How wonderful also, that Susan and Martin completed their very first parkrun with us today. We do hope you had a great experience and you will continue on with your parkrun journey. You will most definitely find a whole new family and that will only expand with every parkrun you attend.
And now we must mention the 5 unknown runners that took part. Did you forget your barcode? Don’t you just hate it when that happens? Its a Friday night habit you must get into when you are getting your kit ready!

And then the finish line, we are always glad to get to it especially when all the marshals are cheering you on and what a wonderful bunch they were this morning. They selflessly give up their run to ensure all us 121 people can take part so please consider volunteering in future weeks to help the parkrun magic continue. As newbies to Aberystwyth we had a lovely warm welcome back in the rugby club. Our morning started perfectly with parkrun and finished perfectly with a full cooked breakfast and welsh tea.

Random stat, did you know that the town of Aberystwyth has the largest collection of books per head in the UK? The National library of Wales, holds 6.5 million books! Parkrun in Aberystwyth was also the one of the first parkruns to come to Wales!

Aberystwyth parkrun Event 396

With various parkrun around the country cancelled ahead of Storm Dennis, in Aberystwyth after taking a dose of brave pills it was business as usual. As expected it was a bit soggy and blowy but 88 runners and walkers made it around the 5k course, with a couple of them ignoring the conditions to record new PBs. The incentive to complete the 5k as quick as possible was not only to post a good time, but also to get to the cakes brought along by Eli to celebrate her Birthday and Philip who was doing his 100th parkrun. Thanks to everyone that made it along today in the miserable weather, but especially to all of the volunteers that made the run possible.

Student Takeover Week

A sunny morning with blue skies greeted our parkrunners and student volunteers - the calm before Storm Ciara! It was great to see so many runners, 154 being the 3rd highest attendance, and the highest attendance of a non-Bank Holiday weekend! Thanks to the students for coping with the numbers and doing a great job.

Chilly and windy but a great turnout!

Well done to everyone who took part on this blustery morning. Away from the wind it wasn't that cold, and the first signs of Spring were in evidence with snowdrops and crocuses in the park. Despite the wind, 20 people somehow managed to get PBs! It was lovely to see a few new faces, and we all hope that the visitor who slipped and fell on one of the corners is OK (her family were spectating so she had people to look after her, and luckily Nurse Eli was running right behind her - thanks Eli!). Congratulations to Heather who celebrated her 50th parkrun.
