Alyn Waters junior parkrun #7 29/07/18

Alyn Waters #7

Heavy downpours didn't stop 17 children from running at the seventh Alyn Waters junior parkrun. After a quick warm up the runners set off on the course, passing the enthusiastic marshals at regular intervals along the way, before turning round after 1000m and returning to the start.

First to finish this week was Niamh MAKIN of Deeside AAC in a very good time for the conditions. First boy home was Archie REYNOLDS, shortly followed by Lauren Jones and Dewi HEARD. Dewi was running here for the 6th time, along with Max SCHWARZ and Keira SMITH. In fact, Max and Keira have run 9 junior parkruns each so are closing in on their Half Marathon wristbands – just 2 more Sundays to go.

There were 2 first timers this week, as well as 8 runners getting PB times. Congratulations to all runners however you did, it was great to see so many out running in those conditions. A big thank you must also go out to all the parents and other grown-ups who weren't put off getting up on a Sunday morning by the rain and brought (and in many cases ran with) the participants.

The biggest thank you however goes out to all the volunteers who arrived before and left after the runners to enable Alyn Waters junior parkrun to happen. They are :
Annabel LANSOM  •  Ceri WILLIAMS  •  Craig HEARD  •  Eifion EVANS  •  Emma DAVIES  •  Karon STACE-ROBERTS  •  Katie SMITH  •  Keira SMITH  •  Martine JONES  •  Michael SHONE  •  Mike SMITH  •  Rebecca EVANS  •  Rebecca WILLIAMS  •  Robert EVANS  •  Samantha WILLIAMS  •  Stacey GRIFFITHS  •  Steve CRICKETT  •  Steve DAVIES  •  Terri DAVIES  •  Viola HARDLE

Alyn Waters junior parkrun #1 …And we’re off!

Sunday 17th June 2018.

The day finally arrived for our inaugural junior parkrun.  The project to set up North Wales' first junior parkrun and host it in Wrexham started over a year ago and we have been chomping at the bit ever since!

Firstly, some thanks.  Wrexham County Borough Council have been very supportive and the Together in Wrexham board awarded us the funding to set up the junior parkrun and purchase a defibrillator for Alyn Waters Country Park.  The team at Alyn Waters have been enthusiastic from day one and our funding bid was supported by Gwersyllt Community Council.  However, as much as these organisations have been important in the set up process the biggest thanks must go to the volunteers; without them parkrun cannot function.  Thank you everyone who has been involved in the process so far and thanks in advance to our future volunteers!

Event #1 was a huge success with 47 youngsters attending.  If you haven't seen the photos yet I strongly advise a look - the smiles on the faces of the children (and the adults!) is a joy to behold.  Most of the children were attending a junior parkrun for the first time but there were a few visitors from further afield and a couple of the children had attended events across the border in England.  You'd think that a 2k run/jog/walk at 9am on a Sunday morning would involve moaning and dragging of heels but the children were smiling, enthusiastic and speedy!

If you attended for the first time and enjoyed it please spread the word!  Alyn Waters junior parkrun is run entirely by volunteers so if you would like to get involved please drop us an email or speak to us at an event and we'd love to get you on board - no prior knowledge or experience is required and we promise you'll enjoy it.

With 47 parkrunners for our inaugural event the question is how many youngsters will attend for #2?
