Barnsley junior parkrun is cancelled on 2021-05-16 – COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Event 119 – 21 May 2017

Hello everyone, and welcome to the run report for Event 119 - a 2017 record breaker!

We welcomed a big total of 133 junior participants to a sunny Locke Park on Sunday. This is comfortably our biggest attendance of 2017 (previous best this year was Event 118 the week before with 116) and our biggest for a day short of a whole year - way back to Event 71 on 22 May 2016 (with 145)! It is also our 4th highest ever attendance. Well done to everyone that took part, and to our volunteering team for managing it all. Also, when we consider the number of adults that take part with our juniors, then there were probably in excess of 200 people completing our 2km course. It's fantastic to see so many of you up and active on a Sunday morning!

Tess was our Run Director on Sunday, supported by a fabulous group of volunteers:

Sara BOOTH, Grace BOOTH, Alex BOOTH, Stephanie BOWER, Leyla BROOKE, Rainbow BURDEN - SHARP, Jamie GODWIN, Jake HARRISON, Darrell HARRISON, Tess HICKMAN, Tim HOBBS, Geoff HOLMES, Tracy HYLAND, Lyndsey JONES, Jayne MANLEY, Jude MITCHELL, Wayne MITCHELL, Tony MURRAY, Jayne OGLEY, Lucy QUINN, Ailsa STOREY, Jennifer ULLETT, Lee WAKELIN

As ever, we are hugely grateful to them all for giving up their time to make the event happen.

As we are sure you all know by now, we are always looking for new people to add to our volunteer pool and welcome anyone that would like to volunteer, in order for us to fill our weekly rosters as easily as possible. None of the roles are difficult and we are always available to guide and train anyone knew to volunteering on any of the roles. Please see the future roster page in the volunteer section of our website for roles we need to fill, and let us know via email, Facebook or Twitter if you can help.

Tess handed out a load of milestone wrist bands during the pre-run brief and you can see a host of photos of our proud juniors over on our Facebook page. Remember folks, its a blue half-marathon band after 11 runs, a green marathon band after 22 runs and an orange ultra marathon band after 50 runs. The next milestone is a certificate to mark 100 runs, and we are very pleased to note that we have a handful of juniors within 20 or less of that target now. You can also download a certificate to accompany the 3 milestone wristbands via your parkrun profile. More info here:

https://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/articles/201736292-Are-there-any-participation-incentives-in-the-junior-series-

After the run brief, it was off to the warmup. Remember - if it's your birthday on or around any Sunday (or #juniorparkrunday as we often call it) then let our warm-up leader or RD know and we will be happy to have you join us to lead the warmup.

And then we were off and going! The stats from Sunday are as follows:

133 juniors completed the course

17 First Timers joined us - 15 completing their first ever junior parkruns, and 2 visitors from Nostell and Graves junior parkruns. Welcome to you all!

35 New PBs were recorded, well done to you all! That pushes our all-time number of PB runs past 2000 (2014 now to be exact).

Unfortunately there were 7 Unknowns in the list. Don't forget you barcodes!

It is great to see the increasing numbers of juniors attending our event, and many families then enjoying the cafe and playground facilities in the park. Hopefully the better weather will see this continue through the summer months.

See you all on Sunday.

PS: Apologies for the lack of a run report last week for Event 118.

Event 117 – 7 May 2017

Hello all!

Another big attendance on Sunday and we fell just one short of a century this time, with 99 juniors taking part.

12 First Timers joined us, all taking part in their first ever junior parkrun - welcome to you all;

26 New PBs were recorded - well done to all of you;

Unfortunately there were 4 Unknowns - :-(

We also welcomed a few juniors visiting us from Leeds.

Thanks as always go out to this wonderful team in hi-vis, who made the magic happen for our juniors this week:

Stephanie BOWER, Rainbow BURDEN - SHARP, Kate CADWELL, Christine CAPEWELL, Jason EVANS, Jamie GODWIN, Jake HARRISON, Darrell HARRISON, Tess HICKMAN, Jayne MANLEY, Jude MITCHELL, Emma MOORHOUSE, Tony MURRAY, Mark Garls ROBINSON, Paul STEPHENSON, Martin SWIFT, Kathleen TAYLOR, Paige ULLETT, Jennifer ULLETT, Dave John WILLIAMSON

Before the start, we handed out a lot of blue and green - half marathon (11 runs) and marathon (21 runs) - milestone wristbands on Sunday. Thanks to everyone for the warm applause you give for our juniors every week, it's great to see them all being rewarded for their efforts and enjoying the recognition of their achievements. It's also very rewarding for us in the volunteering team to see the smiles on their faces as they collect their bands. We often post photos of the kids individually, but with so many this time, we opted for a 'team line-up' photo (although I think we missed one or two who were eager to head off for the warm-up), and here they are. Well done!

Event-117-1

Dave did our warm up this week, and thanks to him for travelling from Leeds to help fill our volunteer roster. parkrun HQ asked us to carry out a quick headcount of how many adults ran the 2 km course on Sunday and after asking for a show of hands which I only half-managed to count, a head-count as everyone set-off gave a total of 53 adults this week in the field of 99 juniors. So we are helping a good number of mums and dads get active and fitter as well as our 4-14 year olds! A couple of issues on the day that are worthy of mention:

Firstly, we had a collision between runners at the finish line. Fortunately there was no significant injury, but it appears to have resulted from one runner changing direction at the last minute to cross the finish line. The course may be confusing for our younger and less experienced runners due to it being 'two-and-a bit' laps. It may help if we ask parents/guardians if you would check your children know to stay on the tarmac to pass to the right of the finish line on lap 1, same again on lap 2, and then through to the finish line on the grass to complete the course. Thank you.

Secondly, one of our tokens has gone missing. Number 91 hasn't made it back after the event and numbers 90 and 92 are really missing their buddy:

Event-117-2

Position 91 is an unknown runner in our results which leads us to believe that the finisher has left taking the token and without having had their barcode scanned. If anyone thinks this may be their child, or they know who it may be, then please let us know. The tokens do cost money to replace, so we would love to have it back. Thanks.

Looking ahead to Sunday 14 May and Event 118, we have another big pile of milestone wristbands to hand out: 7 blue, 1 green and 1 orange ultra marathon (50 runs). It is really encouraging to see the number of these milestones that our juniors are notching up each week and is a good sign of the strength of the event now. As always we are looking forward to that and hopefully we can give out each of these little beauties on the day:

Event-117-3

Finally the volunteer roster for Sunday 14 May is looking OK so far, but we are looking for 3 barcode scanners and 6 marshals to fill it. As ever, we would appreciate it if you could let us know as soon as you can by email, Facebook or Twitter if you can help us out. We really would like to expand our volunteer pool to ease the pressure on our 'regulars' (which will help us all as we move forward into holiday season), so do please consider adding your name to the list once in a while. Remember, if you haven't volunteered before, there is nothing to fear, we will provide guidance on what to do for each role. Huge thanks to all of you who step forward each week.

That's it for this week.

See you all on Sunday!

Event 116 – 30 April 2017

We had a good attendance on Sunday, with a total of 78 juniors joining us for the 2 laps of Locke Park. Our weekend stats looked like this:

78 juniors took part - just a few runners short of our overall average attendance (82);

8 First Timers - welcome to all, each doing their first ever junior parkrun;

20 New PBs - well done to each of you;

4 Unknown runners in the list :-( Remember #DFYB - don't forget your barcodes.

Laura was in the hot seat as Run Director this week and oversaw another successful event, assisted by this wonderful team of volunteers:

Sara BOOTH, Stephanie BOWER, Rainbow BURDEN - SHARP, Christine CAPEWELL, Laura DOAK, Jake HARRISON, Darrell HARRISON, Tess HICKMAN, Tracy HYLAND, Jayne MANLEY, Wayne MITCHELL, Jude MITCHELL, Emma MOORHOUSE, Tony MURRAY, Rachael RODDIS, Martin SWIFT, Jennifer ULLETT, Tim WADE, Dawn L WALTON

We managed to fill our roster ahead of the weekend for this event, which is great and thanks to you all for stepping forward. Having the roster complete before Friday is our aim each week and it helps keep our stress levels in check if we can achieve this, so thanks in advance to you all for your continuing support!

Stat fact: Over our 116 events to date, we have now had 1,162 different runners. This means that on average, we have 10 new runners at every event. This is great to see and shows a steady growth in our junior runner community.

Advance notice of cancelled events: Due to other events arranged in the park, we will be cancelling two events - on 11 June and 13 August. We will of course post reminders nearer the time of each, but please note the dates now. 11 June is the Classic Car Show and 13 August is the Summer Gala.

That's all for this week, see you on Sunday!

Event 115 – 23 April 2017

We enjoyed a lovely morning in Locke Park on Sunday, and broke the 100 attendees barrier with 102 juniors taking part - our biggest attendance since Event 90 way back on 9 October 2016. Fantastic! Well done and thank you to all who took part.

Tess was our Run Director and oversaw a wonderful team of volunteers - a huge 'Thank You' goes out to you all, as always:

Stephanie BOWER, Rainbow BURDEN - SHARP, Christine CAPEWELL, John DOWNING, Sheila DOWNING, Jason EVANS, Ian FRANCE, Jamie GODWIN, Jake HARRISON, Tess HICKMAN, Geoff HOLMES, Rachel LEE, Katie LEE, Jayne MANLEY, Tony MURRAY, Sheila OCARROLL, Paige ULLETT, Jennifer ULLETT, Tim WADE, Dawn L WALTON

Of those 102 juniors, we had:

11 First Timers - 10 of whom were taking part in their first ever junior parkrun and 1 visitor from Huddersfield. Welcome to you all!

15 New PBs - well done!

2 Unknowns - :-( - remember DFYB - don't forget your barcodes.

Looking ahead to Sunday 30 April, our roster is in reasonable shape with all of the finish area roles covered, but we do still need 6 marshals. Please let us know if you can help via email to barnsley-juniorsoffice@parkrun.com, or our Facebook and Twitter pages.

See you on Sunday!

Event 114 – 16 April 2017

Happy Easter! We enjoyed a bright but chilly start to Easter Sunday in Locke Park and were joined by a fair turnout on the day. Well done to everyone that made it - we saw the best of the day's weather and I'm sure you all enjoyed a chocolatey reward afterwards when you got home!

There were 50 juniors with us on Sunday. 6 First Timers - 4 completing their first ever junior parkruns and 2 visitors joining us from Huddersfield jpr - welcome to you all! 17 New PBs were recorded - were any of those chocolate-egg-powered I wonder? 19 volunteers made the event possible - thank you!

I was in the RD role on Sunday and would like to thank you all for adapting to the slight course layout change we needed to make to accommodate the setup for the Friends of Locke Park Easter Gala Day. No problems in the shortened finish funnel and the barcode scanning team did a great job. Thanks, as always, to the whole team of volunteers. This week's stars in hi-vis were:

Martin BALL, Stephanie BOWER, Rainbow BURDEN - SHARP, Christine CAPEWELL, Jake HARRISON, Darrell HARRISON, Tracy HYLAND, David John LEE, Jayne MANLEY, Jude MITCHELL, Tony MURRAY, Jayne OGLEY, Jason SHEPHERD, Paul STEPHENSON, Martin SWIFT, Kathleen TAYLOR, Dawn L WALTON, Ian WALTON, Karen WILSON

We handed out blue half-marathon wristbands (for 11 runs) to these 2 juniors before we set off for the warmup.

Event-114-1Event-114-2

Jayne led our warm-up and got some great support from Amelia, decked out in bunny ears for the occasion. Remember kids, if you want to help out with the warm-up any time, just ask on the day!

Event-114-3

On the subject of milestone wristbands, we have a few blue bands to award for 11 runs for children that haven't been for quite a while. So if you know any of the following or their families, please let them know: Ryan Joys, Jack White, and Lucas Malcolm.

Finally this week, a note on the volunteer roster. A few of you offered your services for next week while at the event on Sunday and this was great to see, thank you. The roster always needs filling though so please don't forget to let us know by email, Facebook or Twitter if you can help.

Thanks for your support and see you on Sunday!

Paul
