Barnsley parkrun – Event number 125 – 29th June 2013

It's a Record

The Barnsley parkrun attendance record was smashed today with 143 runners completing the challenging 5k course. It was great to see so many first time runners out there and we hope to see you all again soon.

Not quite a record

On its first event the Barnsley parkrun course record was set by Ian Kimpton at 15:56. Today we really thought it was going to be beaten at last by Darren Middleton of Leeds AC. However, it was not to be, Ian crossed the line in first place in 16:02; just 6 seconds shy of the record, or 2 seconds per lap! Hopefully someone will break this long standing record soon.

Talking of records the fastest time for a lady at Barnsley was set by Julie Briscoe back in July 2012 in a time of 18:07. It's about time someone broke that record too.

So while I'm at it talking about records, for the first timers you'll notice an Age Grade % against your name. This is the WAVA method of working out a % score for a performance, based on the world record at a particular distance for a particular age, and is a good way of seeing "where you are" compared with other runners of different ages or for comparing your current times with previous performances set at a younger age. So as well as looking at your time have a look at your Age Grade too, it's a good measure of how well you're doing against others of a similar age.

Sweatshop parkrunner of the month - June

We're delighted to announce that Norman Cole was the June recipient of our monthly prize, generously supported by Sweatshop.
Norman's prize is a free pair of running shoes fitted out at his local Sweatshop store. Norman's been a regular parkrunner since December 2011 he has completed 45 runs at Barnsley and has knocked nearly 4 minutes off his time since starting.
