Sweatshop monthly prize winner: October 2012

We're delighted to announce that David NEEDHAM was the December recipient of our monthly prize, generously supported by Sweatshop.
David's prize is a free pair of running shoes fitted out at his local Sweatshop store. David"s been a regular parkrunner since August 2011. We hope his new shoes will help keep the progress going, or at least make the training sessions a little easier.

The Run

It was a cold day for a parkrun but it was good to see so many people turn out. We had a few youngsters using the parkrun as a training run and just completing 2 laps of the course - if they'd done a cool down lap they could have counted it as a parkrun and 1/10 of the way towards their parkrun t shirt, maybe next week.

News

Don't forget next week's event is the "March, April Run for Fools" it'll be fancy dress, an Olympics theme is emerging. I can promise you a Barnsley parkrun with a twist next week. For those doing the Silkstone Shuffle later in the morning why not come along and volunteer, you'll have time to do that and get to the Shuffle on time. Unfortunately you'll miss the cake! Oh yes. for those coming to David Allen's afterwards for tea and coffee don't forget to bring cakes, buns and biscuits

On an entirely different matter, for those that get the link to the parkrun Volunteers' Newsletter (http://wiki.parkrun.info/index.php/Volunteer_Newsletter/Edition_2) there was information about a free online training course entitled 'Be Inclusive and Active'. It aims to provide a level of understanding and knowledge that will ensure that participating organisations are better equipped to understand the specific needs of our disabled participants. I've done it and it's very informative. Full details on the link, above.

parkrun #49 Race Report

 Parkrunner of the month

Congratulations to Kieron Brice this month's winner of a free pair of running shoes courtesy of Sweatshop. Thanks also to Jess from Sweatshop Castleford (based in Xscape) who dropped off some leafets and sales offers.

Parkrun 1st Birthday

Well it's nearly on us, Barnsley's 1st Birthday! Saturday 21st January is the date. We're trying to arrange something for afterwards - watch this space.

The 21st also marks the end of the annual championships. As you may be aware the parkrun is run by volunteers for volunteers and doesn't make any charges, trying to cover its costs by charitable donations. We think we've found a source for some reasonably priced trophies but could really do with a sponsor to help defray the costs - if anyone knows of anyone…

Full details of the 1st Birthday party after next week's run.

Race Report Barnsley parkrun No. 49

Finally

We went to the Rob Royd Farm Shop after the run this week and had Coffee, Hot Chocolate Cake and bacon Sandwiches (well some of us did) and processed the results introducing one or two new people to the mysteries of the timing system in the process. We'll be doing the same again this week, going for a coffee that is, at Rob Royd. If you'd like to join us turn left out of Locke Park car park and Rob Royd is 1/4 mile on your left.

See you Saturday for a parkrun

New Year’s Eve parkrun

Barnsley parkrun Number 48 - New Year's Eve

Happy New Year parkrunners. It's the time of year where you look back at what's gone on over the previous 12 months and make plans for the next 12. Well 12 months ago there was no Barnsley parkrun. Our first birthday is on 21st January so a bit more information on how we intend to celebrate it in a week or so; it will be, ice permitting, run number 51.

If you look closely at the bottom of the results page there's some interesting statistics. During 2011 we had 48 events, 42 different winners, with an average of 63.4 runners per event. The average time of all runners is 27.57. We have had 581 runners from 56 different clubs who have run for a total of 1,419 hours. We have had 3045 runs, 845 PBs with a total distance run of 15,225 km. I've worked out that that means Barnsley parkrunners have run off around 1,277,100 calories or 425 lbs of fat!

This week we had 18 women, 29 men and 1 unknown. There were 8 shiny new PBs and 2 First Timers.

Big congratulations to Andrew Dakin who with 35 runs at Barnsley and 15 at Leeds becomes our first regular runner to achieve the 50 parkruns. There will be envious mutterings when he turns up on the startline with his 50 T Shirt!

Race 31st December

48 runners took part in the 48th run which was won by first time parkrunner Shaun Dimelow in 17.25. In second place was Tom White in 18.58, still coming back from injury, and in third place was Mark Leggett in 18.37. Mark has the distinction of being the 3000th Barnsley parkrunner across the line achieving Barnsley's 15,000th km.

First woman was Lesley Legget in 20.22 (PB) with Joanne Bolton coming in second in 21.29 (PB); third woman and first junior woman over the line was Hayley Townend in 22.50.

In the junior men we had Gregg Dawson taking honours in 23.46 with Sam Maddock taking second place in 28.15.

Second place in the junior women was Paige Dawson in 32.07 followed by Alison Moody in third place in a time of 32.11.

Volunteers

Your volunteers this week were:  Alan Mills, Gerard Tayeh, Jane Sandall, Judith Hygate, Susan Rylatt and Tony Murray. The man with the camera was from the Barnsley Chronicle so hopefully there'll be some pics in the next issue or on their website.

While we're talking of volunteers we're going to be doing some planning next Saturday (7th January) for who's going to direct some of the upcoming races. We'd love it for some new people to have a go. Full training and support in all aspects of running the events will be given along with plenty of hand holding (where appropriate!). So if you'd like to get more involved, have a word with us on the finish line any Saturday.

Finally

Next parkrun is on the 7th at 9.00 hopefully we'll see you there

Chris

Boxing Day Freedom Run

Eleven intrepid runners braved the balmy winds of Locke Park to take part in the first Boxing Day Freedom Run.

We thought we'd try and do it a little different to normal and so reversed the route, starting near the toilet block (lovely) but still finishing opposite the cafe. I think on the day the consensus of opinion was that it was 'a little more difficult' than the usual way of running it but nonetheless I think everyone enjoyed it.

We always advertised this run as a freedom run so I think some runners were disappointed when they arrived to fond that it wasn't an official one as advertised on the parkrun Christmas list. However, in fairness to our regular runners who would, had it been an official one, have come along and run it, it's only fair that we stick to our original intention and run it as a Freedom.

Thanks to Tim Wade, Sue Rylatt and Corrin Harris who volunteered on the Day.

So here are the results:

Results
Pos Time Athlete id Athlete
1 19.43 A110992 Simon Newton
2 20.02 A13846 John Broom
3 20.19 A22706 Steve Darby
4 22.11 A13845 Dawn Broom
5 24.06 A117469 Megan Jenkinson
6 24.11 A77215 Jason Newell
7 27.02 A136846 Claire Wilkinson
8 27.04 A125846 Jon O'Hanlon
9 29.33   Stuart Jenkinson
10 29.43 A129879 Jane Martin
11 30.34

A22544

Ruth Benzirma

Thanks to all who took part, especially to Stuart, Megan's Dad; hopefully we'll see him on the start line as a regular for future runs!

The first 4 runners, Simon Newton, John Broom, Steve Darby, and Dawn Broomwere taking part in a three parkruns in three days. Jason Newell who's on 49 parkruns at the moment was visiting for the Freedom run saving his 50th for his home park. Ruth Benzirma only found out about the run at 8.00 whilst in York and managed to get to the start line just as we were about to start. We hope to see you all sometime at a regular parkrun, you'll be very welcome.

We will run the Boxing Day Freedom run again next year on Wednesday 26th December. And watch out for another route reversal some time in 2012

parkrun Christmas 2011 Edition

Ice Ice Baby! Was the story of the last couple of weeks with two parkruns in succession being cancelled due to ice. It’s never an easy decision to cancel an event but well done to Tim Wade who’s been running the last few events for making the decision. I think you’ll all agree it was the right one.

What a fabulous turnout for our 1st Santa run! We had 76 finishers, 8 First Timers (welcome to them), 6 PBs, 31 women and 45 men.

Just about everyone was in fancy dress and an enormous thank you is due to Jon O’Hanlon and Corrin Harris (both on the finish line today, Dinner Jacket and trainers/Christmas tree) for bringing cake and cheese and to Pam Brown one of our volunteers, who has ‘emigrated’ to France, for making the cake; she was there in spirit.

Christmas Eve Race

Well what a Christmas present! Brad Smith not only took his second parkrun win but smashed his PB by 16 seconds taking 18.43 (PB) and was first JM15-19. Well done Brad we’ll be looking for that time to fall throughout 2012 (no pressure). Second home was Martin Cooper in 18.56 followed by Keith Littlewood in third on 19.03 (PB).

First of the women across the finish line was Kerry Storrar taking 21.10 second was Hayley Townend in 22.52 and third was Jayne Parkinson in 23.00.

Not as many PBs as is usual but I suppose the fancy dress hindered quite a few people. Pictures are appearing on the Barnsley parkrun facebook page so go and have a look to see if you ‘star’.

Boxing Day

Don’t forget we’re doing a Freedom run on Boxing Day at 9.00. Tim’s bringing the parkrun timing gear so although the results won’t count towards parkrun totals we will be able to calculate the results – as long as you bring your barcode (well even if you don’t bring your barcode, it’s just easier with the barcode). We thought it would be a good idea to do it for a charity and the first one that sprang to mind was Barnsley Hospice so we’ll have a donations tin for anyone that would like to make a contribution.

Our friends over at Huddersfield parkrun are holding a Christmas Day run starting at 9.00 so if you really want to get your fill of parkruns over Christmas you might want to try it out. Let us know if it’s as hilly as Barnsley.

Finally

The next ‘official’ Barnley parkrun will be on New Year’s Eve, 31st December so if we don’t see you Boxing Day hopefully we’ll see you there.

Parkrun is nothing without all the runners, volunteers and supporters so may I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you for all the effort you’ve put in this year and wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year full of miles of running and many PBs.

Chris

PS Don’t forget you can track Santa’s progress here
