Barnsley parkrun Event number 117 4th May 2013

It's a Record!

We had a record number of finishers last Saturday - 124! Hopefully as the summer goes on, and word spreads, we'll be beating that record again soon.

Sweatshop monthly prize winner: May 2013

We're delighted to announce that Barry Brenton was the May recipient of our monthly prize, generously supported by Sweatshop.
Barry's prize is a free pair of running shoes fitted out at his local Sweatshop store. Barry's been a regular parkrunner since March 2012 and has knocked over 6 minutes off his Barnsley parkrun time from when he started. We hope his new shoes will help keep the progress going, or at least make the training sessions a little easier.

Friends of Locke Park

It was suggested that we could have a family fun/sports day, to raise monies for Friends of Locke Park and Tower project. Alan, our Event Director, has been given a date of 22nd June. Any suggestions gladly welcome. The Friends Group will be attending parkrun 18th May so we can perhaps discuss then. Over to you guys, any ideas? Get your thinking caps on.

Barnsley parkrun – Event number 109 – 9th March 2013

The cafe

The cafe's been doing toast and tea/coffee for £1 for the last couple of weeks and will be adding porridge, fruit and tea/coffee for £2 this week. This is a great move forward for us all so please, let's support them as they wouldn't normally open during the Winter on a Saturday and are opening up just for us. So why not stay and have a cuppa and some breakfast after your run.

Don't forget your barcode #dfyb

It was easy in the old days when there were only a few people running round Locke Park but as the numbers grow it becomes more difficult to add runners to the results if they don't have a barcode so, as you'll have seen in the recent parkrun newsletter, "No barcode, no time". It's easy to get multiple copies just follow the link on the weekly newsletter that drops into your inbox print them off and distribute them amongst your bags, coats, glovebox etc. And if you do forget your barcode and run anyway please don't forget to take a token and get it scanned as your time will have been recorded on the stopwatch when you cross the finish line. You won't get a time recorded against your name but it does make the results so much easier to process when tokens match up with times.
Which leads me into...

...don't forget to keep left on the last lap

Recently we've had a few runners crossing the line to the right of the finish which is causing difficulties for us with the stop watch as we don't always know that you have finished, we had an example this week when someone ran behind the timekeeper got a finish token but we hadn't stopped the clock for them. We sorted it out but it takes time when we'd rather be having toast and a coffee. So in future unless you cross the line properly the clock won't be stopped and you won't get a token until you have crossed the line. So don't forget AT THE END OF THE 3RD LAP KEEP LEFT!

We really try and keep rules to a minimum but these little things really do help us with processing the results

Barnsley parkrun Event number 105 9th February 2013

Notes:

Wow thirteen new parkrunners this week, welcome to you all and don't forget to tell your friends.

Weather

With the inclement weather we've been having we will always try, whenever possible, to make sure there is a parkrun on a Saturday morning for you to run. However, if we do have to cancel, and sometimes it may be at the last minute, we'll post it on the following 'media' and in this order:
First - Twitter using @Barnsleyparkrun (You don't even need a twitter account just search for @Barnsleyparkrun in your browser and it'll show you the messages)
Secondly - Facebook http://www.parkrun.org.uk/barnsley/ you just need to "Like" us and you'll get all the updates you need.
Finally - we'll post on here, the News Page. This will probably be the final post as it's slightly more difficult for us to post when we're "out in the field".

Sweatshop monthly prize winner: January 2013

We're delighted to announce that John Moss was the January recipient of our monthly prize, generously supported by Sweatshop.

Snow!

Before getting into this week's report it's worth applauding those hardy runners that ignored the "Event's Cancelled" notices on Facebook, Twitter, and parkrun website and turned up and had an impromptu parkrun on Saturday 26th February. They even brought along their own timekeeper so here are their results and a report from David Needham. Don't forget to log the run as a Freedom parkrun.

Freedom parkrun

Even though the official run was cancelled (some of us don't use facebook so didn't know) a dozen hardy souls still completed the usual route though it was very snow covered.
We ended up with Cath Needham and Mrs Fryers (Tom and James' mum) timing the run and Patrick Needham assisting and taking photos.
The run itself was one of the hardest I and many of the others had taken part in with thick snow covering the whole course.
The eventual winner was Ricky Hydes with a time of 23:27. The full list of finishes is as follows:
1. Ricky Hydes 23:27
2. Tim Morgan 26:08
3. Michael Dodd 29:04
