BARROW PARKRUN REPORT #376 – 5TH JANUARY 2019

A blockbuster of a run report for you this week, thanks to Tourist Barry Shackleton for writing the report!

We have moved into the second month of winter and the first parkrun Saturday of 2019, and so far the weather Gods have been kind with no bad weather threatening enough for cancellations. Indeed, at 9am as 242 runners gathered at the bandstand for the Run Director's address it was about 8°C with no wind so it felt mild and maybe that is what was attracting the highest attendance ever seen at a Barrow parkrun.

It is the 9th time there have been 200+ runners at Barrow and 242 was 19 more than the previous record which was set in October last year. This was one of 64 new attendance parkrun records which have been set this week in the UK. There were also a record number of parkruns taking place in the UK with 581, and this attracted 168,139 runners which was over 150,000 for the first time ever and beats the previous record set in May 2018.

So with all this activity, here is a closer look at who did what:
The first runner home was Liam Walker of the University of Sheffield Tri Club who finished in 17:44. This was his 16th run at Barrow, and the 14th time he has crossed the line in front of everyone else. He is also the 4th fastest runner ever seen at Barrow which was when he ran his PB of 16:11 on New Years Day this year.
An unknown runner finished in 2nd place while in 3rd position was Ian Sadler of Walney Wind Cheetahs who was running his 265th parkrun, of which 248 have been completed at Barrow. Ian already has his 250 run t-shirt and needs just two more appearances at Barrow to complete a 250-double. Ian is the 123rd fastest runner ever seen at Barrow.

The Walney Wind Cheetahs club also produced the first Lady with Amy Singleton coming home in 13th place overall in 21:15. This was her 124th parkrun of which 120 have been at Barrow and this is the 13th time that Amy has finished as first Lady.
Karen Oldham was 2nd Lady in 22nd place who was taking part in her 78th parkrun and Karen is a true passionista having completed all 78 runs at Barrow. Third position was claimed by Sarah Bouffler who runs for the Barrow and Furness Striders and this was Sarah's 288th appearance at Barrow out of 295 completed parkruns. She also had the 8th highest attendance of any runners appearing on the day.

Another Barrow and Furness Strider, David Spencer, was the only one on the day with an Age Grading higher than 80% when his 82.15% scored higher than anyone else. He finished in 65th place with a time of 26:14 which is brilliant for someone who is in the V80 category. He holds the Barrow record for the quickest run in that category, and also holds the V75 category. David has completed 238 parkruns with 236 of them being at Barrow, having strayed only twice at Cardiff and Fell Foot.

There were 26 runners today who ran a Personal Best time, so well done to them. All aboard the PB Express. There were no new Category records. 116 runners today were ladies and 124 were men, and there were 30 juniors. Don't forget that while we love the youngsters running with us, if the junior is under the age of 11 they MUST be accompanied at all times during the run by an adult. 12 of the juniors were female aged 10 and under so there is a rich vein of young running talent in the Barrow area.

There were 18 First Timers who joined the parkrun party at Barrow of which 15 were running a parkrun for the very first time and joining the ever growing parkrun family. Now that you have completed your first parkrun why not come back to Barrow next week and try to run a Personal Best time by beating it?

This week there were 23 runners who were shown as 'unknown'. It's terrible to have a brilliant run, maybe get a Personal Best, or finish in 2nd place as happened today, and then fail to have it recognised because you have no barcode. PLEASE …. Don't Forget Your Barcode. Need a new barcode? Or would you like your result as a text? Follow the link to your profile from your latest results email. And remember please don't take home your finish tokens. They are not souvenirs - DON'T BE A TOKEN MAGPIE.

HALL OF FAME

250 - Dave Aitken (Parkside Panthers) joined the 250-club and gets a green commemorative t-shirt.

-and Barrow runners were featured in each group!

199 - Ruth Haughian (Walney Wind Cheetahs) She is only 5k away from completing 1,000,000 parkrun metres.

Jet Black (100 runs) - 44 runners

Want to give feedback? Have anything to say or want anyone mentioned in future run reports? Are there any corrections needed to this report?
Please e-mail barrowoffice@parkrun.com

VOLUNTEERS - REMEMBER that parkrun can only take place weekly because of the volunteers and marshalls who give up their time on a Saturday morning. If you want to get involved, email barrowhelpers@parkrun.com.
This week, we had 20 credited volunteers so thank you all.
And potential runners remember that to officially take part at Barrow (or any other parkrun anywhere) you need to be registered at www.parkrun.org.uk , but you only need to register once and the barcode they give you will be needed each week when you have finished the run.
DON'T FORGET YOUR BARCODE.

Barrow parkrun started on the 24th September 2011 with 25 runners and 9 volunteers. The course record was set in October 2015 by Phil Waite in 15:12, and the female course record was set by Lizzie Browne in October 2012 at 16:24. There have been 4,377 different runners on the course, representing 421 different running clubs, and they have completed 47,447 runs. The average attendance is 126 every week and there have been 7,844 Personal Bests. The attendance record stands at 242 which was set this week. Barrow parkrunners have completed 237,235Km and have been running in total for 2 years and 256 days.
And that's it for the report for run #376.
If you fancy writing a run report, and putting your slant on it, get in touch. We would love to hear from you.

Barrow parkrun – Event number 371 – 15th December 2018

A combination of dreadful weather and the Christmas party season being upon us meant the second lowest turnout of the year at Barrow parkrun with only 96 hardy souls making their way to the 9am start. It was also day two of the local “Frosty Triple” race series, so quite a few parkrun regulars were out collecting medals and personal best times on a different course than their usual Saturday morning route.

Of the brave 96, first home was Ryan Everett, in 18:21, second was Luca Messenger Jones in 19:19 and third was William McAllister in 19:30.
For the ladies, Janice Callister was first in 22:25, Sarah Bouffler 2nd in 22:55 and third place was taken by Sandra Garnett in 23:11.

2 visitors from the Spectrum Striders running club, Ran and Lisa Mackay, were the only two “first-timers” and we look forward to seeing them again in the future in better weather. Three people recorded new Personal Best times, Matthew Lynch, Isla Robertson and Rebecca MacMahon, well done!

Junior runners Will Cush and Joseph Cush made their milestone 10th run and will be able to vlaim their free milestone t-shirt.

Barrow parkrun is free to enter and takes place every Saturday at 9 am, meet at the bandstand at 8:45 for the pre-run briefing. Register at www.parkrun.org.uk/register and follow the instructions on that page to print your personal barcode then you can receive an official time, which is emailed and text to you on the Saturday when the results are processed.

Don’t forget our special runs over Christmas - Join us for our 6th Christmas Day parkrun here in Barrow - 9am start and why not start 2019 with a parkrun? Join us for a 9am start to our 5th New Year's Day parkrun.

See you at the bandstand!

Barrow parkrun – Event number 370 – 8th December 2018

I missed Barrow parkrun this week (and last) -the pounding rain and wind against my window and the comfort and warmth of the duvet meant I failed to make the start line. But that’s one of the great things about parkrun, there’s no pressure to turn up week in, week out. I’m telling myself that anyway!

The sixteen volunteers who made sure the event went ahead didn’t get the luxury of rolling over and going back to sleep however, they had to be there and in awful weather too, so a huge shout out to David Farish, Donna Bates, Jeff Crosthwaite, David Spencer, Michael Cook, Sarah Cubiss, Jamie O’hare, Jakob Nelson, Philip Everett, John Wearing, Fred Bagley, Owen Baxendale, Sian Littlemore, Darren Fearnley, Brian Leece and Kay Sutherland. Oh, and myself, as “run report writer”, although sitting here with the laptop on my knee, the heating on full and a rum and coke by my side, I don’t think I can claim the same credit!

Liam Walker was first home on a return visit to his hometown, the Sheffield based flyer completing the Barrow course in 17 minutes exactly. He’s back for a Christmas break soon so that first place slot may well be his a few more times in the next few weeks. Youngster Luca Messenger Jones was second in 19L20 and Martin Currie was third in 19:51.

For the ladies, Karen Maggio-Poyntz was first in 23:50, Jo Kilkenny was 2nd on her first appearance at Barrow in 24:16 and 3rd place was Michelle Whalley in a time of 24:50.

Milestone celebrations this week were Martin Clarkson and Leslie Wearing, both celebrating their 100th runs!

See you at the bandstand (if released for the duvet in time)

Barrow parkrun – event 369

Barrow parkrun – event 36

A very soggy parkrun for our 122 hardcore runners but even the heavy rain did not deter the 7 people who ran with us for the very first time or hinder people’s ability to get new PBs.  Big thank you to the volunteers who got wet to make this event go ahead.

Milestone run for Adrian Newnham who reached his 100th run – well done and many thanks for your lovely cake.  Looking forward to seeing you wear your tshirt when it arrives.  Also congratulations to Phil Horrocks on his 300th run whilst not a formal milestone, it is an incredible achievement.  Only 200 more runs before your next t-shirt….

Just a reminder that over the festive period we are hosting extra runs on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both with 9am starts.  Not all of the other local parkruns have stated whether they are doing New Year’s Days event but it is the only time of the year that a “dirty double” is possible.

Men’s placings

1st - William Mcallister in 19:14

2nd - first timer Adam Ward in 19:32

3rd – Ryan Everett in 19:54
