Barry Island parkrun – Event #228

I’m a self-confessed parkrun tourist (my home parkrun is Southwick Country Park in Wiltshire) and I love running at different parkrun events. It’s always great to run at a different course for a change of scene as well as meet new people. This weekend we’re both taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon and as we’re staying over the night before it was a perfect opportunity to finally run at this event. Offering to write this weeks’ run report meant I was also able to give something back to the Barry Island parkrun team.

Firstly Happy parkrun anniversary! It’s now been 15 years since Paul Sinton-Hewitt started, what was then called, the Bushy Park Time Trial. A free, weekly, timed 5k run which has now grown into the global phenomenon that is parkrun.

It was a little grey upon parking at the promenade however it wasn’t windy and it wasn’t raining, near perfect conditions for running. Following the steady stream of runners we headed across to the start (where handily you can leave any bags) and gathered for the first timers briefing at 8:50. There were a number of runners who were new to this parkrun like myself as well as quite a few runners/volunteers also running the half marathon the next day.

Out of the 150 parkrunners who finished there were an incredible 27 new PB’s and a special congratulations to the 3 first timers to parkrun too - welcome to your new ‪Saturday morning‬ addiction!

The route is two laps however consists of two out and backs with a small loop, which includes a short sharp incline. The course is entirely on tarmac and runners start and finish in the same place, logistically it’s all very straight forward. From the top of the course there are great views back across the bay and you could also see Lundy Island. Near the finish there is an excellent cafe called Whitmore & Jackson where you could get a good breakfast and use the free WiFi for your #parkfaff needs.

All of the marshals were brilliant and were so encouraging to all of the runners, I cannot say enough good things about this unique parkrun - please check it out!
