Basildon parkrun Run Report #304

Welcome to Basildon parkrun Run Report 304, this week sent in by Run Director Pauline!

Many thanks to the volunteers who ensured that the last parkrun of decade and 2019 happened, the roster was looking very empty on Thursday evening. The volunteers were aged from 7 to 80+, you don't have to be related to the Run Director to volunteer!

Be like our hi-viz heroes and get your name on the roster at least once in 2020. Go to https://www.parkrun.org.uk/basildon/futureroster/ for further information and the Basildon parkrun volunteer email address.

We had 142 parkrunners, including first timers and tourists from Whiteley (Southampton), Peacehaven, York, Cheltenham and Johannesburg! Despite the muddy conditions there were 11 personal bests. Well done to everyone for getting round safely.

There were milestone parkruns for Robert Freswater and Norman Morgan doing their 50th parkruns and Patiricia Green did her 100th. If you are doing a milestone parkrun let the Run Director know on the morning so you can get a mention in the briefing.

See you next Saturday for the first parkrun of 2020. Remember your barcode as no physical barcode no result (it's the parkrun rules!)

Thanks Pauline!

Basildon parkrun Run Report #298

Welcome to Basildon parkrun Run Report 298, this week sent in by Run Director Dave Mullender!

MILESTONE , MILESTONE !
Our very own Kalli Isborne has reached 100 parkruns.
Well done Kalli, and thank you for all the cake.

This week we saw 150 of you, from 14 different clubs, run, jog and walk around a lovely muddy and slippery Northlands Park, to achieve 16 PBs. 14 first timers came to Basildon, with tourists from as far a field as Chelmsford and Southminster, but the winner for most miles goes to Orpington.

This was made possible by 20 hi-viz hero’s, who timed you, scanned you, and pointed you in the right direction, while keeping a eye on you, for your safety.

If you would like to volunteer for one of the roles, whether it be marshalling, timing  or scanning, follow the link on the web site.
Your parkrun needs YOU!

Thanks Dave!

Basildon parkrun Run Report #297

Welcome to Basildon parkrun Run Report 297, this week sent in by Run Director Dave Mullender!

Sorry it’s a little late, Microsoft doesn’t love me anymore!

First, a BIG SHOUT OUT to Pauline Mackenzie-Moore on her 100th volunteering role.
Also many thanks to all our volunteers that helped to make it possible, for another great Saturday at Basildon parkrun.

This week, we thought we could be in for a shake up in the top places, as Tey Lynn-Jones was in the lead on lap 2, but Rob Vinicome got his legs working, and stormed home as our first finisher.

First Lady was Sophie Wetheridge, who finished in under 21 minutes.

We saw tourists from Leicester and Manchester, but the most miles has to go to Australia.

In total 162, ran, jogged and walked around a wet and muddy Northlands Park, all made possible by 21 volunteers.

We saw 25 first timers, 15 PBs, from 19 different clubs, so very well done all.

Thanks Dave!

Basildon parkrun Run Report #296

Welcome to Basildon parkrun Run Report 296, this week sent in by Peter Eates!

Phoenix Striders parkrun takeover

Hi, my name is Peter Eates and I find myself in a strange and different role this week. My normal Saturday morning is spent with my fellow Event Director at Thurrock parkrun a few miles up the road. I also chair the Phoenix Striders and it's in this role that I was shadow RD to Ian and spending a morning with you lovely guys and sharing our story and some nibbles.

Phoenix Striders last did a parkrun takeover at Basildon in September 2017 and it feels high time that we did a bit of paying back. Basildon is not only Phoenix's local parkrun, we have some 30 striders run here every week and around ten regular volunteers so for many, it is their parkrun home.

I can't say it felt inviting when I started unloading the car at 07:30 in a 0ºC fog. Of course, I knew it would clear by 09:00 (actually 11:40) and the crowd would turn out for our all important event #296.

With the gazebo set up and all in place as we approached nine o'clock, I thought "where is everybody".

I soon realised that you were very wise and staying in your cars until the last possible minute.

I started the briefing by thanking the lovely Basildon parkrun core team for hosting us this week and also thanked 30+ volunteers that turned out to help us make the event happen.

I also introduced our intrepid team of pacers from 20 to 38 mins although Rob V seemed very reluctant to swap his coat for the flimsy pacer vest.

I also welcomed Sam and her team of C25k striders who were graduating in there first official 5k today (post run celebratory picture below)

Having reminded everyone to come and see us for cake and a chat at the end, we got a great field of 221 participants under way.

The pacers paced, the runners run / walked / jogged as they saw fit and achieved 50 PB's - wow. I was delighted when a number of people approached me afterwards and thanked us for the pacers and described how they had helped with their PB's.

With the tail walkers home, we stood around in the improving sunshine and shared a few nibbles while bathing in the lovely atmosphere of another parkrun well done.

Thank you to everybody that made us welcome this morning and we hope to be back in the spring.

Thank you Peter and the Phoenix Striders!

Basildon parkrun Run Report #295

Welcome to Basildon parkrun Run Report 295, this week sent in by Tony Kenyon!

When I volunteered to be run report writer this week, I initially feared that, with heavy rain and winds forecast, and the rugby final on TV, Basildon parkrun 295 might have just been me and a few hardy volunteers! Fortunately, this was not the case and we had a very respectable 160 runners with 18 PBs and 32 first timers.

Today was my 50th run, and I wanted to write about the positive impact parkrun has had on my running. Back on 25/8/2018, I drove to Northlands Park to attend my first ever parkrun (one of the “reverse” course runs due to a fallen tree!). I had only completed the NHS Couch to 5K programme a few days earlier and prior to June 2018, I had not done any running at all since leaving school which as you can tell from my age category, was quite some time ago!

Rewind a few months, and in early 2018 with my young son running rings around me in the garden playing football, and me out of breath and concerned about my health, I knew something had to change. I spent the first few months of 2018 getting walk fit before attempting Couch to 5K in June (which I would recommend to anyone who wants to start running). My biggest fear was that once C25K was completed, I would have little motivation to carry on running. Step forward parkrun!

Some very good neighbours of ours told me about Basildon parkrun whilst I was in the middle of C25K so I was all signed up, barcode tags purchased and ready to go once I had completed the C25K programme. It was great to see how inclusive it was. All ages, all abilities, everyone welcome, everyone encouraged. Everyone was supported, whether you sprinted the 5K in 15 minutes or walked it with the tail walkers. I ran part of my first run with another first timer that day, and we still chat today. I’ve got to know many other parkrunners online via Strava, Instagram etc. It really is a great community.

Since then I have run at 14 different events as I decided a bit of parkrun tourism might be fun (maybe something to talk about in a future report) but I wanted to come back to Basildon for my 50th to see some friendly faces, cheered on by the wonderful volunteers, who as we all know, without whom parkrun simply could not happen.

So, thank you parkrun. I’ve said it before to many of my friends… it may have been Couch to 5K that got me running, but there is no doubt that especially during those weeks I almost couldn’t be bothered to carry on with it all, it has been parkrun that has kept me running.

Thank you Tony!
