Parking for Basingstoke parkrun

At Basingstoke parkrun we have got very limited parking at the War Memorial Park.  And as you may have heard during last week's parkrun run briefing, we will be visited by a warden this week Saturday who will issue tickets to anyone parking in the numbered bays in the War Memorial Park car park, which are for permit holders only.

As we move into 2020, it is likely that parkrun numbers will rise and numbers of cars trying to park in the park will also increase, meaning parkrunners arriving by car are likely to need to arrive very early to get a space there.  If you must come by car then please share lifts to reduce the number of cars needing to park.

Some parkrunners have ignored the signs that are clearly displayed, and have been parking in the private car park on Crossborough Hill on the opposite side of the road to Costello School, by their sports hall. The car park belongs to the school and they hire out this sports hall and car park at weekends. The users of the sports hall have not been able to use their own car park because of parkrunners parking there. Please do not park in this car park.

If you do park on Crossborough Hill then please do it safely, considerately and in line with the Highway Code. Note that some areas of Crossborough Hill have yellow lines, particularly around Costello School. This road can become very busy at times and access must always be maintained for emergency vehicles.

We are very fortunate in that we have got a large amount of parking in easy reach of our park. The town centre car parks are just a short walk away. Below are some details about the parking options and more information can be found at https://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/content/doclib/2118.pdf

The future of our parkrun depends on good relationships with our neighbours so please do follow this guidance - and above all remember that the driver is in all cases responsible for parking legally and safely, and if parking rules are persistently flouted then the Council may reconsider the permission given to parkrun to use this car park.

Car parking for Basingstoke parkrun

At Basingstoke parkrun we have got very limited parking at the War Memorial Park. Therefore if at all possible please consider walking, jogging, cycling or using public transport to arrive at the park. If you must come by car then please share lifts to reduce the number of cars needing to park.

Parking options for Basingstoke parkrun

As you may have heard during last week's parkrun run briefing, starting this week (Saturday 1st September) onward we will no longer be able to open the gates from Crossborough Hill Car Park to allow parking on the grass. As the school holiday period comes to an end it is likely that parkrun numbers will rise and numbers of cars trying to park in Crossborough Hill Car Park will also increase, meaning parkrunners arriving by car are likely to need to arrive early to get a space there.

Note that some areas of Crossborough Hill Car Park have yellow lines, to allow emergency service vehicles access to all areas including the Totally Tennis building, so please respect these by not parking there. It has been the case in the past that traffic wardens have come on Saturday morning and issued tickets to poorly parked vehicles. The driver is responsible for parking legally and safely, but if the rules are persistently flouted then the Council may reconsider the permission given to parkrun to use this car park.

Other options:

1. Consider using other means to get to War Memorial Park; e.g. walk, cycle, public transport. Many runners use parkrun as part of a longer run while training for a distance event, running to and from home or other locations. This is the preferred and recommended option.

2. Council car parks in the centre of Basingstoke: at present from 8am on Saturday morning, the first hour of parking is free (you need to collect a ticket from the machine to put in the car) so particularly if you are a fast runner consider this seriously. Even if you need a little longer parking, one to two hours of parking is available for £2. See the link here for car park options within a short walk of War Memorial Park.

3. Other car parks: there are car parks at Eastrop Park, Rucstall School and Black Dam Ponds all within a ten-minute walk of War Memorial Park.

4. Street parking: there are other nearby roads e.g. Eastrop Lane, Cliddesden Road, that are often have some space early in the morning. Please do NOT park on Crossborough Hill Road outside the car park - it is not a wide road and we don't wish to upset our neighbours.

The car park at the Orchard is unfortunately no longer available for parkrunners to park in as the barrier is normally down on a Saturday morning.

Thank you for being considerate in the light of this change in parking - where you do need to drive to parkrun, please also try to car share if possible.

Important news for Saturday 5 August – course change and parking notice

For those of you who like a bit of nostalgia (and who remember Basingstoke parkrun before April 2015) make sure you take part this Saturday.

There is a football tournament taking place in War Memorial Park, so we will be using the old course as shown in the map below - with a slight diversion around the grass parking area - the alternative was moving to Crabtree, which we thought wouldn't be too popular...!

The football tournament will be using most of the parking area at the top of Crossborough Hill, so there will only be limited parking available to us. Please can you try to walk, cycle, or use public transport to get to the park where possible.
