Volunteering is Fun!

Hello everybody. Did you see the kids in high vis on Sunday?

I managed to grab them after park run to get a group run report / interview and here is it.

Who are you all and how do you know each other?

Sebastian, Cheyanne,  Sophie, George and Loren and we are all friends

Our grown ups help at parkrun and we have met each other by also helping.

What was good / Bad about todays Run?

  • Everybody was so supportive.
  • It was fit
  • The weather was bad and it was quite chilly
  • I (Loren) loved the sprint finish
  • There were no first timers for the briefing ☹
  • There were a lot of wrist bands to give out
  • There was a nice lot of children (we can have more though)

How have you all helped this morning at Park run?

  • We all helped with the pre-course set up. This includes putting the cones out, putting the signs up, getting the tokens out and just being helpful to get everything ready
  • Giving out the wrist bands
  • First timers briefing (but there wasn’t anybody to talk to)
  • We were speaking to everyone to get the monsters name

Have you all helped before?

  • Yes! Lots of times!

Why do you help?

  • To be helpful
  • Its good fun
  • I like seeing other people and helping then and I enjoy it
  • Because I don’t think the adults can manage it in the time without our help
  • To get my purple volunteer T-Shirt

What is the best volunteer role you have done?

  • Helping with the warm up
  • First timers briefing
  • Cheerleader at the end for the other children coming in (and stealing the megaphone to do this)
  • Naming the Monster (this is a new role and not in other park runs and not an official park run volunteer role)

What would you say to people (runners or grown ups) about volunteering?

  • Get your butts to volunteer!!!
  • Get your parents to volunteer then they don’t slow you down running with you
  • I’m 8, its fun, do it!

What would you say to a person who has never been to park run before

  • It’s fun, everyone is very supporting
  • Keep running and when you do enough you get a wrist band

Tell us about the monster?

  • I (Sebastian) designed it
  • It’s cute
  • It has a pom pom nose
  • It’s fun
  • It’s nice
  • Cheyanne ran with it

Please can you help us find a name for it as we don’t know what it is yet. (have a look on facebook as we have a poll for the name)

Anything else you would like to say?

  • Who will run with the monster next week?

Meet our monster

Please meet our new Bedford Junior friend.

If you joined us today you would have seen "the monster" walking around. We are trying to find a name for it. Now we got some great names today but we need your votes! The list below came from today's runners and volunteers.

This is our top 6. Please can you vote below of your choice or let us know before the run briefing next week and the RD will announce the monsters name.

The choices are.....

  • Parky
  • Bedford Bob
  • Running Ralph
  • Running Rosie
  • Squishy
  • Molly the monster

Congratulations if your name made the list and thanks for all the ideas. Please pop over to our Facebook page to vote.

The Monster went to Costa after the run to help process the results and is now chilling at home! All it needs is a name!

How can you become a Bedford junior report writer?

Well there are many ways you can get involved.

We started doing some junior run reports at the end of 2018 and they are fun :) Its great actually hearing what the children think about junior parkrun and writing them up onto a post on both our facebook page and here normally brings a smile to the face of the person typing it.

Depending on the age of the runner there are various ways you can do a report. Draw a picture, answer some questions on our template, write everything from scratch. Photos with the report are also very happily accepted :)

run report template

Grown ups, you can help by doing the writing, prompting for the questions / answers and if you do it at home after the event emailing it over to us so we can publish it!

Any junior runner doing a report also gets their volunteer credit. Not only that but if the report writer is in a school year doing show and tell, what an amazing thing to take in!

If you would like to do a report any week, maybe you are visiting us, have a birthday, running a special number, got a PB or just had great fun on today's run please let us know.

It doesn't matter if you have done it before or its your first time, long or short all reports are greatly appreciated!

Just email us if you would like further information or to volunteer :)

What a second birthday

This week was an amazing run. Today there were:

58 runners

11 visitors

13 PBs

Welcome to all of our first timers / visitors. We hope you had a good time and look forward to seeing you again!

So out of the 13 PB’s the girls managed to beat the boys 7 / 6 – a great effort by all. So if you got a PB today check out the results on http://www.parkrun.org.uk/bedford-juniors/results/weeklyresults/?runSeqNumber=104 so you know your position and read on.

Position 6

This young man had now had 8 PB’s with 3 in a row before. Next week he will be celebrating 1 year of park runs and today he manged to complete in 09:14 which is 5 minutes and 6 seconds faster than his first run. What an achievement in a year – well done!

Position 10

Now with only 18 parkruns under his belt he has clocked up an amazing 6 PB’s. Last week was his 1 year parkrun anniversary and in the year he has manage to get 4 minutes and 15 seconds quicker. How quick will he be next year - fantastic progress there
