A Birthday Run!!!

My run report
28th April 2019

It was my 9th birthday today and I thought nothing better than to run with my BFFs (best friends forever) and my Bedford Junior Parkrun Family.

I was the one with the big 9 balloon so I’m sorry if it got in your way.

Today was also mine and my brothers 60th Junior parkrun.

The rain stayed away but it was nice and cool for the run today. We really needed the warm up today as it was chilly but that was really nice for running.

We had 68 runners today, with an amazing 5 first timers and 8 PBs.

Because we run so well and worked so hard we went out for an amazing breakfast. We didn’t get a PB but today I ran with two new runners and we ran together as a team, this is the best thing about parkrun, it’s a Run not a Race!

We wondered this morning if it was going to happen as we were short of volunteers, we love volunteering and I am working hard to get my 25 t-shirt. So, if you think you can run without your parent then please get them to join the high-vis team.

By Sophie Aged 9!

Happy Mothers day

Did you run today?

Has anyone got any good photos we can add to our post (and our page on the parkrun website?) If so please send them in to us bedford-juniorshelpers@parkrun.com and we can add them in.

Now as an RD I am not always good at remembering to thank our volunteers (and I should) Without them we really cant put on a park run. There is a lot that goes on both before and after the actual run.

If you would like to come and help please do more people are always welcome (especially as we approach holiday season). Young or old there are jobs for you and after 25 attempts you get a lovely FREE purple T Shirt

Well today, although not Sunny was a lovely day and I got (with my young helpers assistance) to hand out 3 wrist bands today. One Half Marathon and 2 fulls. Well done to Alice, Danny and Matthew. Great work!

The actual run itself today went without any false starts and, we had all finished and packed everything away before 9:25. This has to be one of the fastest runs we have had.

It was lovely to see some old faces in the starters as well, lovely to see you back again Evie.

So today we had

31 Runners
18 Boys, 13 Girls

4 Personal bests (all boys)

2 people who completed a milestone run today (Wrist bands for them next week, both will be getting their half marathon for 11 runs)

Lets have a look at who got PB's today!

Our first one goes to Cooper, he has only been running with us since February and this is his 3rd PB - with 07:54 on the clock he is 26 seconds faster off his first time. I look forward to seeing his time later in the year with this progress. Fantastic start to the year Cooper

Now George is one of our Volunteer runners, he has completed 113 runs over all with 76 of them at Junior Parkrun. A total distance 1,074 KM run this is his 19th PB, his second this year. Well done George - great running

Number 3 today is Hugh, now he also completed his 11th run today so with a PB as well double celebrations. His 5th PB since he started at Bedford Juniors and he is now 48 seconds than when he first joined us. A nice steady pace for him. Well done Hugh

Our final PB goes to Jesse, his 5th Parkrun and already on his 2nd PB! Jesse have you been eating runner beans? Ladies and gentleman this amazing young man hasn't run with us for a while but he must have been running elsewhere as he was an AMAZING 5 minutes and 10 seconds quicker than before with a PB today of 10:36! Absolutely brilliant Jesse!

So please join me in congratulating all of our young athletes today. Whether your got a PB or not hopefully you had fun and that is what it is all about.

Thank you for joining us and see you all next week (if you want to volunteer drop us an email bedford-juniorshelpers@parkrun.com)

Until then...

happy running.

A tribe of mini helpers

Did you join us on Sunday for Park run?

How did your runner get on?

Wasn't it lovely weather to run in?

It looks like our little hic up with the finish tokens was sorted OK as no emails from anyone saying there was an issue so we are really happy about that So what else happened on Sunday? Well we seemed to have a little bit of a mini helper takeover. There was us in the cupboard when suddenly there were lots of smaller people grabbing everything and running to set everything up! In total we had 8 people running an volunteering!

Thanks mini tribe you were fab! I think everyone enjoyed the warm up loads, it was a great team effort and a fantastic start to a run (which only got better)

We did a test start, apparently 2 is the new 3 but then they were off.

60 runners

32 Boys, 28 Girls

Lets look at the first 5 in...

It was a brilliant and fast run for the 5 of them, no PB's but close. Boy, Girl, Girl, Girl then boy. A brilliant run from all 5 of them.

19 Personal Bests

11 Boys 8 Girls

Now there are far to many PB's to mention each one by name however, Sophie (26 seconds off) and Sebastian (19 seconds off) who were both part of the junior helpers both got a PB.

So does volunteering make you run faster?

Now the final PB i'm going to mention belongs to a young gentleman Ethan who finished just before our tail walker.

By this time the Children had the megaphone so he was yelled (sorry encouraged) in. It was his 4th run with us, his first PB and 19 seconds quicker than his first run. Nice steady running from him (and his dad) I wonder if dad is slowing him down? Well done Ethan

4 first timers

Now welcome to all of our first timers, there were 4 ladies who had their bar codes so have a time. It was nice to meet Beth at the end who said she had enjoyed it (and even helped handing round the biscuits). You had a great first run at 13:07, next time do your shoe lace up before you start and you will have a PB Welcome to Beth (her mum) and all the first timers - we hope to see you again at Bedford Juniors.

You can find our official web page at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/bedford-juniors/ and if you look http://www.parkrun.org.uk/bedford-juniors/futureroster/ you will see our up coming rosters.

Its only Tuesday but we are collecting names for this weekend up to the start of April. Can you help us? We can only run the event with the help of our volunteers so, if you would like to join our tribe of yellow, orange and blue jackets please get in touch. just drop us an email bedford-juniorshelpers@parkrun.com with your park run ID, the date you can help and if there is a job you would like to try pop that down as well.

Volunteering is amazing fun, it seems to make the runners get PB's and its a brilliant start to the week so come and experience it for yourself :) See you Sunday to do it all again!!!!

Our Junior cheerleaders are the best!!!

Hello, Bedford junior parkrunners (or should I say park splashers!)

Well it was a wet one today and there is no doubt about that. Firstly we have a run report from someone who doesn’t like running.

“I came to the Jubilee Park - run to support my mum (who has recently got into running) and my brother who placed 1st with a amazing time of 7:21. I don't like running that much so I decided seeing as I was there , to write a report on how everyone was so supportive , kind and caring. Younger children were joining in despite the weather which was rainy. The volunteers guided the runners and were very encouraging to those who needed a boost to keep on going. The eagerness from the starting line was phenomenal and the funny warm up done by the director. Overall I think junior park-run is an excellent place to motivate younger ones who want to get into running. Thanks for reading, Daisy Robertson (age 12)

Daisy, thank you for writing this – this is a brilliant report. Are you sure you are only 12? This sounds like it could have been written by a journalist, it was so good!

So as Daisy said, her brother Lewis got an amazing time, and how amazing was his 7:21? 3 seconds off his personal best at 07:18. Only his 8th run with us but 3 PB’s so far and a full parkrun under his belt (which he finished in 24:37) so a runner to keep an eye on here.

As Daisy said, despite the rain there is a lot to write about again. Today we had….

38 runners (21 boys and 17 girls)

10 personal bests (6 boys and 4 girls)

No first timers or visitors ☹

We got to give out 3 wristbands today – a full marathon and 2 ultra-marathons. All of our wrist band receivers were supported by their grandparents as well. Thanks to them for the extra clapping and sorry it was such a wet day to get it, hehe.

We also had Edward celebrating his 6th birthday and I’m sure on the start line someone told me their birthday was this week (I couldn’t run after them to check as they are much faster than me).

Now I know we mention volunteers a lot but today I just wanted to say a little thank you to all the runner volunteers. The people I am about to mention helped with pre-run course checks, setting up, putting signs out and helping to tidy everything away at the end. Thank you to George, Sophie, Sebastian, Edith, Stephen & Cheyanne – volunteer credits being processed for you all.

Yes, parkrun is about running and that’s great, but with our juniors I think there is another side to how the children all join in. Have a look at the results. Sophie who got her Ultra band today with her brother George (who got a PB today) and Sophie was a brilliant pacer for her friend and for Sebastian who got a PB.

If you are looking to run around the 11:30 mark, look out for Sophie in the future – run with her and I’m sure you will get there. Thanks Sophie.

Have a look at all the results here. http://www.parkrun.org.uk/bedford-juniors/results/weeklyresults/?runSeqNumber=108

As today’s Run Director, I was having great fun with the megaphone shouting at, sorry encouraging the children (until one of the timekeepers, as in Andrew, stole it from me). Anyway, when we were getting to about the 12-minute mark, a lot of the children who had already finished came to join me encouraging the rest of the children in. Well this little posse got bigger, there were shouts, high-5’s and we managed to spot Edith just after Marshall 7 and she was encouraged in by them.

That just left our tail walker Stephen to come in. 8 children I think including Edith all ran across the field to join him on the final half lap. For me this is what junior parkrun is all about – the way all of these children living in different areas and going to different schools all join as one, making new friends and supporting and encouraging everyone in.

So a personal thank you to every single one of those kids who did that. I know as a parent of one of them I am very proud to see it and I think every connected grownup should be proud as well! They are a credit to themselves and junior parkrun!

Thank you Bedford juniors!!!

Wet, Windy and fun!!!

Good afternoon Bedford Juniors (and their adults on Facebook). Did you all have a good run today?

Today we had….

56 runners (32 boys, 22 girls and one person with no barcode)
8 personal bests (3 boys and 5 girls)
7 (yes I said 7) first timers (6 boys and a girl)
And 4 visitors

The children (boy and girl) with the most runs go to….
106 runs to our lady in position 49
74 runs to our young man in position 24

Want to know who they were? Have a look on the results and see if it was you.

We have 2 brilliant run reports for today. What’s also very nice about today’s run reports is that all 3 of these runners also helped to set the course out before the actual run and wrote these reports so they well and truly earnt their volunteer credits today!

Remember, 25 volunteer credits and you get a purple parkrun volunteer t shirt!
Volunteering is fun and you don’t need to be an adult to help. If you or your children are wanting to volunteer in the future, please either drop us a message on Facebook or email to bedford-juniorshelpers@parkrun.com. If you are also running, let us know and we will ensure you get a job that works with it.

Our first report is from Sebastian…

under 18 volunteers

"I have been coming to Bedford Juniors for just over a year. Today I came in position 18th and I was close to my personal best. So today it was cold and windy which wasn’t good weather to run in! The best thing about today’s run was seeing my friends Cheyanne and Steven. If someone has never been to parkrun before I would say ‘hope you have a good run and be careful’.

“I sometimes do adults, I think I have run 5 adults and around 31 juniors so 90 KM.

“I come to park run with Daddy and Claire. I sometimes do adult park runs. Adults is good because I have to pull Claire around the track.

“I volunteer by putting out cones for the finish funnel and doing first timers’ briefing, and I also do a course check where I walk / jog the route and clear away any big sticks and tell the Run Director about the course.

“I don’t run with a grown up and that’s good because Daddy slows me down!”

Sebastian guessed at 90 km. Just slightly over – he has completed 79km which is made up of 32 parkruns since September 2017, 5 adult and 27 junior. He has had 4 PBs and has volunteered 6 times (officially). His junior PB is 11:25 which is a minute quicker than his first junior run, and when he finishes his parkrun he normally runs to join the tail walkers and does another lap with them to encourage any children at the back.

Thanks for a great write up Sebastian!

Our second report is from Sophie and George. Today was their 50th Junior Parkrun and George came in 29th and Sophie 37th.

sophie and george

Sophie: “Today the course was cold, windy and wet with lots of puddles. The best thing about today was that George and I ran without Mum or Dad and I did a great time! I loved the cheering and the support and I enjoyed pacing and encouraging my friend.”

George: “If someone had never been before I’d say its great fun. It’s a great course – I loved it.”
Both: “We are brother and sister and come to parkrun together. Sometimes we run with our cousins.
“Today was a special run for us as we did our 50th junior Parkrun today. We are both member of the Redway Runners running club.

“We also do adult parkruns, mostly Luton Wardown. It’s longer and harder but we eat more cake. Sophie thinks she has run 285 KM and George 255km.

“We have volunteered before and so have our mum and dad. Yesterday we marshalled at Luton Wardown and last week Sophie did the first timers’ briefing.

“Sometimes we run with a grownup. With them is very annoying but they encourage us. Without them means that you can run freely and not sprint at the end.

“Finally we would like to say thank you to all the volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you!”

So let’s check out their information…
George thinks he has run 255km and he is spot on – 31 adult and 50 junior parkruns. So in George’s 81 parkruns he has achieved 19 PBs, 4 on the trot!!! He has run at 20 different parkruns. His junior PB is 12:08 which is over 6 minutes faster than his first run at Bedford Juniors in 2017. George has volunteered 3 times.

Sophie thought she had run 285km – again, spot on at 37 adult and 50 junior parkruns. Sophie has run a few more times than George and has 87 runs behind her and 17PBs. She ran an amazing 48 times last year and has also volunteered 3 times.

Fab report Sophie and George and congratulations on your 50th junior. Can’t wait to give you wrist bands

So that is the end of todays write up. It just leaves me to say a final thank you to Sebastian, Sophie and George for helping today and providing us with such brilliant run reports.

If your runner had a PB today or an achievement, please give them a shout out below. Hope everyone has a fantastic week and see you just before 9 am next Sunday to do it all again!

under 18 volunteers

Well that was a wet run!

 Are you all dry yet?
So today we have 2 brilliant run reports from Jack & Henry so a big thank you to both of them.
So our first report today and his second time writing a report from us is from Jack.
Today it was very wet with a lot of puddles. The best thing about today’s run was getting a PB and winning. I love running in the rain!
If someone was coming to park run for the first time, I would tell them it's very fun.
I think I have run about 250 km in park runs. Sometimes my sister runs with me (today she didn't)
I belong to Bedford & County AC and this means I get to run an extra 2 time a week and have a coach.
I do adult park run as well and go to Bedford parkrun, the difference is I am running against adults there.
I will keep running at this Junior Parkrun until in 14 and I hope to win lots more times.
Thanks for your report Jack - your distance guess was pretty good. According to my parkrun Stats you have done 249 KM - as you said you came first today and got a new PB which makes your 20th PB overall and the last 2 junior parkruns have both been a PB for you so well done :)
Our second Report comes from Henry & his friend Tyler so let’s see what they had to say.
Today was our 13th run and we came in 43rd and 18th places. It was very wet and muddy and squelchy and we got soaked!!! The best thing about today was running in the muddy puddles.
If someone had never been before we would tell them that this is a really good thing and you will get a 6 pack and stay healthy.
We think that we have run 26km (Henry) and 16km(Tyler)
Henry comes with his sister and Tyler comes with his brothers. We didn't get any awards today but Tyler’s brother Kaleb got his half Marathon.
We don't do any adult Park Runs but Henry has done the Santa Run.
Henry's dad marshals and his sister Daisy helps.
We both like running with each other and our friend Kamil, and Tyler likes going faster than adults.
It was lovely to see everyone dressed up for Christmas today.
Thank you so much boys what a brilliant report - great team work writing it up!
So you think you have run 26km and 16km. I'm sorry to say boys but you are wrong. You have both run much further than that 32km and 20km and between the two of you there have been 5 PB's
So talking about PB's let’s have a look at today’s Stats
Today there were;
  • 47 runners
  • 1 visitor
  • 5 PBs
  • 3 Sprint / photo finishes
So firstly, a shout out to the runners in positions 4 & 5, 8 & 9, 21 & 22 who provided us with brilliant endings all of you fantastic race to the end.
For Personal Bests today we have already looked at Jack who was in first place with a new PB knocking another 6 seconds of his time and now here are the rest of our PB recipients.
Our next PB goes to the young man in position 11. This is his 7th PB and he has run 78 km in both Adult and junior parkruns. He is a pretty fast young man and today his 10 minute run is 1 minute 28 seconds quicker than his first run with us. Well done
In position number 12 we have another gentleman getting his 6th PB and he’s only run in 12 parkruns so how impressive is that? 2 minutes and 12 seconds quicker and fab result for the run before Christmas for him. Congratulations
Our final boy with a PB finished in position 37. Shaving 4 seconds from his last PB he has just earnt his 5th PB – well done! Are you going for number 6 next week?
Finally, our only lady this week with a PB who seems to be earning one every other week came in 47th today. This is her 4th parkrun, definitely her wettest park run and her second PB. 1 minute and 55 seconds quicker than her first week, she is doing great. If she carries on like this in a years’ time she will be racing for the first lady across the line

Ho Ho Ho – Merry Christmas

Are you joining us on Sunday?

Our Pre-Christmas run. Christmas outfits and lots of fun are on the menu for our Christmas Run.

Also, if your runner would like to volunteer to write the Junior Run Report please let us know and we can set them up on the roster  (and if any one else want to volunteer although the roster is looking good we never say no to more marshals clapping and encouraging the runners around)
