Event 38 – 8 February 2020 – The Calm Before The Storm

Glorius muddy Bethlem parkrun continued to be gloriously muddy but, thankfully, not wet and highly windy like the following day. In fact, after a slightly overcast start, the day turned into a warm and calm spring-like day. Literally, the calm before the storm.

Amongst the 71 finishers, we welcomed 30 first timers to Bethlem including a number of parkrun ambassadors who were using the event as a warm up to one of their regualr meetings. Hopefully, we passed muster with their exacting standards (cake in the cafe afterwards always helps we find!).

As usual, the conditions provided a stern challenge for all the runners, with various different strategies utilised to navigate the more treacherous parts of the course.

The event was made possible by 20 volunteers:

Terri SHOTTON • Catherine LOCKTON • Luke HOOPER • Mike SIMMS • Janet SIMMS • Jackie GANLEY • Gillian SELMAN • Marcus ELWES • Martin BLACK • Sarah REGAN • Colette SHORT • Isabella SHORT • Kev HOWARTH • Tom CULLIGAN • Ashley MIDDLEWICK • Rebecca GOLDER • Mary YATES • Trudi SENEVIRATNE • Sam LEEDHAM • Francesca MEEHAN

In laying out the cones on the far field earlier that morning, our co-Event Director Janet SIMMS carried out her 300th volunteer role (she shortly afterwards carried out her 301st when carrying out the First Timer's Briefing). Jan has been instrumental in the setting up and running of Bethlem parkrun (as well as the running of Bromley parkrun in a previous life) and we are all very grateful for her efforts week in week out.

Jan is presented with flowers by fellow co-Event Director Marcus
