New Year’s Day 2019

nyd special 2

We're running an extra parkrun on New Year's Day to get 2019 off to the best possible start. It's the only day of the year when you can get credited for running TWO different parkrun events on the same day.

Our friends at Chelmsford Central parkrun, Brentwood parkrun (at South Weald) and, for the first time, Hockley Woods parkrun, are starting their parkruns at 10:30am, so you have a choice of New Year Double.

If you don't feel up to two parkruns, the cafe will be open so you can enjoy a nice warm coffee after your virtuous start to the year!

If you'll be away for New Year this year, a full list of all Christmas and New Year parkrun events around the UK is available here

Please travel safely between events :)

Announcement – Gavin & Stacey parkrun, Billericay parkrun trip to Barry Island parkrun, 3 November 2018

Oh, what's occurring?

Well, it's our biggest adventure yet truth be told... and we’ll tell you for why.

On Saturday 3 November Billericay parkrun is cancelled for the annual Lake Meadows fireworks display.

We (David, Catherine, Rachel, Sam and Michaela) will instead be running at Barry Island parkrun in south Wales to make a Gavin and Stacey parkrun a reality!

And we want you to be there with us!

Naturally we're big fans of the series which beamed our two little towns onto primetime TV and linked them together forever. Gavin is from Billericay, Stacey is from Barry Island - so it seems only right to take the chance to cross the Severn and visit ‘our other half’.

A huge thank you in advance to Lyn, Ian and the whole Barry Island event team for having us!

Q: Are you lot completely out of your minds?
A: Quite possibly!

Q: What are the travel arrangements? Is there a coach?
A: While we would've loved to have been able to organise a coach, parkrun’s (very sensible) guidance about event teams handling money means we probably shouldn't... If a lot of people want to come and someone is able to sort a coach / minibus, maybe we can connect up on this event page.

Q: I’m not lucky enough to have either Billericay parkrun or Barry Island parkrun as my home run but I like the idea and love Gavin and Stacey. Can I still come?
A: Of course!

Q: What are the timings?
A: Barry Island parkrun starts at 9am every Saturday. Arrive for briefings at 8:45.

Q: What is the Barry Island course like?
A: The route takes in many of the most famous sights from the series. You'll go past Nessa's slot machines and the beach where Uncle Bryn did his famous Daniel Craig impression and, most importantly, grab a coffee at Barry Island parkrun’s official café, Marco's. Tidy.

Q: Is it fancy dress?
A: Only if you want it to be!

Q: My dog is a big Gavin and Stacey fan, can he/she run with me?
A: Like many other parkrun events, Barry Island parkrun doesn't permit dogs for safety reasons as the course has some quite narrow sections.

Q: What on earth is Gavin and Stacey?
A: Only the best TV series featuring Barry and Billericay there has ever ever been. Currently available on Prime TV and Netflix.

Q: Will there be any fireworks occurring in Barry?
A: The Barry Island Firework Fiesta is taking place on the evening of 3 November. You can watch from the promenade.

Q: Is there a special commemorative badge on the parkrun Google Chrome extension (here) for people to get when they’ve run Billericay and Barry Island parkruns, the ‘Gavin and Stacey double’?
A: What a brilliant idea! We definitely didn't write this question ourselves as a subtle hint to the developers.

Any other questions or ideas please email us at :) Hope you can make it!
