Volunteering after 17 months away

Driving pack into the car park at Black Park at 8.15am on a Saturday morning is something I haven't done since March 2020. I've been at Black Park lots of times in the last 16 months to run and walk - I've been so many times, I'm on first name terms with the trees! But this was special, I was going to meet up with Parkrun family and volunteer at event #566.

There were already plenty of runners chatting in groups and warming up as I made my way to the shelter to register and pick up my hi-viz . Arriving early gives you time to chat and get to know the other volunteers as well as see what goes on behind the scenes before the run director gives the welcome at 9am.

When I run, I normally start near the back but when I volunteer I'm standing at the front, often to make sure no-one runs into the dreaded post at the first corner, and so I see all the fast runners. It is joyous to see everyone run past. As soon as the last runner crosses the start line, we tidy up and make our way back to the shelter ready for the first runner home which is normally about 17 minutes after the start.

This week I was the volunteer manually writing your number and position - thank you to all those runners who thanked the volunteers! It is a great way to meet lots of people and to experience the event from behind the scenes. There are lots of roles and since we have restarted we need more volunteers on a weekly basis as we need more people to scan so there aren't any big queues and more marshals to show you where to go, again to avoid queues building up.

So if you fancy volunteering, please email blackpark@parkrun.com

Thats enough about the volunteers, on to the runners.

This week, 386 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 45 were first timers and 44 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 33 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 30 volunteers:

Barbara ALLEN • Mark LUCAS • David PRIDDY • Andy TORRANCE • Kate SHEPHARD • David COOMBS • Nick ARCHER • Dominic HOLLERON • Amar BABHANIA • Heather PIPER • Joanna MORIARTY • Chloe BREAGAN • Raymond John HOYLE • Suzy GAULTON • Nigel FARNFIELD • Josephine FARNFIELD • Audrey PARSONS • Marianne HUGHES • Shona LOWE • Nigel WRIGHT • Richard GOBLE • Sam PHILLIPS • Holly PHILLIPS • Yestin LINTON-SMITH • Marie KOUHI • Hannah KRULL • Allan SOMERVILLE • Alison THORPE • Nina KURTIS • George SUMMERVILLE
