Happy birthday parkrun

Run # 575 – 2nd October 2021

Happy birthday parkrun

On Saturday 2 October 2004, 13 runners and five volunteers turned up to Bushy Park in Teddington, London, for a free, timed, 5k run, known then as the Bushy Park Time Trial. Little did they know what they had started. Forward 17 years and there are events in more than 2,200 locations in 23 countries across the world. Our weekly participation in parkrun providing such enjoyment and social pleasure to so many at Black Park parkrun is a direct result of this early endeavour. Amazing!

We had good running conditions today, a bit damp underfoot but nice and ‘fresh’. The rain started just as we finished clearing up…. perfect! I don’t think anyone struggled to stay upright with the heavy fall of horse chestnuts and I didn’t see anyone playing conkers. Do children still play that?

We were slightly down on numbers this week. I expect this was partly due to some participants taking part in Sunday’s London marathon and some who didn’t want to use up the precious liquid gold……car fuel!

We had an amazing age grade performance of 94.26% by Fiona Kennedy of Ealing, Southall and Middlesex AC. We believe this is a record for participants at Black Park, well done Fiona. Also of note was Liz Lee with 80.92%, getting to be a habit for Liz.

We had 6 people who had never run parkrun before and 21 who had never participated at Black Park before. To those just starting their parkrun adventure. We hope you all enjoyed it and will be back for more.

I know I keep mentioning it but with the changes required to restart our beloved parkrun, we are always in need of additional volunteers. They are the backbone of our event and without them we couldn’t continue with them. You can see the event's future volunteer roster via the future roster page.
