Dogs.

From time to time we remind those running with dogs to give their fellow runners space and not consider just the space around themselves. I’m sure the dogs enjoy getting out there and see it as a bit of fun and especially as there is a chasing element in the activity.

This week we had quite a number of complaints, YES complaints from your fellow runners about dogs interfering with the field.

One dog was seen running at the start OFF-lead. Subsequently the same dog was reported by runners midway and seen by the finish marshals at the end. I’m sure you are all thinking to yourselves “how inconsiderate on narrow paths with so many runners. Over 400 this week.

Also witnessed by all on the finish line was a dog crossing the feet of a fast finishing runner. In this case the owner apologised after the incident. However it does not take away the risk when runners and dogs are in a mix.

So please be considerate at all times. Read the following guidelines from parkrun.
http://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/articles/200566293-Can-I-run-with-my-dog

Fallen Tree on the course.

We gave a notice at the start that a tree had fallen over the track just after 3k. By 9am the rangers had been informed and were reportedly out clearing it.

By the time the leading runners were at 3k the job had been done so I shall send a message of thanks to them for their speedy action.

Orienteering results.

Quite a few parkrunners took the challenge of orienteering on Saturday. Looking through the result there were some mixed performances.

If you want to see the results go to this link and find your particular colour course. - http://www.tvoc.org.uk/application/documents/results/Saturday%20Series%202014-2015/Black%20Park/results.htm

The next local orienteering event is in Langley Park on the 14th February. Exactly the same format. If I beat you on Saturday and you want to get your own back meet me there on the 14th Feb. - http://www.bko.org.uk/event/langley-park-14-feb-15

Note that your day car parking pass is also valid at Langley Park and juniors - 20 and under, only pay £2.50 to enter.

Ciara Williams has consistently been in the top three women finishers – 3rd today, and leads the women by 350 points. May I remind Ciara to update her profile as she is registered as unattached yet I know she is now a Hillingdon AC runner.

PARISH NOTICES.

www.27:30.com

All elite athletes now build up a website with their best marathon time as the focus. 2.09 events is Mike Gratton’s marathon winning time in the London some years back. He is now director of the events company with that name. Others have done the same.

You may have seen Joe Nolan pacing at 27.30 on Saturday. That is the pace he intends to keep on the upcoming New York marathon. Good luck Joe and thanks for giving us a pacing check over the past weeks. I’ve suggested a website domain in the light of his ambition.

Km positions on the course.

The course set up and marking each week is done by a team of cyclists who operate on a roster. We try to identify natural features out on the course as the rangers are against us leaving markers in place once we’ve finished.

Over a period of time and the changing nature of the country park through the seasons the defined positions for the km positions becomes a best guess situation. These positions do not affect the overall distance but is a service to our runners to help pacing judgement.

The good news is that a tacit arrangement has been made to place out temporary stakes from which our team can work. Eventually these will be replaced by permanent markers.

Not a Bengal Tiger to be seen.

At the start briefing on Saturday David gave mention to the orienteering taking place in Black Park the following day.

Two of the regular parkrunners, Bryony Trafford-Smith and myself, Fred Ashford, meeting up by chance in Black Park, decided to run the Orange course. It was only 2.6 km on a course with plenty of paths and flat.

We ran together and up to control point number 5 had the quickest time.

Subsequently we lost that advantage but still managed to finish as the 4th fastest.

That is despite -

1. leaping over a raging torrent (well a wet ditch that would have given a wet backside had we slipped in. Bryony tried to pull me in when I offered her my hand).
2. suffering a “headless chicken” moment when we lost the way after checking in at number 8
3. dropping into a 6 foot pit festering with writhing snakes and leeches to check number 9 (actually it was a deep pit created by an uprooted tree and I think I spotted a worm down there).

I feared for our lives at one time when I thought I spotted a Bengal Tiger but it was in fact another orienteer cutting through the high bracken.

Orienteering is a bit like snakes and ladders. If you can avoid the snakes and make use of the ladders (handrails in orienteering jargon) you can be high on the results list. Add some running fitness and you have all the qualities for successful orienteering.

A big thank you to Bryony for keeping me company through this adventure. Another event is planned for a Saturday 10th January. 2.6 km is easy to tackle after parkrun.

PARISH NOTICES.

Local race.
You may know that to give Black Park parkrun some funds to work with in its early days we established a 10k road race back in 2010 with parking and assembly within Black Park. We gave the race the title “South Bucks 10k Road Race”

Though we have reached the target in terms of funds the race itself has become very popular and this year was the 5th running.

It is measured by an approved course measurer and credited with IAAF and SEAA accreditation for course accuracy. The results are archived on the Run Britain website and nationally ranked.

This year’s race was won by South London Harrier Kevin Quinn in a course record time of 31:57 (15:58 for each 5km!). The women’s title went to Ali Young of Chiltern Harriers posting a time of 58:56.

Caution!
Please exercise caution when out on the course at this time of the year. The majestic pine trees shed cones across the paths. These are a hazard for tripping or twisting an ankle.

Today, 11th Oct, we had a fairly serious ankle twist which result in the runner being brought back by car. That is not the way to finish a race and it is a setback to training over the next few weeks.
So exercise caution. Run where it is already trodden down.

Out of Bounds
The forest shelter we use on a Saturday belongs to Go Ape. For normal people the shelter has to be booked and paid for. Go Ape kindly allow us the free use knowing that we shall be out by 10.00-ish.

It is therefore in our interests to keep the surrounding area adjacent to the Junior Go Ape free from bicycles so please chain up your bikes on the opposite side of the track. There is always a volunteer on security duty in the shelter throughout the morning.

Worth knowing.

The course records shown at the end of the report list 3 athletes who are elite in their own category.

Ben Livesey is not new to wearing an England vest. In April he ran in the elite race at this year's London Marathon.

Pippa Woolven
represented England in the recent Commenwealth Games.

Margaret Moody is selected to represent England in the Veterans International Cross Country this weekend.

Upcoming Events.

Sat. 18th October. Burnham Beeches 10k trail. Start 10.30 (after parkrun).

26th October. Slough run for the homeless charity 10k and 5k. Dorney Lake.

It did not go unnoticed that today’s first home was enjoying the park to himself. He was nearly 2 minutes ahead of the second place despite turning round just after 3k to double check he had not missed a sign. This was Daniel CHEESEMAN’S first run with us so if he returns he would be in line for a PB – surely.

The ladies had an impressive leader as well. Helen O'NEILE has only run with us twice and recorded first place on each occasion.

Summary report.

Joe Nolan did pacer at 25 minutes and was spot on. Well done Joe. Next week he plans to go one better but in order to do that needs a pacer himself. Otherwise he’s going for 29 minutes.

Two runners crashed through the magic 80% mark. Margaret MARDALL (VW65-69) and Jackie STALLWOOD (VW70-74).

Olivia JANKE (JW11-14) of Hillingdon AC today showed a clean pair of heals to other women. Her time of 20.09 is very impressive.

I don’t see a change in the leading positions in the points league for both men and women. Both leaders have increased their respective leads at this early stage there is still everything to play for.

The first 2 runners today both recorded PBs so well done to them.

Michael Hill, Rob Lowe and Katrina Harling each recorded their 50th parkrun today. Complete the proforma for size, send it in then wait!

There is a back-log regarding t-shirts which is being addressed at HQ.

PARISH NOTICES.

Since Black Park parkrun started the organising team have put on a 10k road race annually - the South Bucks 10k Road Race. It is held on the first Sunday in October and is now becoming a favourite for club runners as well as parkrunners.

This year’s race will be on Sunday 5th October starting at 9.30. The race HQ is our usual place by Go Ape. Besides winners prizes there is always a prize draw where those who don’t win can win.

    Personal property.

We still have a young ladies/girl’s pink Adidas Clima top in size S 10 – 12. Contact us if it belongs to someone you know.

    LET ME EXPLAIN!

You will notice an unusual clutch of “unknown runners” in the results today.

The finish tokens were being issued in batches of 10 when one batch went missing. That was from #161 to #170.

We know you all remember your own finishing token position so, rather than change your position (and receive numerous emails about wrong positioning), we simply wrote in 10 unknown runners to account for the tokens missing.

This does not change your recorded time or points count.
